The temporary dentitions of 18 to 39-week-old lambs with a very light or a very heavy parasite burden are compared. The heavily parasitised lambs developed longer temporary incisors which tended to protrude further forward in relation to the upper dental pad. They showed absolute hypocalcaemia and hypoalbuminaemia and relative hypophosphataemia and hypoproteinaemia and in the alveolar bone of the mandible there was a reduction in ash and matrix densities and matrix mineralisation. The incisor protrusion and lengthening may have been a consequence of the loss of supporting bone, but inappetance was likely to have been a factor contributing to the lengthening.

This study reports the management of infants with chronic diarrhoea by colostrum feeding. Eight children with chronic diarrhoea, ranging from 9 months to 3 years of age and all from low socio-economic families, formed the basis of this study. They were undernourished and marasmic. Stool examination showed enteropathogenic E. coli in all eight cases, Ascaris lambricoidis in four, and Giardia lamblia in one. Patients with chronic diarrhoea, in whom no cause was found were excluded from this study. All eight patients were administered 20 ml fresh human colostrum daily for 7 days. In addition, those patients, who had giardiasis, received metronidazole treatment, while cases with ascariasis were given antihelminthic therapy irrespective of the groups they belonged to. Our results indicated effective antidiarrhoea action of colostrum in some patients with chronic diarrhoea of infective origin.

Parasitic nematodes are constantly exposed to the immune effector mechanisms of their hosts. One strategy of the worms to cope with these defence reactions is the secretion of modulatory proteins that down-regulate cell-mediated immune responses. We analysed the proliferation of mesenteric lymph node cells of mice infected with Heligmosomoides polygyrus and showed that cellular proliferation was strongly suppressed in the chronic phase of infection. To identify proteins of H. polygyrus that are involved in parasite-induced immunomodulation, worm extract and culture supernatant of adult H. polygyrus were fractionated by gel chromatography and activity of each fraction was determined. One of the fractions (fraction 9) of worm extract as well as worm secretory products inhibited the antigen-specific cellular proliferation by about 40%. This reduced cellular reactivity coincided with a down-regulation of inducible nitric oxide production of mouse macrophages by 57%. Furthermore, fraction 9 contained antigens that were recognized by IgE antibodies of H. polygyrus-infected mice and induced degranulation of an IgE-sensitized basophil cell line. Single proteins of fraction 9 were analysed by mass spectrometry. These data suggest that antigens that are recognised by IgE antibodies might play an important role in immunomodulation exerted by nematode infections.

A study was designed to compare the effectiveness and time efficiency of three collection-preservation methods individually and grouped to form systems. Employees and members of their families of an agricultural grower in Hillsborough County, Fla., provided all fecal specimens used in the study. The 160 individuals participating were members of 64 families and represented a cross section of all job activity levels including management. Specimens were collected in Merthiolate/iodine/Formalin, Formalin (10% neutral buffered solution), and polyvinyl alcohol fixative. Parasites were found in the specimens from 39 (24.4%) of the 160 individuals participating, which represented 29.7% of the 64 families. No single method was effective in recovering all of the parasites found. When the methods were grouped to form diagnostic systems, the Merthiolate/iodine/Formalin system appeared to be more effective for parasite recovery as well as more time efficient than the Formalin/polyvinyl alcohol fixation system.
The ability of the FeKal CON-Trate system (Trend Scientific, Minneapolis, Minn.) to recover parasite ova, cysts, or larvae from 300 fecal specimens was compared with that of the Formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation technique. One hundred stool samples had previously been determined to contain 129 parasite forms. The FeKal system detected 127 parasites (sensitivity, 98.4%), and the Formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation technique detected 125 parasites (sensitivity, 96.9%). Higher counts of parasite forms were obtained for 11 of 14 species of parasites in specimens prepared by the FeKal system. Four specimens were negative by the Formalin-ethyl acetate method and two by the FeKal system. These false-negative observations occurred in specimens with low counts of parasites. There were no false-positive results.
Of 12,321 stool samples analyzed over a 6-year interval, 870 (7.1%) were positive for a total of 1,019 parasites, of which 1,011 (99.2%) were found in trichrome-stained smears of unconcentrated specimens while only 479 (47.0%) were detected in iodine-stained smears of concentrated samples. Stool specimens were next analyzed by trichrome staining of both unconcentrated and concentrated specimens preserved in either mercury-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or cupric PVA. Of 2,198 specimens, 171 (7.8%) were positive for a total of 208 parasites, 192 (92.3%) and 204 (98.1%) of which were found in the unconcentrated and concentrated specimens, respectively (P < 0.05). In our patient population, examination of a single trichrome-stained smear of a concentrated stool specimen is a cost-effective alternative to routinely analyzing both concentrated and unconcentrated specimens for parasites.

Fecal specimens collected from 456 school children in Gombak, Malaysia, revealed an overall prevalence rate of 62.9%. The most common parasite found was Trichuris trichiura (47.1%) followed by Giardia intestinalis (14.7%), Entamoeba coli (11.4%), Entamoeba histolytica (9.9%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (7.9%). Infection rates were high among the Indonesian immigrant workers' children (90%) followed by the Orang Asli (79.5%), Malay (59.4%) and Indians (36.4%). Females (66.3%) had a higher prevalence rate than the males (58.5%). The prevalence of infection was found to be associated with the socio-economic status, water supply, sanitary disposal of feces and family size. Albendazole administered as a single dose (400 mg) was found to be effective against Ascaris (100%) and hookworm (92.3%) but was not effective against Trichuris (39.2%).
