[Poisoning with elementary mercury: attempted suicide by inhalation of vapors from the heated metal].

This paper reports on a case of attempted suicide by the rare means of prolonged inhalation of fumes from heated mercury. The patient developed symptoms of acute intoxication over a period of 4 to 24 hours after the suicide attempt. This phase consisted of pulmonary, intestinal, psychopathological and neurological signs, persisting at varying intensities for approximately 3 weeks; it was succeeded by a chronic phase with peripheral nerve changes, initially of the axonal type, but later also showing signs of demyelinisation. Furthermore, a pronounced organic brain syndrome developed. The psychopathological, somatic and detoxification results are presented, whereby the symptomatology worsened even after substantial mercury excretion. A follow-up 4 months after the acute episode confirmed the chronicity of the central and peripheral nervous impairment. Therapeutic measures (BAL and aminopenicillin) are discussed; the use of these even 13 weeks after exposure caused massive mercury excretion.

[Experimental study of the antihypertensive activity of unithiol, D-penicillamine and cysteine].

The thiol compounds, unithiol, D-penicillamine and cysteine administered per os, produce an antihypertensive effect in spontaneously hypertensive rats and in animals with experimental renovascular and DOCA-induced hypertension. The drugs reduce the pressor effect of angiotensin I and potentiate and prolong the depressor action of bradykinin in anesthetized normotensive rats. As for the activity unithiol and D-penicillamine are found to be superior to cysteine. This is in a good agreement with the drug inhibitory action in respect to dipeptidyl carboxypeptidase, an enzyme that plays the key role in the control of the activity of the renin-angiotensin and kallikrein-kinin systems of the body.

[Acute poisoning by inhalation of metallic vapors].

Seven cases of acute intoxications by inhalation of metallic vapors are reported. The metals involved were zinc in three cases, tin in one case and mercury in three cases. The severity of the respiratory symptoms was dependent from the inhalated metal. The inhalation of zinc or tin vapors produced an acute limited pneumonitis. A lesional pulmonary oedema and acute interstitial fibrosis with lethal outcome was observed in two cases of intoxication by mercury vapors. The treatment by dimercaptopropanol used in mercury intoxications, increased urinary mercury excretion, but did not improve the pulmonary symptoms.

Effect of canavanine and 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol (British antilewisite) on the proliferation of Novikoff hepatoma cells in the presence of concanavalin A.

The effect of canavanine and 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol (British antilewisite, BAL) on the uptake of (3H)-thymidine by Novikoff hepatoma cells, as a measure of DNA formation, was measured in tissue culture in the absence and presence of the mitogen, concanavalin A (Con A). Canavanine and Con A stimulated cell proliferation at low concentrations, and inhibited at higher concentrations. BAL inhibited even at low concentrations. In the presence of a stimulating concentration of Con A, both canavanine and BAL inhibitory effects were amplified. In the presence of a high concentration of Con A and low concentration of BAL the combined effect was substantially greater than the sum of the individual effects. We describe the culture and harvest of Novikoff hepatoma cells, and changes in their morphology when acted upon by the toxic agents used.
