Reduced proportion of Purkinje cells expressing paternally derived mutant Mecp2308 allele in female mouse cerebellum is not due to a skewed primary pattern of X-chromosome inactivation.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is an X-linked disorder caused by mutations in the methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene. The pattern of X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) is thought to play a role in phenotypic severity. In the present study, patterns of XCI were assessed by lacZ staining of embryos and adult brains of mice heterozygous for a X-linked Hmgcr-nls-lacZ transgene on a mutant mouse model of RTT. We found that there was no difference between the lacZ staining patterns in the brain of wild-type and heterozygous mutant embryos at embryonic day 9.5 (E9.5) suggesting that Mecp2 has no effect on the primary pattern of XCI. At 20 weeks of age, there was no significant difference between XCI patterns in the Purkinje cells in the cerebellum of heterozygous mutant and wild-type mice when the mutant allele was inherited from the mother. However, when the mutant allele was paternally inherited, a significant difference was detected. Thus, parental origin of the mutation may have a bearing on phenotype through XCI patterns. An estimation of the Purkinje cell precursor number based on XCI mosaicism revealed that, when the mutation was paternally inherited, the precursor number was less than that in the wild-type mice. Therefore, it is likely that the number of precursor cells allocated to the Purkinje cell lineage is affected by a paternally inherited mutation in Mecp2. We also observed that the pattern of XCI in cultured fibroblasts was significantly correlated with patterns in the Purkinje cells in mutant animals but not in wild-type mice.

Mammographic parenchymal patterns and risk of breast cancer at and after a prevalence screen in Singaporean women.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to assess the effect of mammographic parenchymal patterns on risk of breast cancer detected at first screen or in the period following a negative screen. METHODS: The study utilizes a nested case-control design with 132 breast cancer patients detected at first screen (from a total of 29 193 screened) and 42 breast cancer patients detected in the period following the first screen. These patients were matched to 348 screened-negative controls. The mammograms were classified according to Tabar's classification for parenchymal pattern and statistical analysis was done by conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: The risk of breast cancer for women with Tabar pattern IV was significantly high when compared to the remaining patterns (odds ratio 2.59). Risk factors for Tabar pattern IV coincided largely with established risk factors for breast cancer. CONCLUSION: The study confirms the increased risk of breast cancer associated with Tabar pattern IV (approximately Wolfe pattern P2), in an Asian population. This pattern is associated with nulliparity and high educational status and is strongly associated with grade 3 cancers.

Nano-area electron diffraction pattern reconstructed from three-dimensional Fourier spectrum.

A method to obtain a nano-area electron diffraction pattern in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was proposed, based on three-dimensional (3D)) image formation theory. This method allows us to reconstruct an electron diffraction pattern from a 3D Fourier spectrum of high-resolution through-focus images. As a test case, an electron diffraction pattern from a tilted Si single crystal was reconstructed using the proposed method and compared with the conventional selected-area electron diffraction pattern. The intensity distribution of the reconstructed electron diffraction pattern was confirmed to be qualitatively equal to that of the selected-area electron diffraction pattern, though the degree of the equivalency between these patterns reduces at the high frequency region and the reproducibility of the intensity degrades when the number of images used in the image processing was decreased. By selecting areas in a reconstructed exit wave field, some electron diffraction patterns were obtained from the nano-areas without the influence of spherical aberration.

Protein feeding pattern does not affect protein retention in young women.

This study was undertaken to determine whether a pulse protein feeding pattern was more efficient than a spread pattern to improve protein anabolism in young women as was already shown in elderly women. After a 15-d adaptive period [1.2 g protein/(kg fat-free mass. d)], 16 young women (age 26 +/- 1 y) were given a 14-d diet providing 1.7 g protein/(kg fat-free mass. d), using either a pulse pattern (protein consumed mainly in one meal, n = 8), or a spread pattern (spreading daily protein intake over four meals, n = 8). Nitrogen balance was determined at the end of both the 15-d adaptive and the 14-d experimental periods. Whole-body protein turnover was determined at the end of the 14-d experimental period using [(15)N]glycine as an oral tracer. Nitrogen balance was 17 +/- 5 mg N/(kg fat-free mass. d) during the adaptive period. It was higher during the experimental period, but not significantly different in the women fed the spread or the pulse patterns [59 +/- 12 and 36 +/- 8 mg N/(kg fat-free mass. d) respectively]. No significant effects of the protein feeding pattern were detected on either whole-body protein turnover [5.5 +/- 0.2 vs. 6.1 +/- 0.3 g protein/(kg fat-free mass. d) for spread and pulse pattern, respectively] or whole-body protein synthesis and protein breakdown. Thus, in young women, these protein feeding patterns did not have significantly different effects on protein retention.

