Absolute measurement of a long, arbitrary distance to less than an optical fringe.

A scheme is proposed for high-precision, absolute length measurement for an arbitrary optical distance of a few meters to beyond 10(6) m. The approach utilizes a phase-stabilized femtosecond laser to provide both incoherent, time-of-flight information and coherent, fringe-resolved interferometry. Such a combined measurement capability allows an optical wavelength resolution to be achieved for absolute length measurement over a large dynamic range.

Tunable sub-10-fs ultraviolet pulses generated by achromatic frequency doubling.

Tunable UV pulses shorter than 10 fs are generated by achromatic frequency doubling of a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier. With a suitable two-prism sequence we achieve first- and second-order achromatic phase matching and increase the natural bandwidth of the nonlinear crystal by a factor of 80. Extremely broad UV spectra with a Fourier limit of 2.9 fs are generated in a 360-microm-thick beta-barium borate crystal at a conversion efficiency of 20%. We compensate for the angular dispersion and the first-order chirp of the highly stable UV pulses with a second prism sequence and fully characterize the temporal pulse shape with zero-additional-phase spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (ZAP-SPIDER). Pulses as short as 7 fs are generated by controlling the higher-order chirp with a deformable mirror.

Intensity fluctuations and degree of polarization in three-dimensional thermal light fields.

The normalized intensity fluctuations of arbitrary electromagnetic wave fields obeying Gaussian statistics are expressed in terms of the three-dimensional degree of polarization. This general formulation implies an important physical result concerning the polarization of planar fields and the dimensionality of the formalism. The results are expected to be particularly useful in intensity interferometry.

Interferometric technique for measuring broadband ultrashort pulses at the sampling limit.

We present a new technique for measuring ultrashort optical pulses by use of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction that is suitable for large bandwidth pulses. The method does not require generation of a replica of the pulse to be measured and encodes the spectral phase information in a spatial interference pattern. A major advantage of this method is that the spectral sampling saturates the Whittaker-Shannon bound. Moreover, the technique allows for the characterization of some types of space-time coupling. An experimental demonstration of the technique is presented.

Sapphire-fiber-based white-light interferometric sensor for high-temperature measurements.

We present a fiber-optic temperature sensor with a single-crystal sapphire fiber as the light guide and a sapphire wafer as the sensing element. Temperature is determined by measurement of the thermal dependence of the wafer's optical thickness by use of white-light interferometry. We applied digital signal processing techniques to analyze the sensor's spectrum. A prototype sensor was tested to 1600 degrees C and demonstrated excellent reproducibility. An accuracy of +/- 0.2% full scale was obtained. The sensor is simple, small, and flexible, with potential advantages of batch fabrication and easy calibration.

Spectral-domain phase microscopy.

Broadband interferometry is an attractive technique for the detection of cellular motions because it provides depth-resolved phase information via coherence gating. We present a phase-sensitive technique called spectral-domain phase microscopy (SDPM). SDPM is a functional extension of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography that allows for the detection of nanometer-scale motions in living cells. The sensitivity of the technique is demonstrated, and its calibration is verified. A shot-noise limit to the displacement sensitivity of this technique is derived. Measurement of cellular dynamics was performed on spontaneously beating cardiomyocytes isolated from chick embryos.

Mid-infrared electric field characterization using a visible charge-coupled-device-based spectrometer.

We characterize ultrashort mid-infrared pulses through upconversion by using the stretched pulses obtained from the uncompressed output of a chirped-pulse amplifier. The power spectrum thus translated into the visible region can be readily measured with a standard silicon CCD camera-based spectrometer. The spectral phase is also characterized by a variant of zero-added-phase spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction. This is a general method that provides a multiplex advantage over conventional infrared detector array-based methods.

Core-clad silver halide fibers with few modes and a broad transmission in the mid-infrared.

There is interest in single-mode fibers that are highly transparent in the mid-infrared. Such fibers would be valuable for spectroscopy, interferometry, and heterodyne detection. We have developed core-clad fibers made of crystalline silver halides with an external diameter of 900 microm and core diameters as small as 60 microm. These fibers exhibit homogeneous core and cladding regions, round cores, and smooth core-cladding interfaces. The 60 microm fibers support roughly 70 modes and have low losses over a broad spectral range in the mid-infrared. This will pave the road for the development of single-mode mid-infrared fibers. ie ty of America

Phase-locked widely tunable optical single-frequency generator based on a femtosecond comb.

We present an arbitrary optical single-frequency generator based on a femtosecond optical frequency comb. The functions of this device are comparable to those of a radio-frequency synthesizer. However, this device operates at hundreds of terahertz. The absolute frequency accuracy of this synthesizer is approximately 1 kHz at a 282 THz carrier frequency. The stability is approximately 2 x 10(-14) at 100 s, and the tuning speed exceeds 30 GHz/s. This source demonstrates the integration of a phase-locked optical comb into a versatile and easy-to-use system for the generation of tunable, absolute optical frequencies. By using downconversion, one could generate tunable terahertz frequencies that are phase locked to a microwave reference, such as a Cs atomic clock, and high-precision interferometry could benefit greatly from the stability and accuracy of this widely tunable source.

