[Foreign bodies in the digestive tract].

In the past two years time 128 patients-prisoners, who had swallowed foreign bodies, have been observed. Six anchors and crosses, which had been stuck in the esophagus, were immediately and successfully removed endoscopically. Long rods and crosses (60 cases) situated mostly in the stomach or descending part of the duodenum were operated without any complications. A few weeks delay of operation caused the covered perforation of the alimentary tract wall nearly 20% of cases and one of which died. Ingested small foreign bodies (less than 10 cm in length) are harmless, pass spontaneously through the gastrointestinal tract and don't need any surgical intervention. In a few cases those small foreign bodies perforated the guts, covered outside the digestive tract without any complaints.

Clinical characteristics of aero-digestive foreign bodies in neurologically impaired children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if children with neurological impairment are at additional risk for foreign body aspiration or impaction and if they present with a different clinical course than normal children. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary care children's hospital. PATIENTS AND OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective chart review of 328 consecutive procedures for aero-digestive foreign body removal over a 6 year period was performed. Of these patients 52 (15.9%) were identified with neurological impairment. RESULTS: Compared with the non-impaired children, those with neurological impairment were older, diagnosed later, hospitalized longer and had a higher incidence of complications. CONCLUSION: A greater index of suspicion is needed to timely treat aero-digestive foreign bodies in children with neurological impairment. These children may not be receiving the necessary attention when presenting with non-specific symptoms.

[Acute pancreatitis caused by foreign bodies. 2 cases].

We report the cases of two patients with acute pancreatitis caused by the insertion of foreign bodies in the ampulla of Vater: vegetal residues in the first case and beltbuckle in the second case. The acute pancreatitis was revealed by severe epigastric pain, jaundice and a serum amylase increase to more than 9 times the upper limit of normal level. The presence of foreign bodies was detected by endoscopic retrograde cholangiography and pancreatography in the first case and by abdominal X-ray examination in the second case. Extraction of vegetal residues was performed by endoscopic route whereas that of the beltbuckle required surgery. From these 2 cases and 8 others previously reported cases, the clinical features and course of acute pancreatitis caused by foreign bodies have been analysed.

Penetrating oesophageal foreign bodies in the thyroid gland.

Oesophageal penetration and migration of oesophageal foreign bodies into the thyroid gland is extremely rare with only occasional case reports appearing in the medical literature over the years. This is a retrospective review of four patients who were managed for penetrating oesophageal foreign bodies in the thyroid gland over an 11-year period. The clinical, radiological and intra-operative findings of the four cases are discussed.

Neck abscess secondary to perforation and complete extraluminal migration of a pharyngeal foreign body (wire): a case report.

Only a small number of ingested foreign bodies perforate the food passage and even a smaller fraction migrate extraluminally. This report describes a 15-year-old male patient who developed neck abscess due to perforation and complete extraluminal migration of a pharyngeal foreign body (wire). The wire was removed by surgical exploration of the neck, while the lumen of the upper food and air passages were normal.

Perforated jejunal diverticulum due to foreign body.

Inflammation is the commonest cause of jejunal diverticulum perforation. Perforation from foreign body is a clinical rarity, with only two cases documented. A third case of perforation due to foreign body is presented with a brief review of the literature.

[Removal of foreign bodies from the tracheobronchial system in childhood].

We have reviewed 103 cases of rigid tracheobronchoscopies that were performed in pediatric patients at the ENT University Hospital in Tübingen between 1989 and 1997. In 84% of our patients the indication for endoscopy was the suspicion of foreign body aspiration, while others were congenital dysplasia in the tracheobronchial tree, tracheomalacia or lesions after long-term intubation. After evaluation of all rigid bronchoscopies in children through age 12, we found that 69% had one or more foreign bodies. Except for one case of a needle, all foreign bodies could be removed by rigid bronchoscopy. There were no serious complications such as bleeding or airway obstruction requiring tracheotomy. At the University Hospital rigid tracheobronchoscopy was found to be an effective and safe procedure. In particular, the procedure should be carried out if the history or clinical findings suggest foreign body aspiration.

[Intravesical foreign bodies. Review of the literature].

We want to make a literature review about the bladder foreign bodies. This clinical situation is not an usual emergency, but there are a lot of references in urological articles about it. In this article review we want to make a compilation about the symtoms, the different origins of the foreign bodies, and ways of diagnosis and treatment of this pathology. We also want to add our personal experience in a recent case.

A very unusual intravesical foreign body in a male.

We present a case of a battery as foreign body in the bladder in a 36-year-old man. Many kinds of foreign bodies in the bladder have been reported but to our knowledge this is the first case of a battery. The diagnosis and the treatment of the case is discussed.

[The ingestion of foreign bodies for the purpose of self-injury. The conservative treatment of 2 clinical cases].

Although not rare, the ingestion of foreign bodies becomes uncommon when it is done with intent to cause self-damage. When used for this purpose, foreign bodies usually take the form of liquid substances, such as caustic agents, detergents, poisons, etc. It is less rare in certain situations like psychiatric and prison settings. The author reports two cases of foreign bodies voluntarily swallowed by patients in prison.

[A foreign body in the knee joint--a very rare injury in children].

Cause of uncertain knee-complaints in children can be foreign bodies which penetrated unnoticed the joint cavity. Here we report an unusual injury of this kind. A glass-foreign body intruded the knee joint in childhood. Complaints occurred for the first time in adult age. The diagnostic and therapeutic measures in such injuries are shown. At removal of the foreign body tetanus immunisation is necessary.

Foreign body reactions to monofilament and braided polypropylene mesh used as preperitoneal implants in pigs.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the foreign body reaction of the monofilament polypropylene (Prolene) mesh, and the multifilament Surgipro mesh. Both types of mesh are widely used in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. DESIGN: Prospective experimental study. SETTING: University hospital, The Netherlands. MATERIAL: Six female Yorkshire & Dutch landway pigs. INTERVENTION: Laparoscopic transabdominal implantation of six Surgipro meshes and six Prolene meshes in 12 inguinal sites. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: At 3, 6, and 12 weeks after implantation the foreign body reaction was measured by counting multinucleated giant cells at the mesh-tissue interface. RESULTS: At all times the numbers of multinucleated giant cells at the mesh tissue interface were significantly larger with Surgipro than with Prolene (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: There is significantly more foreign body reaction after implantation of Surgipro than Prolene mesh.