Dietary pattern is associated with homocysteine and B vitamin status in an urban Chinese population.

To identify existing dietary patterns and examine associations between these patterns and plasma homocysteine and B vitamin concentrations in an urban Chinese population living in Beijing (n = 119), dietary information was collected with a food frequency questionnaire designed for this population. Plasma homocysteine and B vitamin concentrations were examined. Food group variables, expressed as percentages of total energy intake, were entered into cluster analysis to define three distinct dietary pattern groups. The prevalence of high homocysteine (>11 micromol/L for women and 12 micromol/L for men), was 31.9%; of low folate (<6.8 nmol/L), 36.2%; of low vitamin B-12 (<221 pmol/L), 36.9%; and of low vitamin B-6 (<30 nmol/L), 16.0%. The three dietary patterns derived were defined by relatively greater intake of 1) fruit and milk, 2) red meat and 3) refined cereals. More than 40% of subjects in the refined cereals group had high plasma homocysteine and low plasma folate concentrations, and 67% had low plasma vitamin B-12 concentrations. Those following the refined cereals pattern were 4 and 5.2 times more likely to have high homocysteine and low vitamin B-12 concentrations, respectively, relative to the fruit and milk dietary pattern group (P < 0.01), after adjustment for potential confounders. High intake of refined cereals was associated with low B vitamin and high homocysteine concentrations, whereas the pattern high in fruit and milk was associated with the lowest homocysteine. Dietary patterns appear to play an important role in the micronutrient and homocysteine status of these Chinese adults.

Major dietary patterns and risk of renal cell carcinoma in a prospective cohort of Swedish women.

Links between specific foods and the risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are not well established. Dietary patterns may be a better predictor of RCC risk. Our aim was to identify and examine major dietary patterns and their relation to the risk of RCC in a large prospective cohort study of Swedish women. Complete dietary information was available from a FFQ from 46,572 women aged 40-76 y at baseline. We conducted factor analysis to identify dietary patterns. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate rate ratios (RRs) and 95% CIs. During a mean of 14.3 y of follow-up, we identified 93 cases of RCC. We observed 3 major dietary patterns in the cohort: Healthy (vegetables, tomato, fish, fruits, poultry, whole grains), Western (sweets, processed meat, refined grains, margarine/butter, high-fat dairy products, fried potato, soft drinks, meat) and Drinker (wine, hard liquor, beer, snacks) pattern. Higher Healthy pattern scores were not significantly associated with decreased risk of RCC (highest vs. lowest tertile RR = 0.81; 95% CI 0.45-1.48 and RR = 0.54; 95% CI 0.27-1.10 among women < or = 65 y). There was a suggestion of an inverse association between the Drinker pattern and RCC risk (RR comparing the 2nd and 3rd with the first tertile, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.34-0.95; and 0.72; 95% CI, 0.42-1.22, respectively, P = 0.08 by Wald test); the association was clearer among women < or = 65 y (P = 0.02 by Wald test). Our data suggest an inverse association between Drinker pattern and the risk of RCC.

