Light and electron microscopic studies on the oesophageal epithelium of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri.

The oesophageal epithelium of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, showed a gradual transition from stratified cuboidal type containing mainly filament-containing cells and globular Type I mucous cells anteriorly to a simple columnar type composed entirely of Type II mucous cells distally. Taste buds were present in the anterior portion; mucous glands were located in the lamina propria in the middle portion and these were replaced with gastric-type glands in the terminal portion. Type I mucous cells severally produced neutral, carboxylated and sulphated mucosubstances while each Type II cell produced all the three types of mucosubstance. In the higher layers of the anterior multilaminar epithelium, the cytoplasm of the filament-containing cells contained numerous small vesicles with cores of flocculent material and the luminal aspects of the surface cells bore microridges. The vesicles contained in Types I and II mucous cells differed in size, arrangement and mode of release. These findings suggest that there is maximal development of protective features, both structural and lubricatory , which aid the oesophagus in the conduction of food materials. Additional sensory and digestive functions are also indicated.

[Smell and taste thresholds in older people].

The smell and taste ability of 105 persons at an age of 65 to 93 years was examined by adequate qualitative and semiquantitative chemical and electrogustometric methods. The basic levels of seniors were found above the levels of younger people. For the sense of smelling a significant connection of age and smell sensitivity could be measured. There was no difference between men and women using chemical test methods. With electrogustometry, however, women had a better taste sensitivity than men. At the age of 65 the taste levels are at a fix point. No higher levels could be realized in older persons. A significant reduction of smell ability was recognized in persons with reduction of cerebral blood flow and in smokers. The taste ability was disturbed in cases of diabetes, in persons using dental prostheses and selectively for "salty" in cases of hypertonia and "bitter" in smokers. Loss of taste was recognized in two women who used NaF-drugs, but also some other drugs were able to induce smell and taste alteration.

Anatomy of the oro-nasal region of some species of Tenrecidae and considerations of Tupaiids and Lemurids.

The place of the tree shrews in the phylogeny and taxonomy of the eutherians has become a very controversial problem. The crux of this matter is our rather poor knowledge of the anatomy of the modern insectivores. More sufficient data on the morphology of the insectivores would facilitate a judgement about whether the modern tree shrews are possible extant representatives of a group which was ancestral to the primates. The oro-nasal region is a complex of anatomically heterogeneous structures which are in functional cooperation. Because of the anatomical heterogeneity and the various functions of the structures constituting the oro-nasal complex, the study of this area has already provided a few data which might be relevant to this problem. The extant insectivores are in any event a phylogenetically heterogeneous group which cannot be considered an evolutionary entity. They are surviving relics, of different phylogenetic ages, of an eutherian fauna which flourished in middle to late cretaceous times. Therefore we can expect to see very diverse anatomical characteristics within the insectivores, which impede the accurate classification of the tree shrews. In this study it is demonstrated that there are essential differences within the oro-nasal region of the Tenrecoidea although the material available for anatomical studies was limited. Most important is that Setifer and Echinops possess an unpaired ductus nasopalatinus communis, which originates from the fusion of the paired nasopalatine ducts. The papilla palatina is absent; the ductus nasopalatinus communis opens into the cavum oris through a median unpaired orifice. Taste buds are absent in that area.

Detection and localization of alkaline and acid phosphatases in the digestive system of the adult Catla catla (Hamilton), an Indian freshwater major carp by histochemical methods.

The localization and distribution of alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) and acid phosphatase (ACPase) in the various regions of the alimentary canal viz., buccopharynx, oesophagus, intestine, rectum and hepatopancreas of adult Catla catla have been studied by employing various histochemical techniques. ALPase activity was recorded in the various regions of the alimentary canal in the present study although its intensity of localization and distribution varies greatly. The highest ALPase activity was detected in the columnar epithelial cells of the intestine including their brush border, sub-mucosal layer as well as in the basement membrane while intense activity of the same was observed in the epithelial cells (stratified and columnar) of the buccopharynx and oesophagus, hepatic and pancreatic acinar cells. The intense localization of ALPase was also found in the nuclei of the epithelial cells (stratified and columnar), sub-mucosal connective tissue nuclei, hepatic cell nuclei, and sub-mucosal polysaccharide granules of the intestine. The moderate ALPase activity was detected in the neuroepithelial cells of the taste buds in the buccopharynx, cytoplasm of the epithelial cells (stratified and columnar) and muscularis layers. The blood vessels of the intestine and rectum also furnished moderate ALPase activity. The weak ALPase activity was noticed in the brush border of the rectum and also in the basement membrane. Intense ACPase activity was recorded in the striated border of the intestinal villi, while moderate activity of the same was detected in the nuclei of the stratified and columnar epithelial cells of the various regions of the alimentary canal as well as in the hepatic and pancreatic acinar cells. Very weak ACPase activity was localized in the cytoplasm of the stratified epithelial cells of the buccopharynx and oesophagus.

Chemical stimulation of single human fungiform taste papillae: sensitivity profiles and locus of stimulation.

Psychophysical responses to chemical stimulation of single human fungiform taste papillae were obtained from 40 papillae in four subjects. Effects of solution concentration and locus of stimulation were examined for nine test compounds. Sensitivity profiles constructed for individual papillae showed that single fungiform papillae mediate more than a single taste quality. In addition, the chemical sensitivities of individual papillae were reflected in their thresholds for all compounds, and correlation coefficients between recognition thresholds were no greater for similar than for dissimilar tasting compounds. No differences in mediation of quality were found as a function of locus of stimulation on the papilla, although sensitivity was found to be greater on the dorsal surface than on the sides. The data were discussed within the context of previous studies of response characteristics of single papilla.

[Distribution of ABH substances in normal secretor human tissue cells by avidin-biotin complex method].

The distribution and location of ABH substances in 54 various kinds of normal secretor human tissue cell of known ABO type were studied by Avidin-Biotin complex (ABC) method. It was firstly demonstrated that 18 different kinds of tissue cells contained ABH substances, which were as follows: neuron and nerve fiber, astrocyte, oligodendrocyte, ependyma epithelial cells, epithelial cells of soft meninges, epithelial cells of parotid gland duct, taste bud cells of tongue, acinar and epithelial cells of duct of buccal gland, epithelial cells of rectal mucous membrane gland, regenerated liver cells of hepatocirrhosis, basal cells of stratified aquamous epithelium of epiglottis, spermiogenesis and spermatozoa of seminiferous tubules, epithelial cells of tubuli reti, rete testis and tubuli epididymis, both primary and secondary follicles of ovary and decidua cells of endometrium. Some new phenomena were observed as follows: ABH substances in chief cells more than those in parietal cells of gastric gland, locally distributed ABH positive cells in stratum spinosum of stratified squamous epithelium of skin, segmentally distributed ABH positive cells in pseudostratified ciliated columanal epithelium of epiglottis. The ABH substances were located at the infranuclear and/or supranuclear region and/or brush border of the epithelial cells of submaxillary gland, mosaic distributed ABH substances were found in the epithelia of both sweat and submaxillary glandular ducts. A few controversies about distribution of ABH substances were solved. The relationship between H and A, B substances, origin of ABH substances, source of ABH substances in body fluids. Production of ABH substances and cell differentiation, mosaicism and inconsistency of ABH distribution are discussed and compared with other reports.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
