[Hygienic evaluation of proposed materials for an oxygen-converter plant].

The proposed article presents results of a hygienic assessment of a converter shop project at a metallurgic plant. Labour conditions in similar metallurgic plants in the country were studied at the preliminary sanitary control stage. 81 per cent of the sanitary authorities' reclamations were met, including dust discharge control measures, out-flowing gases purification, decrease of fluorine compounds discharge measures, etc.

[The effect of verapamil on external respiratory function in bronchial asthma patients during high-altitude speleotherapy].

To study the effect of speleotherapy on external respiration (ER) in asthma, ER was investigated in 2 randomized groups of 20 asthma subjects each. Speleotherapy was conducted in 24-day courses in salt caves of Chon-Tuz (2100 m above the sea level). The overall exposure lasted 160 hrs. One of the groups was assigned to additional verapamil hydrochloride aerosol therapy (10 mg/day, days 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22). Speleotherapy was found to initiate positive shifts in the external respiration function whereas verapamil hydrochloride to potentiate the observed beneficial rearrangement in asthma patients.

[The spread of the backspray under different working conditions].

The use of high- and highest-speed preparation instruments and the therefore required intensive spray cooling results not only in more efficient working possibilities but also in an increased infection hazard, especially for the dentist and his assistance caused by the spray rebound. Simulated preparations were carried out on different tooth surfaces at different positions of the patient with or without exhaust under clinical conditions to objectify the space spreading of the spray rebound. The arrangement of the equipment has been objectified by photogrammetry so that the measurement data could be clearly classified. The use of the spraying mist exhaust reduces the spray rebound between 50 and 65%.

Effects of microclimatic variables on the availability and movement of third-stage larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi on herbage.

Assessments were made of the influence of several microclimatic variables on the availability of third-stage larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi, on pasture herbage. Variables most closely related to recovery of larvae from the lower herbage samples were: maximum air, mat and dung temperatures. Recovery of larvae from the upper portion of the herbage was closely correlated with dung temperature, sampling-time air temperature and maximum air temperature. Bearing in mind that the moisture threshold was maintained throughout the trial the results of this study suggest that under field conditions, larval movement of third-stage O. ostertagi larvae on herbage is regulated primarily by temperature.

[Indoor climate and occupational health--experiences from Hedmark and Oppland].

We discuss investigations of 22 buildings where users had complained about indoor air and climate. Complaints about "dry air" were the most frequent. Insufficient care and cleaning of the furnishings and technical installations were demonstrated in 17 buildings. Proper documentation and instruction manuals for the maintenance of the installations were not found in any of the buildings. The personnel responsible for the installations had not received adequate instructions. Free man - made mineral fibres (MMMF) were found in the indoor environments in 12-15 of the buildings, originating from the furnishings or the technical climate-installations. Ten of the premises had filted carpets. In at least 13 of the buildings the indoor air temperature was too high, which exacerbated the problems. Better information and a higher level of understanding of problems relating to the indoor climate seems to be needed for all persons involved with these problems.

The climatisation of anesthetic gases under conditions of high flow to low flow.

The aim of climatisation of anesthetic gases in prolonged anesthesia is to maintain tracheobronchial climate comparable to that of spontaneous nasal breathing. The humidity and temperature of inspired gases attained in the circle system at a fresh gas flow of 6.0, 3.0 and 1.5 l/min are inadequate for prolonged anesthesia. According to the results of our study with the scanning electron microscope, the minimal flow technique (0.5 l/min) leads to major improvement of heat (28 to 32 degrees C) and moisture (20 to 27 mg H2O/l) conditions of anesthetic gases in anesthesia systems.

[The physiological hygiene characteristics of the working conditions on modern sowing machinery].

It was found that in sowing machine operators their work was class II hard (permissible conditions) and class III strenuous (grade I hazard). By air dust contamination their work corresponded to grade III hazard, by noise--to grade I hazard. The operators showed signs of functional overstrain of the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, the severity of which depended on the type of sowing machine and tractor.
