It was proved that the soil of recreational areas can be potential source of human geohelminthiosis. The eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichocephalus trichiurus as well as of Toxocara canis were found on the beaches of Poznań lakes.
The purpose of the study was the characteristic of physico-chemical and bacteriological features of water quality in three swimming pools of standard type accepted for most pools in the country, and it was tried to assess their sanitary-hygienic state in relation to the accepted sanitary standards. The study was carried out in the years 1991-1992 taking water samples from each pool twice in a month during water removal, and once in the whole study during pool filling. The physico-chemical and bacteriological studies were carried out by the methods evolved at the National Institute of Hygiene, and the results were compared with the obligatory standards. It was found that physico-chemical parameters of water quality different only slightly between the tested pools. Most evident differences were observed in chloride concentrations. It was noted that falling free chlorine concentration in a pool was associated with increasing bacterial contamination of water. The degree of bacterial contamination of water in that pool was above the permissible value in 18% of the studied samples. The obtained results point out water quality depends, in the first place, on correct performing of disinfection, which was not always adequate in these pools.
Studied were a total of 52 samples of forage mixtures prior to and after pelleting from three forage plants in this country, in terms of total bacterial count and the relative share of coli bacteria and Salmonellae. Two experiments were layed out under productional conditions for peletting a forage mixture at 92-94 degrees C being contaminated with Salmonella bacteria at the rate of 10(3) and 10(2) per gram of mixture. Results showed that pelleting processes reduce both the total bacterial count and the coli and Salmonella counts, the microbial cells being in an anabiotic status. It is suggested to adopt forage pelleting as a method to render harmless Salmonella-contaminated forages provided the count of Salmonella organisms does not exceed 10(2) per gram of forage. Pelleting should be carried out at 92-94 degrees C. This is to be routinely practised until the problem of forage decontamination is solved by other means.

The following investigations show the frequency of the occurrence of Salmonella in biowastes. Salmonellae, belonging to the serotypes Salmonella enteritidis, infantis and agona were detected in 50% of the investigated biowaste samples. In order to control the reliability of compositing techniques on eliminating pathogens, Salmonella enteritidis was used as a pathogen indicator, which was brought into a container composting process and investigated on it's decline. Although the input indicator bacteria were eliminated in every case latest until the end of container composting, Salmonella was detected in 36% of the investigated fresh compost samples. Every time when Salmonella was detected in input material, the same serotypes were to be found in seepage water and survived there until the end of intensive rot. In laboratory experiments the maximum survival time of Salmonella enteritidis in seepage water at +5 degrees C was 42 days. Seepage water was found out to be a reservoir for survival of Salmonellae and has to be considered as a permanent source of contamination. In the question of the disposal of seepage water there are disagreements between the instructions of TA Siedlungsabfall and TA Luft.
Spontaneous bioelectric activity of the brain was studied by means of EEG monitoring with toposelective EEG mapping in 45 patients with otitis media purulenta chronica before and after ear surgery. A correlation was found between the presentation of slow rhythms and the initial stage of otogenic intracranial complications in the examinees. This is an additional criterium for establishment of early diagnosis of local pachymeningitis.

The purpose is to assess the impact of compliance with measures of hygiene and water supply and oral rehydration on the diarrhoea with under 5 years of age in four villages of southern Côte d'Ivoire. The method used is to compare morbidity and mortality of children, firstly between two groups of villages without such measures, secondly in two villages before and after implementing them. Initially, an exhaustive survey has determined the incidence rate of diarrhoea, the proportion of deaths resulting from such diarrhoea as well as the mortality rate 1988. Two similar survey were made in 1990 and 1992. The results show a 50% reduction of the incidence rate of diarrhoea and a 85% reduction of the proportion of deaths related to diarrhoea in the villages with intervention. The mortality rate to diarrhoea was likewise reduced by 85%. These results show the importance of the improvement and accessibility to drinkable water and hygiene in the prevention of diarrhoea in areas children.
