Of 1,703 patients undergoing arterial procedures during a three-year period, 81 (4.7%) required reoperation within 72 hours because of early complications. Thrombosis (58 patients) and hemorrhage (19 patients) were the most frequent complications encountered. Reoperation was successful in salvaging a successful outcome in the majority of patients after both hemorrhagic and thrombotic complications. The results seem to justify a continued aggressive approach to the management of early complications following vascular reconstructive procedures.

In elderly and senile patients with acute cholecystitis, the decrease in the content of T-lymphocytes and their functional activity, number of B-lymphocytes and IgG level, increase in the IgM and IgA content were noted. The attenuation of non-specific protective mechanisms was revealed. In patients, who underwent the purposeful immunocorrection with prodigiosan, proper-myl, methyluracil and staphylococcal adsorbed anatoxin, the number and activity of T-lymphocytes normalized, number of B-lymphocytes increased at the time of operation and after it. This contributed to reduction of the incidence of the inflammatory complications 3-fold.

The aim of this study was to assess the complications of surgical treatment of patients with laryngeal cancer undergoing functional neck dissection (FND). Local and medical complications, post-operative sequelae, post-operative stay and fatality rate were recorded in 195 patients. Overall complication rate was 43.07%, with 45 wound infections; 35 wound dehiscences; 39 serohematomas; 4 chylous fistulae; and 11 hemorrhages (2 cases of internal jugular vein rupture). Medical complications were seen in 11 patients. The significant association of pharyngocutaneous fistula with wound infection and dehiscence raises a reasonable doubt about the relative participation of FND in the reported complication rate. Overall incidence of surgical fatality as a result of complications was 2.56% (5/195). Permanent sequelae were found in 4.24% of FNDs (11/259). The average hospitalization was 25.17 +/- 19.88 days. Although an accurate evaluation of intrinsic complications of FND is difficult to perform in patients with combined single-state surgery for the tumor and the neck, most complications of FND are local and easy to manage.

In a prospective study comprising 2609 consecutive surgical patients, of whom 1166 were anesthetized with halothane, four cases of hepatitis were encountered. The incidence of hepatitis among those who received halothane was 1:292 in our material. The high incidence may be explained by the recognition of milder forms of hepatitis and by the selection of the series (over 40 years). Serum alanine aminotransferase should be investigated in all patients with postoperative pyrexia of unknown origin if mild forms of halothane hepatitis are to be discovered. The patient's history should be carefully examined for previous postoperative pyrexia of unknown origin following halothane anesthesia, in which case other anesthetics should be chosen.
