This study describes two new DC-potentials, which are related to auditory or optical imagination. The "auditory imagination potential" (AIP) is a negative DC-shift on the vertex lasting during the whole period of an auditory imagination. During an optical imagination there is a similar negative DC-shift in the ocipital region only. These "imagination potentials" can be already recognized in the "raw-EEG" by means of a special experimental technique. The magnitude of amplitudes correlates with the degree of concentration of the subject. In the case of intense imaginations potentials with amplitudes up to 20 muV and a duration of some seconds are recorded. The comparison between the vertex and the occipital lead permits the examination of the alternate occurence of auditory and optical conscious processes. The "imagination potentials" (AIP and OIP) are not related to any external stimulation or motor reaction and represent modality-specific EEG-correlates of cognitive, conscious processes (memory and imagination). Their significance for the "objective audiometry" is discussed.
The literature on minimal brain dysfunction is confused, confusing and controversial. The statements that the condition exists, needs treatment, and that treatment may be pharmacological, are more expressions of faith than accepted fact. We believe they are true (within limits not discussed in the article). Furthermore, there is evidence that some patients with MBD are hypo-aroused, while others are not. The role of deanol in the treatment of MBD is still unclear, because of the complexities of identifying appropriate patients in terms of levels of arousal, as well as identifying appropriate measures of response. There is sufficient support for an effect of deanol in the literature to justify further investigation. Further studies should attend to important methodological problems as discussed.

This is a study of possible CNV correlations to schizophrenia. Three groups of schizophrenic patients were examined: 14 patients with an initial acute psychotic illness, before and after neuroleptic therapy; 9 subjects with chronic schizophrenia, who did not require continuous neuroleptic therapy; 18 patients with chronic schizophrenia under almost continuous neuroleptic therapy for many years. The results were compared with CNV parameters of a control group. On the basis of the results obtained, the authors advance the view that the different modes of manifestation of cerebral bioelectric reactivity (CNV) are independent of treatment and are related to the different stages of the evolution of the disorder.

A correlation of parameteres of evoked activity in psychopathic personalities of an explosive type and in control groups, detected certain differences in the dynamics of separate parameters of evoked potentials in a changed informativeness of the stimula. The physiological interpretation of these data indicates that in psychopathic personalities on the background of increased orientating reactions with prevalence of a general alert condition there is a decreased evaluations of the signal according to its significance. An evaluation of their actions and consideration of the past experience in such patients is also decreased. These disorders are more distinctly expressed in a complicated situation.
In performance of two sensorimotor tasks (the reaction time and stimulus recognition), different scalp topography of human early and late CNV components was revealed. The topography appears to reflect the dominant structure of intracerebral relationships determined by a performed task.
CNV was studied from the Ukhtomsky dominant theory standpoint in subjects performing four different types of tasks. The CNV appears to have a complicated spatial-temporal organization and can be satisfactorily described with the aid of four relatively independent components differing from each other in their location, time of development and sensitivity to varying of monitored variables.
A longitudinal investigation of the evoked potential to a warning stimulus, and of the CNV, was conducted with reactive depressives and controls under incentive and nonincentive conditions in a long interstimulus interval paradigm. A smaller group of endogenous depressives were recorded once. The application of multivariate analysis, which controlled for experimental and session effects, indicated that the CNV, as a multiple-component potential, is not capable of distinguishing reactive depressives from controls. Significant univariate interactions involving late CNV area and peak latency were obtained, possibly indexing psychomotor retardation. Analysis of the evoked potential did reveal significant group differences which were explained in terms of main and interaction effects in the P240 and interaction effects involving N120. The findings suggested that groups differed in their responsiveness to experimental demands, and modified their responses differently over time. Mann-Whitney U analysis of endogenous depressives produced no group differences in the CNV measures, but did for N120 amplitude.
The present experiment was designed to examine the effects of the numbers of letter and word upon CNV components, by using a modified Sternberg's paradigm. The results indicated that CNV amplitude decreased and CNV rising time increased as a function of the numbers of letter and word. CNV resolution time increased with the number of word, while no increase in resolution time was observed with the number of letter. These findings were discussed in relation to recent information processing models.

The advice most compatible with the experimental literature reviewed is to suggest that the performer's attention be directed toward response preparation, the level of which varies inversely with simple RT magnitude. Directing the individual's attention elsewhere, such as enforcing a sensory set via instructions or encouraging the performer to focus attention upon the details of response execution, serves to reduce response preparation degree, thereby prolonging RT and masking any facilitation effect which can be demonstrated when proper attentional instructions are given.