Dietary patterns and pancreatic cancer risk in men and women.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes appears to be associated with the development of pancreatic cancer. Three large prospective cohort studies observed a statistically significant relation between obesity and pancreatic cancer risk. Dietary patterns have been associated with fasting insulin levels and risk of diabetes. To determine whether dietary patterns are associated with pancreatic cancer risk, we analyzed data from two large prospective cohort studies. METHODS: We combined data for men and women to obtain a total of 366 cases of incident pancreatic cancer from a total of 124,672 eligible participants. Dietary data were obtained from food frequency questionnaires in 1986 for men and in 1984 for women. We identified two major dietary patterns, prudent and western, by factor analysis. The prudent pattern was characterized by high fruit and vegetable intake; the western pattern was characterized by high meat and high fat intakes. Multivariable relative risks (RRs) were adjusted for potential confounders, including smoking and body mass index. RESULTS: In the pooled analysis of men and women, no associations were observed between the prudent pattern (RR = 1.32, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.66 to 2.63, for highest versus lowest quintile) or the western pattern (RR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.57 to 1.47, for highest versus lowest quintile) and the risk of pancreatic cancer. Stratifying by body mass index or physical activity did not change the associations. CONCLUSION: Dietary patterns were not associated with the risk of pancreatic cancer in two large cohort studies of men and women.

The cortex-medulla oocyte growth pattern is organized during fetal life: an in-vitro study of the mouse ovary.

The cortex-medulla growth pattern of oocytes in the developing ovary is formed by a rim of small non-growing oocytes at the periphery and growing oocytes at the inner part of the cortex and in the medulla. In this study we aimed to: (i) develop an in-vitro model using fetal mouse ovaries to evaluate when the cortex-medulla growth pattern is organized during ovarian differentiation; and (ii) study the interaction between small, non-growing and growing oocytes. Fetal mouse ovaries of days 11, 13 and 16 post coitus (E11, E13 and E16) were cultured for 14, 12 and 9 days respectively, corresponding to post-partum day 7 (P7). A cortex-medulla growth pattern had developed by P7 in most ovaries from E16 and in half of those from E13. No ovaries from E11 developed a cortex-medulla pattern. The organization of this pattern within the ovary is concurrent with the initiation of meiosis. Ovaries with a cortex-medulla growth pattern had the same number of growing follicles (approximately 87), regardless of the number of small, non-growing oocytes present. In contrast, in most ovaries without a cortex-medulla pattern, almost all oocytes began to grow. Hence, the geographically determined growth pattern of oocytes in the developing mouse ovary may be organized at the onset of meiosis and is sustained by a balanced interaction between small and growing follicles.

GELBANK: a database of annotated two-dimensional gel electrophoresis patterns of biological systems with completed genomes.

GELBANK is a publicly available database of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) gel patterns of proteomes from organisms with known genome information (available at http://gelbank.anl.gov and ftp://bioinformatics.anl.gov/gelbank/). Currently it includes 131 completed, mostly microbial proteomes available from the National Center for Biotechnology Information. A web interface allows the upload of 2D gel patterns and their annotation for registered users. The images are organized by species, tissue type, separation method, sample type and staining method. The database can be queried based on protein or 2DE-pattern attributes. A web interface allows registered users to assign molecular weight and pH gradient profiles to their own 2D gel patterns as well as to link protein identifications to a given spot on the pattern. The website presents all of the submitted 2D gel patterns where the end-user can dynamically display the images or parts of images along with molecular weight, pH profile information and linked protein identification. A collection of images can be selected for the creation of animations from which the user can select sub-regions of interest and unlimited 2D gel patterns for visualization. The website currently presents 233 identifications for 81 gel patterns for Homo sapiens, Methanococcus jannaschii, Pyro coccus furiosus, Shewanella oneidensis, Escherichia coli and Deinococcus radiodurans.

