Isolation of Toxoplasma gondii from goats with history of reproductive disorders and the prevalence of Toxoplasma and chlamydial antibodies.

The prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii and Chlamydia psittaci was assessed in goats with a history of abortion, stillbirth and neonatal mortality. Antibodies were detected in 540 (30%) and 57 (3.2%) goats out of 1799 tested by indirect haemagglutination and complement fixation tests, respectively. Toxoplasma gondii was isolated for the first time in Botswana from 22 out of 81 sets (27.2%) of foetal tissues, maternal and foetal cotyledons and uterine tissues of goats which had previously aborted or given birth to stillborn or weak kids that died within two days of birth. These results implicate T. gondii and C. psittaci, but especially the former, to be associated with caprine reproductive problems and require appropriate control measures.

[Results of identifying ornithosis strains isolated in Tajikistan (author's transl)].

Studies were carried out aimed at isolation of the causative agent of ornithosis from the organs of pigeons and budgerigars. The present study was based on the results of a serological survey which had revealed a high rate of infection with ornithosis in pigeons as well as a case of ornithosis in an owner of budgerigars. The isolates were identified, their pathogenicity for some animal species was determined; morphological studies were carried out in cell culture; antigens and immune sera were prepared. The results of identification permited allocation of the isolated strains to the agent of ornithosis and confirmed the role of pigeons and parrots in spread of this infection in Tajikistan.

[Ornithosis--an overlooked cause of atypical pneumonia].

A case illustrating the potential severity of infection with Chlamydia psittaci (ornithosis) is reported. The importance of considering Chlamydia psittaci as an option in patients with severe respiratory failure is emphasized with a view to early PCR diagnosis of ornithosis.

Detection of IgM antibodies to Chlamydia trachomatis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Chlamydia psittaci from Japanese infants and children with pneumonia.

Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) is now well established as a pathogen of neonatal inclusion conjunctivitis and infantile pneumonia. C. pneumoniae (TWAR) and C. psittaci also cause pneumonia and other respiratory infections. Serum samples from 223 Japanese infants and children with pneumonia were tested for IgM antibodies to C. trachomatis, C. pneumoniae and C. psittaci. IgM antibodies to C. trachomatis were measured by an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and by a microimmunofluorescence (MIF) test. IgM antibodies to C. pneumoniae and C. psittaci were determined by MIF. Of 223 patients, 48 (21.5%) were positive for IgM antibodies to C. trachomatis, 11 (4.9%) were positive for C. pneumoniae and 5 (2.2%) were positive for C. psittaci. From nasopharyngeal swabs collected from 87 infants with pneumonia (0 to 1 year of age), we attempted to isolate C. trachomatis with tissue culture. C. trachomatis was isolated from 23 (26.4%) of 87 infants with pneumonia, and IgM antibodies to C. trachomatis were detected in 17 (19.5%) of them. Our data suggest a role for chlamydial infection in childhood pneumonia beyond infancy with both C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae being contributing pathogens.

[Natural foci of ornithosis in Kazakhstan].

An investigation (clinical, immunological and epidemiological) of the workers of various fowl-farms was carried out in various regions of Kazakhstan for a number for years; the sera of domestic fowl and birds was studied as well. On the basis of examination of 6264 persons the greatest percentage of ornithosis was revealed among the workers of the slaughter house and the shop for the processing of the fowl. Examination of 4749 sera of bird blood showed that the highest incidence of ornithosis was among doves and ducks (43.2 and 11.6%), and the least--in chickens (5.3%); there proved to be a direct relationship between the infection of man and birds. Thus, it was shown that domestic fowl and also doves served as the source of ornithosis infection; foci of ornithosis were revealed in a number of Kazakhstan regions as a result of these investigations.
