Marketing to physicians is still the key to a hospital's well being. This is anything but an exact science, but it does have its roots in data collection and research. The best way to market to physicians is to meet their expectations of the hospital and seek the cooperation of the physicians in getting the word out on new programs and services to their patients. The more the hospital can promote the physician out front with his or her patients, the more likely it is that those physicians will support the promotional efforts of the hospital.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of gastroprotective medication use among users and nonusers of prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) who have arthritis. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We used the Protocare Sciences proprietary Managed Care Organization database, which contains data on more than 3 million lives, to identify 57,136 patients given an initial diagnosis of osteoarthritis (OA; International Classification of Disease, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification [ICD-9-CM] codes: 715, 721.0, 721.3, or 721.9) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA; ICD-9-CM codes: 714.0, 714.1, 714.2, or 714.9); the diagnoses were made during inpatient or outpatient medical encounters occurring between October 1, 1993, and September 30, 1997. The duration of therapy was calculated as the sum of the total number of days of receipt of all prescriptions during the year. The prescribed daily dose was determined by multiplying the drug dose by the number of pills dispensed and the dividing the product by the number of days supplied, as noted in the pharmacy records. RESULTS: During the year after NSAID initiation, 27% of people with RA and 12% of those with OA were chronic NSAID users. NSAID users with RA were 4 times as likely as NSAID nonusers with RA to begin using a gastroprotective agent within the first year; NSAID users with OA were twice as likely as nonusers with OA to do so. CONCLUSION: The use of gastroprotective agents during the first year after NSAID initiation for the treatment of arthritis was greater than their use by those who did not take NSAIDs.
Research in the life sciences is increasingly dominated by high-throughput data collection methods that benefit from a global approach to data analysis. Recent innovations that facilitate such comprehensive analyses are highlighted. Several developments enable the study of the relationships between newly derived experimental information, such as biological activity in chemical screens or gene expression studies, and prior information, such as physical descriptors for small molecules or functional annotation for genes. The way in which global analyses can be applied to both chemical screens and transcription profiling experiments using a set of common machine learning tools is discussed.

"The purpose of this article is to show that if many characteristics affect the mortality of individuals, there are intrinsic limits to the ability of demographers to answer two elementary questions:" whether the force of mortality in the last year was more or less severe in one country relative to that in a second, and whether an individual's chance of survival would have been greater in one or the other of the two countries. The author notes that the conclusions are applicable to all demographic crude rates. "The possibility of encountering Simpson's paradox suggests that since sex is only one of many possible stratifying variables that appear to affect mortality, the use of mortality tables distinguished by sex and by no other variables is, in the absence of information about the importance of other variables, demographically arbitrary."

Using the multidimensional model developed by Andrei Rogers, the authors formulate a method for analyzing the interaction between and the multiplicity of certain behavior patterns such as migration. "The present article attempts to present a conceptual approach which extends classical demographic analysis to multiple phenomena or which adapts the analysis of mobility to demographic methods." (summary in ENG, SPA)
"Thanks to the Internet, researchers now have instant and easy access to reference sources and databases and in many cases, no longer have to pay search fees. Highlighted here are some of the most useful reference sources for population research on the Internet."
Blood donation is indispensable for quality health service provision. The stagnation of the number of donations in Catalonia prompted up an external evaluation of the system of blood collection that could orient the future policies. An evaluation of blood-donor services in Catalonia was designed adopting a qualitative methodology. The evaluation design included the use of a variety of techniques namely participant observation, individual interviews, group interviews and documentary techniques. The field work was carried out in all blood-donation sectors of Catalonia from the 23th November to the 4th December, 1998. Using Atlas/ti, a computer science tool for the qualitative analysis of textual data, the information analysis partially followed the prescriptions of "grounded theory" and of some modalities of thematic content analysis. The results show the basic characteristics and deficiencies of the process and its organization, describing their strong and weak points. The findings also detail arguments on blood donation that the agents implied in the process, donors an professionals, use. We also report what reasons the blood-donor service managers/providers gave for donating blood, and what perceptions they had of blood donors.