Diastolic dysfunction and natriuretic peptides in systolic heart failure. Higher ANP and BNP levels are associated with the restrictive filling pattern.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction is common in patients with systolic heart failure and the restrictive type of filling pattern appears to be associated with increased cardiac mortality. Both artrial and brain (or ventricular) natriuretic peptides are also proven markers of the severity of heart failure. The aim of this study was to determine in a large cohort of patients with systolic heart failure whether diastolic abnormalities, and in particular the restrictive filling pattern of transmitral flow velocity, correlate with plasma atrial and brain natriuretic peptide levels. METHODS: Sixty-eight consecutive patients with symptomatic systolic heart failure (ejection fraction < 0.5) underwent two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography of left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, together with measurement of atrial and brain natriuretic peptides. RESULTS: The restrictive filling pattern was present in 62%, the abnormal relaxation pattern in 31% and only 7% were normal. Atrial and brain natriuretic peptide (ANP/BNP) levels were significantly higher in the restrictive compared to the abnormal relaxation group (ANP: 202.2 +/- 31.7 vs 102.5 +/- 22.1 pg.ml-1, P = 0.012; BNP: 277.8 +/- 27.7 vs 162.4 +/- 21.9 pg.ml-1, P = 0.002). In addition, a restrictive filling pattern was associated with lower ejection fractions (P = 0.026), higher pulmonary artery systolic pressure (P < 0.001), larger left atrial size (P = 0.044), and were more likely to be in New York Heart Association class III or IV than those with an abnormal relaxation pattern (P = 0.007). Both atrial and brain natriuretic peptides correlated inversely with ejection fraction (P < 0.001), fractional shortening (P < 0.001), and positively with pulmonary artery pressure (P = 0.004 and 0.001 respectively). There were no significant correlations between single diastolic parameters and atrial or brain natriuretic peptide levels for the total patient group except between mitral peak A wave velocity and brain natriuretic peptides (r = -0.3, P = 0.01). For those with abnormal relaxation pattern mitral, valve E-wave deceleration time correlated significantly with both atrial and brain natriuretic peptide levels (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms that the restrictive filling pattern of transmitral flow velocity is a marker of more severe heart failure, as indicated by its association with higher atrial and brain natriuretic peptide levels, lower ejection fraction and higher pulmonary artery pressure. Thus, this easily obtained Doppler-derived marker of diastolic dysfunction is useful for identifying those patients with more severe heart failure.

Age differences in movement patterns used to rise from a bed in subjects in the third through fifth decades of age.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to describe the movement patterns of middle-aged adults when rising from a bed and to determine whether there are age-related differences in movement patterns across the third through fifth decades of age. SUBJECTS: Ninety-three adults (30 men, 63 women), ranging in age from 30 to 59 years, participated in the study. METHODS: The subjects were videotaped during 10 trials of rising from a bed. Subjects comprised three age groups, as defined by the decades of the thirties, forties, and fifties. Movement patterns for four body regions were used to classify the videotaped performances. The incidence of each movement pattern was determined for each decade and graphed. RESULTS: Subjects in their thirties differed from older subjects in movement patterns used to rise from a bed. Movement pattern incidence varied across age groups for each body region. The movement patterns of one body region predominated in reverse order of a previously proposed developmental sequence. CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION: Results indicate physical therapists should consider the patient's age when selecting movement patterns to teach.

Synovial vascular patterns and angiogenic factors expression in synovial tissue and serum of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether subgroups of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients classified according to their synovial vascular pattern have a different expression of angiogenic mediators or exhibit distinct clinical or biological characteristics. METHODS: Arthroscopies were performed in 27 patients with RA and synovial samples were obtained. Vascular morphology was classified in three patterns: straight (S), tortuous (T) and mixed (M). Immunostaining was performed with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF), anti-vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR)-1, anti-VEGFR-2, anti-IL-8 and anti-TGF-beta, and measured by digital image analysis. Serum levels of VEGF, TGF-beta and IL-8, and clinical, radiographic and serological data were also analysed. RESULTS: Eleven (41%) patients had the S pattern, nine (33%) the M pattern and seven (26%) the T pattern. The S and M groups had a higher prevalence of rheumatoid factor positivity and erosive disease, and higher levels of markers of systemic inflammation compared with the T group. Synovial expression of VEGF was higher in the S and T groups compared with the M group, whereas TGF-beta was higher in the T compared with the S and M groups. Distinct synovial distribution of VEGF and TGF-beta between groups was also observed. CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary study suggests that RA patients with the S and M patterns share different clinical, biological and serological characteristics compared with those with the T pattern, which may constitute a group with less severe disease. Differences in the intensity and distribution of synovial expression of VEGF and TGF-beta observed between groups could have pathophysiological relevance. However, larger, prospective multicentre studies would be need to determine the clinical relevance of vascular patterns in RA.

The prognostic significance of tertiary Gleason pattern 5 in radical prostatectomy specimens.

