[Psychogenic reactions in cancer patients].

An overall (at random) study of 183 patients with cancer of the stomach or rectum at an oncological hospital showed that all cases had certain psychogenic reactions, which differed both by their clinical expression and severity. The type and severity of psychogenic reactions correlated with the stage of treatment (diagnostic, preoperational, etc.) sex, age, education and the localization of the tumor and premorbid personality traits. The paper offers data on the use of combined treatment (psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic impact) aimed at removal of psychogenic disorders.

[Tilt, life and falling sensations in neurotically disturbed persons].

The present study is based on systematic observation of ten patients who reported having sensations of falling at more or less frequent intervals, either during an analysis session or in the course of their daily lives. This investigation is intended to shed light on the psychic causes of these phenomena, show the genetic conditions and inborn reaction mechanisms that lead to them, and, finally, list pointers as to how phenomena of this kind might be better understood and categorized when they appear in neurotic patients.

Confirmation of deviant EEG-evoked potential relationships in the neuroses.

A previous study of relationships between EEG and somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) measurements in psychiatric patients showed correlations between EEG and SEP amplitudes to be negative in nine neurotic patients and positive in nine age- and sex-matched nonpatients. The present study attempted to replicate this finding in 35 neurotics and 35 age- and sex-matched nonpatients. Data involved amplitudes of SEPs to right median nerve stimuli from frontal, central, and parietal leads and central and parietal EEG amplitudes (eyes open and closed), both obtained in the context of our comprehensive EP recording procedure. Correlations between SEP and EEG amplitudes in controls were generally positive, while those in patients tended to be negative or close to zero. No specific neurosis group differed from the others. The results confirm the previous finding in showing absence of normal EEG-SEP amplitude relationships in neurotic disorders.

[Clinical features of the Kandinsky-Clerambault syndrome in schizophrenic patients and prognosis].

The paper deals with the typology of conditions with a delusional variant of the Kandinsky-Clerambault syndrome in schizophrenia. At the basis of the differentiation there lie different types of delusional disturbances in the structure of which the syndrome is formed. Accordingly, 4 types of conditions have been distinguished: 1. developing in combination with interpretative systematized delusions; 2. interpretative non-systematized delusions; 3. acute fantastic paraphrenic delusions; 4. acute sensual delusions. Certain correlations were demonstrated between these types of delusional disturbances and the indices of the gravity of the schizophrenic process (the form of disease development, quality of negative disturbances, the depths of process intensification, following each of the types of conditions, index of working capacity, duration of attacks). The typology presented is discussed in the light of prognosis of the severity of the development of schizophrenias and its treatment.

[The concept of metamorphosis in psychopathology].

The authors take into account the psychopathological issue of "metamorphosis" (or transformation of the Self) firstly with the observation of some clinical cases. The psychopathological problem is set as a disorder of the s.c. "awareness of the Self" and considered in the light of a close relationship with the subjective body experience. The clinical discussion on the metamorphosis problem is developed taking also into account the data coming from the anthropological research.

[A case of phantom syndrome].

The author discussed a case of the phantomatic syndrome. The paper suggests a close connection between the social stress and biological predispositions for the occurrence of the phantomatic syndrome. Some data making the grounds for concluding psychological mechanisms determining the onset were also considered. Attention was drawn to the fact that different mental mechanisms developed for the purpose of dealing with the conflict which took predominant positions in distinct stages. The phantomatic syndrome can be treated as an initial form of psychosis. The therapy of the phantomatic syndrome involves the following phases: (1) pharmacotherapy, (2) psychotherapy and sometimes (3) surgical procedure (e.g. plastic surgery operation) is required.
