Nursing assessment in industry.

In order to be able to offer nursing service to industry, a community health agency must have some knowledge of the industry and the daily problesm faced by both management and worker. The nursing process can serve as a framework for the gathering of necessary information and planning of sound care. The five-step nursing process, which includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation, is discussed and annotated model Assessment Guide for Nursing in Industry is given (Appendix A). The six areas from which information should be gathered when assessing an industry are the following: I. The community in which the industry is located: II. The industry, its historical development, policies, and projections; III. The plant or physical structure; IV. The working population; V. The industrial process of the plant; VII. The existing health program. Once the assessment is completed and a diagnosis formulated, services can be offered based on specific, defined needs.

Bridging the gap between finance and clinical operations with activity-based cost management.

Activity-based cost management (ABCM) is an exciting management tool that links financial information with operations. By determining the costs of specific activities and processes, nurse managers accurately determine true costs of services more accurately than traditional cost accounting methods, and then can target processes for improvement and monitor them for change and improvement. The authors describe the ABCM process applied to nursing management situations.

Development of e-Learning for problem solving approach of nursing students.

The problem-solving approach to nursing is labeled the "nursing process". It is common to use cases of simulated patients described on paper as teaching materials in order to learn nursing processes. In the present study, we developed a prototype e-learning system for improving the problem solving abilities of nursing students. The teaching materials included the following 8 nursing education categories: basic nursing; adult nursing (chronic and acute); pediatric nursing; mental health and psychiatric nursing; community health nursing (maternal and child, and geriatric); and occupational health nursing.

Validating nursing theory for use within a computerized nursing information system.

Computerized nursing information systems (CNISs) exemplify the application of computer science to nursing knowledge. For nursing knowledge to be a basis for CNIS development, variable relationships must be clearly defined, thus allowing transformation of data into knowledge. Nursing theories define variable relationships; these definitions, however, often are not specific enough on which to base data-based nursing information systems. This article describes how a nursing process model was derived from Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, the process model validated, and data relationships established within the model prior to its use as a structure for a CNIS.

Making anthropology clinically relevant to nursing care.

Transcultural nursing is generally seen as the interface between anthropology and nursing. A prime objective of transcultural nursing has been the translation of concepts from anthropology and nursing into the nursing process to guide a culturally informed clinical practice. To date, there has been a general inability of transcultural nursing to operationalize the concept of culture to develop culturally competent clinicians; that is, nurses who are capable of knowing, utilizing, and appreciating the effects of culture in the resolution of an individual, group, community, and/or family problem. A model of transcultural nursing is described, for incorporating the concept of culture into patient care. It includes the concepts of cultural brokerage, simultaneous dual ethnocentrism, multiple clinical realities, the patient as cultural informant, and cultural assessment of patient views of clinical reality. The problems of making anthropology and transcultural nursing clinically relevant through the transcultural nursing model are presented and methods are recommended for addressing such problems.

Review and replications of a 'core-course' in behaviour therapy for psychiatric nurses.

The advent of the nursing process and the success of behaviour therapy in psychiatry have created a need for a revised emphasis on nursing practice and education. This paper outlines an in-service, 'core-course' in behaviour therapy which addresses this need. The results from an initial and very comprehensive evaluation of the course are presented in terms of the attitudes, knowledge and skills of 65 nurses. We then give a summary of seven subsequent replications of the course in different British National Health Service psychiatric hospitals. These involved nurses in the organization and running of the core-course, and, together with the very favourable results, they illustrate one strategy for developing nurses' proficiency in behaviour therapy.

The structure of nursing diagnosis from Orem's theory.

Nursing diagnosis is generally accepted as a legitimate part of the nursing process; however, there is no consensus on the form, structure, or meaning of diagnosis within the discipline. Some nursing theories and models provide the basis for deriving a structural model for nursing diagnoses. A general structural model for a classification schema for the perspective of Orem's general theory, the self-care deficit theory of nursing has been developed and described. Sample diagnostic statements for various levels within the schema are presented. The language of nursing diagnosis which is appropriate to the theoretical perspective is also described and examples are provided. Diagnostic statement models are identified. This work is the beginning of a formal classification system for nursing diagnosis from one nursing theoretical perspective.

A nursing data base for initial patient assessment.

The introduction of nursing diagnoses at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center, Laguna Hills, CA, resulted in the nursing process becoming the basis for the documentation system. However, the medical model or body system remained the organizational structure for nursing data collection and narrative charting. The need for a model that would aid in identification and treatment of illness and not negatively affect the nursing process was the impetus behind the selection of Gordon's functional health patterns as the assessment format. These patterns provide a standard method for data collection and a holistic approach to assessment and diagnosis.
