The prevalence of gastro-intestinal parasites and bacteria in the game scouts at the Kainji Lake National Park of Nigeria.

The faeces of twenty scouts working at Borgu games were examined for the presence of parasites and bacteria. Cysts of Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Trichomonas hominis were found. Helminth ova encountered included those of Ancylostoma duodenale, Ascaris lumbricoides, Stronglyloides stercoralis and Trichuris trichiura. Escherichia coli and Shigella flexneri were isolated from one faecal sample each. In all, parasites were found in the faeces of only 9 scouts. The epidemiological significance of the infections in highlighted.

A study of the incidence of porcine taeniasis and other intestinal parasites in a rural community of South Western Nigeria.

In the course of an investigation into the incidence of porcine taeniasis among humans and and pigs which live in close contact with each other in a rural town of South-Western Nigeria, no incidence of the parasite was found. Ascaris, Strongyle (hookworm in case of humans) and Trichuris were the helminths encountered while Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba coli were the common protozoan cysts. Polyparasitism was common and a 12 year old boy had Salmonella infection concurrently with Ascaris and hookworm. Analysis of hospital records of the town for ten years (1972-81) showed only 2 cases out of 1665 patients diagnosed as positive for Taenia infection through faecal examination. Abattoir records of incidence of bovine and porcine cysticercosis in various towns of Oyo State also showed very low incidence in these animals. It is concluded that the rural town of Erua and the Oyo state in which it is locates are not endemic for porcine and bovine taeniasis.

Insulin-like growth factors stimulate growth and L-cysteine uptake by the intestinal parasite Giardia lamblia.

Giardia lamblia, a parasitic protozoan responsible for diarrhea and malabsorption in humans, grows axenically only in media that contain serum and a high concentration of L-cysteine. During our attempts to grow Giardia in the absence of serum, we found that: (a) human insulin-like growth factors (especially IGF-II), but not insulin, promote the growth and L-cysteine uptake by G. lamblia trophozoites; (b) the growth stimulation was inhibited by alpha IR3, an anti-type 1 IGF receptor monoclonal antibody, but an anti-type 2 IGF receptor antibody had no effect; and (c) IGFs act on Giardia through a type 1 IGF receptor-like protein, which can bind IGF-II with higher affinity than IGF-I, and most likely possesses intrinsic phosphotyrosine kinase activity.

Application of lactophenol cotton blue for identification and preservation of intestinal parasites in faecal wet mounts.

Wet mounting is the simplest and easiest technique for the examination of faeces. Routinely employed wet mounts in most of the laboratories include saline, iodine and buffered methylene blue. Lactophenol cotton blue [LCB] staining--mounting medium is commonly used for microscopic identification of fungi. LCB and its modifications were tested as staining mounting medium on parasite positive faecal samples [both fresh as well as formalin fixed] to stain and demonstrate morphology and to preserve parasitic elements [trophozoites, cysts, ova and larvae] in wet mounts. Protozoal cysts [Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia], helminthic OVA [Ancylostoma duodenale, Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, Taenia solium and Hymenolepis nana] and larvae [Strongyloides stercoralis] were well-stained and preserved their morphology in nailpolish enamel sealed LCB-faecal mounts. Morphology was better appreciated in LCB-formalin fixed faecal mounts as compared to LCB fresh faecal mounts and was well preserved by the end of twelve weeks.