In the Gleason grading system for prostatic cancer only the two most prevalent patterns are reported, although a third (tertiary) pattern grade may be present. We compared the pathologic stage of 227 radical prostatectomies with tertiary pattern 5 to the pathologic stage of 604 radical prostatectomies lacking a tertiary component. Gleason score 3 + 4 tumors with a tertiary pattern of 5 were more likely to present with higher stage disease than those Gleason score 3 + 4 tumors without a tertiary component (P = 0.012) and at a stage similar to Gleason score 3 + 5 tumors. Gleason score 4 + 3 tumors with a tertiary pattern of 5 were less likely to be organ-confined than Gleason score 4 + 3 tumors (P = 0.02) and less likely to have lymph node metastases than Gleason score 4 + 4 tumors (P = 0.027). However, Gleason score 4 + 4 with a tertiary pattern of 5 were indistinguishable from Gleason score 4 + 4 tumors. The relative effects of a tertiary pattern of 5 were greatest when the primary and secondary stages were low but become obscured by the already aggressive nature of advanced primary and secondary patterns. Therefore, except for very high-grade tumors, tertiary scoring of prostatic adenocarcinoma at radical prostatectomy should be reported as it has prognostic significance.

Influence of jet direction on pulmonary vein flow patterns in severe mitral regurgitation.

Pulmonary vein flow patterns measured with transesophageal echocardiography have been used recently to assess the severity of mitral valve regurgitation. This study was designed to determine whether regurgitant jet direction selectively influences the pattern of flow in right and left pulmonary veins. Thirty-seven patients undergoing mitral valve repair or replacement for severe valvular regurgitation were studied intraoperatively with biplane transesophageal echocardiography. Regurgitant jets were classified by color flow mapping as central or wall, with the latter further classified as septal, lateral, anterior, or posterior in the two orthogonal scan planes. Pulmonary vein flow patterns were measured with pulsed wave Doppler ultrasonography and categorized as showing normal, blunted, or reversed systolic flow. Right and left pulmonary vein flow patterns were identical in the majority of patients studied (78%). Eight patients had discordant flow patterns. In seven of eight patients, the more abnormal pattern was seen in the right pulmonary vein, despite the fact that the regurgitant jets were directed centrally in four of these seven patients. Since discordant pulmonary vein flow patterns occurred in 5 of 15 patients (33%) with central jets, but in only 3 of 22 patients (14%) with eccentric wall jets, it is unlikely that mitral regurgitation jet direction per se causes predictable and selective unilateral alteration in pulmonary vein flow patterns.

Comparison of balance responses and motor patterns during sit-to-stand task with functional mobility in stroke patients.

This study was undertaken to explore whether we could provide supportive laboratory evidence for the clinical observations that a stroke patient has lost functional mobility/locomotion capability based on dynamic balance responses (center of force sway patterns) and motor control activities (electromyography patterns) during the motor task of sit-to-stand. A computerized controlled dynamic postural control assessment system was developed and used in this study. Various dynamic balance indexes were introduced and derived from center of force sway patterns expressed in four domains (space, time, force, and frequency). Motor control was assessed by multichannel surface electromyography of each side of the lower limb during the same motor task. The functional mobility capability was evaluated using the traditional FIM method. Fourteen stroke patients with right hemiplegia and nine healthy elderly individuals were recruited as the experimental and control groups, respectively. Muscle activity was recorded for quadriceps, hamstrings, anterior tibialis, and triceps surae muscles and was used for analysis. Center of force sway patterns and ground reaction forces were registered. All signals were synchronized at "seat-off." Surface electromyographic patterns of activities recorded during sit-to-stand and dynamic balance indexes computed from center of force sway patterns were categorized and compared with the functional mobility scores. Results show that both the motor control patterns and dynamic balance indexes correlated well to the extent of mobility impairment evaluated using the traditional FIM method. An important conclusion for rehabilitation medicine is that the functional mobility capability of stroke patients may be expressed numerically using dynamic balance indexes and visualized graphically through electromyographic motor patterns.

Presentation and stability of noncognitive symptom patterns in patients with Alzheimer disease.

