Assessing productivity of foodservice systems in nutrition programs for the elderly.
A pilot study was conducted to develop a monitoring instrument for the measurement of productivity in nutrition programs for the elderly. Observations of foodservice activities were collected for 3 days in each of three senior centers utilizing cook/serve production models. Direct work activity categories included processing, service, transportation, clerical, cleaning, and receiving. Delay activities included personal delay and idle time. Information was gathered on the number of meals served. A method to recognize the equivalent work of senior citizen volunteers was developed. Productivity ratios were calculated as average labor minutes in each activity per meal served. Labor time was consistent within centers, and productivity varied with number of meals served. Average productivity ranged from 12.95 to 19.30 labor minutes per meal.
Case-control study of female hormones and eye melanoma.
In a case-control study, we compared 238 women with intraocular malignant melanoma to 223 matched controls with detached retinas to evaluate the influence of hormonal factors on the risk of this cancer. We observed increased risk among women who had ever been pregnant (relative risk, 1.4; 95% confidence interval, 0.8, 2.2) and women who used replacement estrogens (relative risk, 2.0; 95% confidence interval, 1.2, 3.1), decreased risk among women who had undergone oophorectomy (relative risk, 0.6; 95% confidence interval, 0.4, 1.0), and no change in risk among women who had used oral contraceptives. Compared to hormonal effects on risk of reproductive tumors, these effects were weaker and less consistent, suggesting that hormonal factors may play only a limited role in causing melanomas of the eye.

Syngamiasis in juvenile American robins (Turdus migratorius), with a note on the prevalence of other fecal parasites.
Of 105 juvenile American robins (Turdus migratorius L.) examined for fecal parasites, 77.1% were infected with one or more species of endoparasite. Syngamus sp. was the most commonly encountered parasite, found in 57.1% of the birds. There was a significant association between the presence of Syngamus sp. eggs in feces and signs of respiratory-tract disease. A single oral dose of fenbendazole (100 mg/kg of body weight) eliminated Syngamus sp. infection from all of 18 birds treated, yet 10 of 16 untreated controls apparently were "self-cured" over the 12-day period of observation.
