Refractory studies in early detection of carpal tunnel syndrome.

We studied refractory periods of the median sensory nerves in 10 patients with mild carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and compared them with the median sensory refractory studies on normal subjects. Our data showed that relative refractory period (RRP) studies are useful in diagnosing early CTS.

[Surgical correction of astigmatism using kerato-resection methods].

The authors analyze the results of surgical correction of hypermetropic and mixed astigmatism, carried out by two methods: clinoid resection of the cornea and clinoid resection of the cornea with tangent autoclinoplasty (i. e. implantation of the resected site to the tangent incision in strongly refracting meridian). Surgical technique has been mastered in experiments with isolated eyes and the mechanism of changes in corneal refraction, resultant from its resection, studied. Experiments with rabbit eyes have shown that after corneal resection cicatrization is over by the third month after surgery. 17 operations with classical clinoid resection and 17 ones with that and tangent clinoid autoclinoplasty were carried out in patients with corneal astigmatism of 2.0 to 6.25 diopters, the follow-up periods being from 6 months to 4 years. The mean reduction of astigmatism after the use of the aforesaid methods has made up 2.47 and 4.8 diopters respectively (according to the data of subjective examination of refraction).

Detection of serum proteins by high-pressure gel-permeation chromatography with low-angle laser light scattering, compared with analytical ultracentrifugation.

Human sera were subjected to analytical ultracentrifugation and "high-pressure" gel-permeation chromatography on a system of combined TSK Gel G5000 PW and G3000 SW columns. The chromatographic method produced remarkably superior resolution of the proteins, especially those exceeding 100 000 Da. We calculated the molecular masses of eluted fractions on the basis of their detection by low-angle laser light scattering and their differential refractive index. We discuss the results in relation to the clinical data.

[The usefulness of the refractometer in the assessment of colostrum and various factors affecting serum gamma globulin levels in newborn calves].

The effects of a number of factors on the concentration of gamma globulins in the serum of newborn calves were studied in 181 calves from six different dairy farms as was also the use of the refractometer test in controlling the ingestion of colostrum. The refractometer test was found to be reliable in controlling the concentration of gamma globulins in the serum of calves up to the sixth day of life. The factors 'time the first colostrum was ingested', 'amount of first colostrum ingested' and the 'concentration of gamma globulins in the colostrum' were found to account for 23.5 per cent of the variations in serum gamma globulin concentration; this became 42.4 per cent when the 'system of administration' and the 'farm-bound factors' were also taken into account. The first colostrum is best ingested when it is offered in a pail or bottle provided with a nipple. Calves of heifers were found to show a lower concentration of gamma globulins in the serum than did calves of older cows.

Optical polarizabilities and related properties of a few biomolecules by new dispersion relation.

As an extension of our studies on simple and macromolecules, the optical polarizabilities of some biomolecules (Glycine, L-alanine and folic acid) have been studied using new dispersion relation. Diamagnetic susceptibilities and electron ionization cross sections for these biomolecules have also been evaluated. The relative merits, feasibility and the limitations of the dispersion relation in relation to other reported methods are discussed critically. The use of the studies in this direction are also cited briefly.

[Calculation of the implant: is it a useless luxury?].

Analysis of the means by which accuracy of intraocular lens power calculation could be improved with theoretical and linear regression formulas. The postoperative refractive errors with the lenses selected by the surgeon were compared with those observed with the emmetropic calculated power lenses and with a standard 20 diopters lens. A consecutive series of 100 eyes with less than 4.50 diopters of pre-operative myopia or hypermyopia, is evaluated. Postoperative refractive errors are out of the range -4; +4 diopters in 6% for standard lens, 4% for actually implanted lens, and 1% for emmetropic power calculated lens.

[Exercise-induced asthma].

Exercise-induced asthma only differs from common asthma in its causative factor. It is a typical asthmatic attack which follows a strenuous and continuous physical exercise lasting 5 to 10 minutes, most often in cold and dry weather. The prevalence of exercise-induced asthma has not yet been firmly established; its pathophysiological mechanisms are still debated, and the respective roles of heat and water losses by the airways are not clearly defined. However, the influence of the type of exercise as a precipitating factor of exercise-induced asthma is now well-known. All things being equal, swimming generates less asthma than running and cycling. This enables the subjects to be directed towards the most suitable sports and encouraged to improve their physical fitness. Drug treatment of exercise-induced asthma must preferentially be preventive; it relies on cromoglycate and beta-2 adrenergic agonists, the latter being also capable of treating acute exercise-induced bronchial obstruction. Education of the patients and their family is also important.

Use of refractive index measurement for quality assurance of pediatric parenteral nutrient solutions.

Use of refractive index measurements to assure accurate formulation of pediatric parenteral nutrient base solutions is described. The refractive indexes for various amino acid and dextrose concentrations were determined. An equation was derived to define the theoretical refractive index for combinations of amino acids and dextrose. Finally, a clinically acceptable range (deviation from theoretical) was determined. The actual refractive index for 300 pediatric parenteral nutrient solutions was compared with the calculated theoretical reading. The actual refractive index for all solutions was consistently predicted by the derived equation. Discussions with clinicians resulted in identification of an allowable range for these readings. All reading were within the identified range. The use of refractive index measurements is a valuable quality assurance tool for pediatric parenteral nutrient base formulations.