The purpose of this study was to investigate noncognitive symptoms in Alzheimer disease to identify symptom patterns and to study stability of such patterns prospectively. Furthermore, variables were examined that could be associated with certain types of symptom patterns or could be predictors of change of these patterns. Forty-eight patients with the clinical diagnosis of probable Alzheimer disease were included in this study and were assessed weekly over a 3-week period. Noncognitive symptoms were rated according to the Behavioral Abnormalities in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale and the Dementia Mood Assessment Scale and to a set of items that specifically assess misidentifications. By means of principal component factor analysis different noncognitive symptom patterns were obtained, yielding a four-factor solution. They mapped onto rational domains with respect to clinical experience: depression, apathy, psychotic symptoms/aggression, and misidentifications/agitation. Demographic and clinical variables were not associated with the factor solutions and did not predict change of the factor values. The results demonstrate that in Alzheimer disease there are distinct noncognitive symptom patterns that hold at least short-term prospective stability. None of the examined clinical variables, such as age at entry, the status of the patients (outpatient or inpatient), or dementia severity, exerted substantial influence on the noncognitive symptom patterns. Further investigations should concentrate on the pathological and prognostic correlates of noncognitive symptom patterns in Alzheimer disease.

Study of corneal topographic patterns with single continuous suturing techniques in penetrating keratoplasty.

PURPOSE: To study the corneal topographic patterns following three different types of single continuous suturing techniques in penetrating keratoplasty. METHODS: One hundred forty-eight maps obtained from 40 patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty with single continuous suturing were retrospectively analyzed at a tertiary eye care center. The videokeratograph maps were obtained on the Eye Sys System 2000 at 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery. Suture adjustment was done for cases with astigmatism greater than 3 diopters, and maps were also obtained after suture adjustment. The maps were classified according to the corneal profile and the astigmatic pattern seen in the topographic maps. RESULTS: Combined prolate patterns were seen most frequently, and their proportion was significantly higher at 1 month ( p= 0.009), 3 months ( p= 0.0004), and 6 months ( p= 0.0008). The simulated keratometric astigmatism was significantly higher in the prolate group compared with the other groups at 1 month ( p= 0.0021). However, all the topographic patterns showed comparable magnitude of astigmatism after suture adjustment and at 3 and 6 months. The antitorque suturing technique showed a higher proportion of prolate maps compared with the other suturing techniques. CONCLUSIONS: Prolate patterns of the cornea are the most frequently seen patterns after single continuous suturing, which is the normal physiological pattern of the cornea. The initial astigmatism is higher in the prolate pattern, which can be successfully reduced with suture adjustment.

Changes in physical activity patterns in the United States, by sex and cross-sectional age.

PURPOSE: To determine sex-specific, age-related changes in physical activity patterns. METHODS: We examined cross-sectional data from the National Health Interview Survey, using the 1992 Youth Risk Behavior Survey supplement for adolescents and the 1991 Health Promotion/Disease Prevention supplement for adults. Physical activity patterns were modeled after Healthy People 2000 objectives. RESULTS: Among adolescents, physical activity patterns generally eroded most from ages 15 through 18. The "regular, vigorous activity" and strengthening patterns declined consistently from ages 12 through 21. Young adulthood (18-29 yr) often marked continuing erosion of activity patterns, whereas middle adulthood (30-64 yr) often revealed relatively stable patterns. At retirement age (65 yr), there was a stabilizing, or even an improving, tendency in activity patterns, usually followed by further erosion through the final period of life. Strengthening behavior eroded dramatically with advancing age among adults, especially among men. Among adolescents, differences between female and male respondents were large for regular, vigorous activity (11.3 percentage points greater for male respondents). In comparison with female adolescents and adults, male respondents reported much higher rates of regular, sustained activity (5.5 and 5.9 percentage points, respectively), and strengthening (18.2 and 11.3 percentage points, respectively). Among adults, levels of physical inactivity among women were moderately greater (5.5 percentage points) than for men. Absolute rates of change per year were mostly large to very large (3.0-8.0 percentage points x yr(-1)) during ages 15-18 yr, but, for adults, they were small (<0.5 percentage points x yr(-1)) for 33 of 40 sex, age, and pattern groupings. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that early and continued intervention will be necessary to offset these declines in physical activity throughout adolescence and adulthood.
