UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to evaluate working conditions according to hygiene norms and to determine health impairments of drug distribution companies' workers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study was performed in summer of 2003 in drug distribution companies implementing good distribution practice. Study included 588 workers. Health impairments for technical personnel and pharmacists were revealed using a questionnaire. RESULTS: Microclimatic work conditions: temperature, humidity, air movement during summer season at 11% workplaces did not correspond to hygiene norms. The main health impairments for pharmacists were various ophthalmological disorders. For technical personnel main health impairments were musculoskeletal disorders, as back pain and varicosis. They are related with repetitive spinal column movements, incorrect weight lifting, long-fixed working position, etc. Based on criteria used for evaluation of workload, workers of drug distribution companies are attributable to strained work category.

The paper presents hygienically substantiated ways of regulating the reconstruction and concentration of houses and plots near them in particular, which makes it possible to preserve the minimum required set of functional zones of the near-house territories, to improve the environmental situation, microclimatic and noisy conditions, and the population's living conditions when urban lands are intensively used.

INTRODUCTION: A prospective approach to save energy expenditure for a liquid cooling garment (LCG) system is to provide intermittent regional cooling (IRC) to the human body instead of continuous cooling. In order to gain insight into IRC mechanisms, a mathematical model was developed to simulate thermal interaction between the human and IRC. METHODS: Human thermoregulatory responses were simulated by a previously validated six-cylinder mathematical model. Two equations were derived from the energy balance principle to estimate LCG heat removal during ON (coolant circulation) and OFF (no coolant circulation) periods. The heat removal equations were incorporated into the boundary equations of the human model. The augmented model was used to predict human thermal responses under different IRC conditions. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The model was evaluated against experimental results with IRC in warm environments. The comparison demonstrated that the model predictions of the core temperature and mean skin temperature were reliable within root mean square deviations of +/- 0.10 degrees C and 0.44 degrees C, respectively. Simulation analysis showed that IRC has the potential to reduce power requirements. Modeling is an effective alternative to predict efficacy when actual responses cannot be attempted. A systematic approach, consisting of manikin measurements, physiological experiments, and mathematical modeling can expedite the research and development of LCG systems.

In order to establish priorities in health-improving programs the researchers analyzed the hygienic situation at Novolipetsk metallurgical complex and ranked its technological divisions according to labor conditions of 73 basic professions and state of health of the workers engaged to agglomeration works (AW), chemical-recovery works (CRW), plate rolling (PR) and the workers of a blast-furnace shop (BFS) and an oxygen-converter shop (OCS-I and OSC-II).

The whole of trading enterprises with many average/big saling-centres forms what is today commonly known as Large Organized Distribution (LOD). The main risks regarding the people working in the LOD are: MM, repetitive motion of upper limbs, fixed postures, unfavourable microclimatic conditions and, moreover, the probability of labour accidents. In order to analyse the risks due to MM and false postures, we have used the ergonomic software "Classic Jack" distributed by EAI-UGS, which has been very helpful to find out the most dangerous labour operations (e.g. charging and discharging of goods, fragmentation and reassembling of manufactures, goods-shelving, branding and labelling). We have, then, suggested a programme of health surveillance that includes a medical examination, eventual x-ray exams, specialized examination and a posturologic visit. This posturologic visit has got an olistic diagnostics approach, whose research after the causes that could be responsible for the checked diseases concerns not only the damaged area, but also other parts of the body (ocular system, auditive system, podalic system, masticatory apparatus).
