Hematocrit (HCT) and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration were measured in four chromosomal species and some peripherally semi-isolated and isolated populations of the mole rat superspecies Spalax ehrenbergi in Israel. HCT was 52.0, 51.4, 50.9, and 47.8%, and Hb was 16.0, 16.6, 16.3, and 14.7 g/100 ml for 2n = 52, 58, 54, and 60, respectively. The species 2n = 60, which lives in arid habitats, had lower HCT and Hb than the other three species. HCT decreased as aridity increased between the species and within the species 2n = 60. Changes in HCT probably reflect clinal changes in both soil permeability to gases and ambient temperature.

Selenium- (SE) organo compounds of pooled human milk (7th-14th d after delivery) were separated by centrifugation and subsequent size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) as described in ref. (1). The SEC fractions were used for Se determinations by electrothermal vaporization inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ETV-ICP-MS) in parallel to identification procedures of the organic ligands by two different capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) methods. Further, the combination of isotachophoresis- (ITP) CZE with ETV-ICP-MS was used for final identifications. Mass balances were carried out at each analytical step for quality assurance. Reinjection experiments were performed to check the stability of Se-organo compounds during the analytical procedure. These quality-control experiments showed that no species transformations took place during the analytical procedure, and the Se species were native in human milk. The identification and quantification of organic ligands were clear and resulted in values of 2 (+/- 0.2) mg/L GSH/GSeH, 2 (+/- 0.22) mg/L cystamine/Se-cystamine, 4 (+/- 0.4) mg/L cystine/ Se-cystine, and 1 (+/- 0.18) mg/L methionine/Se-methionine. Unfortunately, a differentiation between sulfur (S) and Se analogs was not possible with the applied CE methods. The Se values per organic ligand were determined as 2.5 (+/- 0.23) mg/L associated with GSH (as GSeH), 3.1 (+/- 0.31) mg/L associated with cystamine (as Se-cystamine), 5.2 (+/- 0.4) mg/L associated with cystine (as Se-cystine), and 1 (+/- 0.1) mg/L associated with methionine (as Se-methionine).
Elemental composition of rain water was determined with the use of instrumental neutron activation analysis. Solid water-insoluble fractions were separated by filtration through membrane filters. Filtrates were dried, and dry residues as well as solid-phase on filters were analyzed. Concentrations of 20 elements in the samples were determined. Enrichment factors and ratios between element concentrations in liquid and solid fractions were calculated. Data obtained allowed us to suppose that Na, Cl, K, Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Se, Br, I, Cs, La, Sm, and Au prevalently exist in the air in the form of relatively coarse aerosol particles; Zn, As, Sb, and Hg prevalently occur in the vapor-gas phase; and Co and W, in the form of finely dispersed aerosol.
An analytical procedure involving a three-step sequential extraction was used to determine the chemical association of heavy metals (Zn, Cr, Mn and Fe) with the major phases (exchangable, reducible and oxidizable) in samples from a fishpond of estuarine sediments. The pond is located in the Capibaribe River estuary, within the boundaries of the city of Recife, in the State of Pernambuco in the northeast of Brazil. The total metal content was determined as well. All metals were extracted from the residual fraction at a percentage greater than 50%.
