Sensitivity and specificity of radioimmunoassay of serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity for the diagnosis of canine exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.

Concentrations of serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity (TLI) measured by radioimmunoassay were low (less than 1.9 micrograms/L) in 25 dogs with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), compared with 100 clinically normal (control) dogs (5.2 to 34.0 micrograms/L; P less than 0.001; sensitivity, 100%). Serum TLI concentrations (5.5 to 35.0 micrograms/L) in a group of 50 dogs with small intestinal disease (SID) were not significantly different from those of control dogs, values being greater than the lower limit of the control range in all cases (specificity, 100%). Results of bentiromide (N-benzoyl-L-tyrosyl-p-aminobenzoic acid [BT-PABA]) tests and fecal proteolytic activity (determined by use of an azocasein substrate) were abnormal in 21 of 22 dogs with EPI (sensitivity, 95%). Bentiromide test results were subnormal in 13 of 35 dogs with SID (specificity, 63%), whereas fecal proteolytic activity was subnormal in 7 of 34 dogs with SID (specificity, 79%). It was concluded that assay of serum TLI is a highly sensitive and specific test for the identification of dogs with EPI.

[Therapeutic possibilities in diseases caused by intestinal parasites].

Compatible and efficient drugs for the therapy, caused by protozoal- or helminthic-infections, are available today. Many of them are not registered in Austria. Metronidazole, Mebendazole and Praziquantel are particularly effective. Most protozoal-infections can be treated with metronidazole. Mebendazole can be used against numerous nematode-infections (Ascariasis, Trichuriasis, Oxyuriasis, Ancylostomiasis), Niclosamide against cestode-infections (Taeniasis, Hymenolepiasis, Diphyllobothriasis), whereas, Praziquantel is applied against trematode-infections.

[Microbial ecology of the colon].

It has been known for a long time that the human gastrointestinal tract contains 10(14) micro-organisms, which are predominantly anaerobic. Recent research has provided a better understanding of the functions and the equilibrium of the intestinal ecosystem in which the intestinal mucosa and the microbial flora which it supports interact. Any modification in one or other of the constituents of this ecosystem is likely to disturb the normal ecological equilibrium, resulting in a variety of gastro-intestinal diseases. Today, the intestinal ecosystem can be considered to be a system of defence and equilibrium or, conversely, as a reservoir of infection, which is confirmed by the study of certain faecal bacterial profiles with a high risk of infection. In gastrointestinal surgery and paediatrics, the correlation between antibiotic therapy, intestinal microbial proliferation and the development of septicaemia confers a fundamental role of the defence barriers of the gastrointestinal tract in the control or potentially pathogenic endogenous micro-organisms.

Anatomical and pathological aspects in ultrasonic endoscopy for GI tract.

In this paper we tried a fundamental study to analyse the normal structure of gastro-intestinal wall by endoscopic ultrasonography, because conventional examinations of gastrointestinal tract, radiography and endoscopy, can not demonstrate the intra-mural change beneath the mucosa. We have examined 71 cases by the 3 kinds of prototype echo-endoscope I-III manufactured by Olympus Co Ltd, Japan. Moreover, using a most newly echo-endoscope type III, twenty-four patients were examined to observe the changes of normal structure of wall by gastro-intestinal disease. In this fundamental study about the normal structure of gastro-intestinal wall by endoscopic echography, the submucosal layer is demonstrated as a most high echo level zone and the mucosal layer and serosal layer followed in echogenicity. On the other hand, the proper muscle layer had not any echogenicity because ultrasound passes through these layers. As a result we concluded that all layers of gastrointestinal tract can be demonstrated by endoscopic ultrasonography. Moreover, in diagnosis of gastro-intestinal disease, endoscopic ultrasonography is useful in disease of which the normal structure of wall changes directly, for example submucosal tumor, scirrhus type gastric cancer and massive infiltrated malignant disease.

[Interrelation of the enterotoxigenic properties and the antigenic structure of Escherichia].

The enzymatic signs and serological characteristics of Escherichia enterotoxigenic strains isolated from patients with acute intestinal diseases and from healthy persons were studied. The cultures were subdivided into 24 enzymatic variants and classified with 48 serogroups and 61 serovars. The enterotoxigenic properties of the strains were compared with their serological characteristics and enzymatic signs. The strains, isolated from different persons and classified with the same serovar, belonged to the same variant with respect to the type of enterotoxin they produced (only thermostable enterotoxin, only thermolabile enterotoxin, or both), were similar in the degree of their toxigenicity and belonged, as a rule, to the same enzymatic variant. The data on the presence of manifest interrelation between the enteropathogenicity of Escherichia and their structure, as well as on the stability of the enterotoxigenic properties of these organisms, indicate that in acute intestinal diseases the determination of Escherichia enterotoxigenic strains can be carried out by common bacteriological techniques with the use of specific agglutinating sera.