Femtosecond laser pulses for surface-profile metrology.

We discuss two ways to use femtosecond pulsed lasers as a new interferometric light source for enhanced precision surface-profile metrology. First, a train of ultrafast laser pulses yields repeated low temporal coherence, which allows unequal-path scanning interferometry, which is not feasible with white light, to be performed. Second, the high spatial coherence of femtosecond pulsed lasers enables large-sized optics to be tested in nonsymmetric configurations with relatively small-sized reference surfaces. These two advantages are verified experimentally with Fizeau and Twyman-Green type scanning interferometers.

Demonstration of a multiwave coherent holographic beam combiner in a polymeric substrate.

We demonstrate an efficient coherent holographic beam combiner (CHBC) that uses angle multiplexing of gratings in a thick polymeric substrate. Our experimental results compare well with the theoretical model based on the coupled-wave theory of multiwave mixing in a passive medium. A CHBC of this type may prove useful in producing a high-power laser by combining amplified beams produced by splitting a master oscillator. Furthermore, the ability to angle multiplex a large number of beams enables a CHBC to be used in multiple-beam interferometry applications as a high-precision surface sensor.

Method of making mosaic gratings by using a two-color heterodyne interferometer containing a reference grating.

We propose and demonstrate a two-color heterodyne interferometric method for making a perfect mosaic of two planar gratings that can substitute for a single and larger grating without introducing wavefront aberration at any wavelength. The lateral and longitudinal phase errors are separated and eliminated by use of two wavelengths in the interferometry. The accuracy of the phase difference measurement is improved by this heterodyne scheme. The method ensures that the lateral gap between the two subaperture gratings is an integer multiple of the grating period. For a pair of 0.72 microm period gratings we experimentally achieved a lateral alignment error of less than 1% of the grating period.

The method combines the principles of common path interferometry and single-shot phase imaging and is characterized by subnanometer path-length stability and millisecond-scale acquisition time. The potential of the technique for quantifying nanoscale motions in live cells is demonstrated by experiments on red blood cells.

In situ broadband pulse compression for multiphoton microscopy using a shaper-assisted collinear SPIDER.

The characterization and control of the phase of broadband femtosecond pulses in nonlinear microscopy are successfully demonstrated with a collinear configuration of spectral shear interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER). A femtosecond-pulse shaper is used as a dispersionless interferometer for the measurement of the spectral phase and to actively compress a broadband supercontinuum from a photonic crystal fiber. This allows in situ online phase management and enables the application of quantum control spectroscopy in microenvironments.

Quantitative phase-contrast microscopy by a lateral shear approach to digital holographic image reconstruction.

Combining the concept of lateral shear interferometry (LSI) within a digital holography microscope, we demonstrate that it is possible to obtain quantitative optical phase measurement in microscopy by a new single-image-processing procedure. Numerical lateral shear of the reconstructed wavefront in the image plane makes it possible to retrieve the derivative of the wavefront and remove the defocus aberration term introduced by the microscope objective. The method is tested to investigate a silicon structure and a mouse cell line.

Stokes parameters and polarization contrasts in Young's interference experiment.

We derive a spectral interference law that governs the behavior of the four Stokes parameters in Young's two-pinhole experiment with a random electromagnetic beam. In addition to the visibility of intensity fringes, we introduce three new contrast parameters that describe the interference-induced changes in the field's state of partial polarization. The polarization modulation depends on the electric field correlations at the pinholes and is closely related to the two-point Stokes parameters. The results are expected to be particularly useful in polarization interferometry and electromagnetic coherence theory. The formalism is demonstrated with specific examples.

Amplitude and phase analysis in digital dynamic holography.

Lensless in-line digital holographic interferometry has the potential for vibration analysis of objects smaller than 5 mm in diameter. This is particularly useful for dynamic characterization of microelectromechanical systems devices. To achieve this, there is a need to magnify the object wave, which is done using a diverging beam. It is observed that an increase in the object-to-CCD distance increases the sensitivity of the amplitude-modulated time-average fringes. At the same time the effect on phase information that represents the mean static deformation of a vibrating object is studied. It is also observed that a reduction in the object-to-CCD distance increases the phase sensitivity as evidenced by the double-exposure time-average fringes. The experimental observation and a theoretical explanation for this contradictory phenomenon are presented.

Effect of focal spot size on in-band 13.5 nm extreme ultraviolet emission from laser-produced Sn plasma.

The effect of focal spot size on in-band 13.5 nm extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission from laser-produced Sn plasmas was investigated for an EUV lithography light source. Almost constant in-band conversion efficiency from laser to 13.5 nm EUV light was noted with focal spot sizes from 60 to 500 microm. This effect may be explained by the opacity of Sn plasmas. Optical interferometry showed that the EUV emission must pass through a longer plasma with higher density when the focal spot is large, and strong reabsorption of EUV light was confirmed by a dip located at 13.5 nm in the spectrum.
