Is quality of life different for men with erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer compared to men with erectile dysfunction due to other causes? Results from the ExCEED data base.

PURPOSE: To our knowledge the relationship between the underlying etiology of erectile dysfunction and its impact on health related quality of life has not been studied. Such a study is important for men with prostate cancer, as the potential negative quality of life impact of erectile dysfunction may affect clinical decision making in newly diagnosed disease. We compare health related quality of life in impotent men with prostate cancer to that of impotent men without prostate cancer using the Exploratory and Comprehensive Evaluation of Erectile Dysfunction (ExCEED, TAP Pharmaceutical Products, Inc., Lake Forest, Illinois) data base, which is a multicenter, observational disease registry of men with erectile dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cohort included 168 men in ExCEED who had baseline health related quality of life measurement. Of these men 47 reported a history of prostate cancer while 121 did not. Appropriate univariate and multivariate analyses were performed comparing health related quality of life outcomes between impotent men with and without prostate cancer. RESULTS: Men with erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer had worse sexual self-efficacy, erectile function, intercourse satisfaction and orgasmic function than those with erectile dysfunction without prostate cancer (all p <0.001). However, men with erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer experienced less psychological impact of erectile dysfunction on sexual experience (p = 0.05) and emotional life (p = 0.03) than those with erectile dysfunction without prostate cancer. The findings regarding the psychological impact of erectile dysfunction persisted in multivariate linear regression models. CONCLUSIONS: Men with erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer appear to have better disease specific health related quality of life than those with erectile dysfunction and no history of prostate cancer. This finding has important ramifications for clinicians when counseling patients newly diagnosed with prostate cancer and also when treating patients who present with erectile dysfunction of various etiologies.

Biota--sediment accumulation factors for polychlorinated biphenyls, dibenzo-p-dioxins, and dibenzofurans in southern Lake Michigan lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush).

A set of high-quality, age-specific biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) have been determined from concentrations measured with high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry, by use of the 13C isotopic dilution technique, in lake trout and surficial (0-2 cm) sediment samples from southern Lake Michigan. BSAFs ranged from <0.1 to 18 for PCBs and from <0.001 to 0.32 for PCDDs and PCDFs detected in the fish. PCBs with zero or one chlorine in an ortho position had smaller BSAFs than other PCBs. PCDDs and PCDFs with chlorines at the 2,3,7,8-positions had larger BSAFs than most other PCDDs and PCDFs. The fidelity of the relative bioaccumulation potential data between independent lake trout samples, within and among age classes, suggests that differences in slight rates of net metabolism in the food chain are important and contribute to the apparent differences in BSAFs, not only for PCDDs and PCDFs but also possibly for some PCBs. A complicating factor for non-ortho- and mono-ortho-PCBs is the uncertain contribution of enhanced affinity for black carbon (and possibly volatility) acting in concert with metabolism to reduce measured BSAFs for lake trout. On the basis of the association between chemicals with apparent slight rates of metabolism and measured dioxin-like toxicity, several PCDFs with similar measured BSAFs but unknown toxicity may be candidates for toxicity testing.

Application of four watershed acidification models to Batchawana Watershed, Canada.

Four watershed acidification models (TMWAM, ETD, ILWAS, and RAINS) are reviewed and a comparison of model performance is presented for a common watershed. The models have been used to simulate the dynamics of water quantity and quality at Batchawana Watershed, Canada, a sub-basin of the Turkey Lakes Watershed. The computed results are compared with observed data for a four-year period (Jan. 1981-Dec. 1984). The models exhibit a significant range in the ability to simulate the daily, monthly and seasonal changes present in the observed data. Monthly watershed outflows and lake chemistry predictions are compared to observed data. pH and ANC are the only two chemical parameters common to all four models. Coefficient of efficiency (E), linear (r) and rank (R) correlation coefficients, and regression slope (s) are used to compare the goodness of fit of the simulated with the observed data. The ILWAS, TMWAM and RAINS models performed very well in predicting the monthly flows, with values of r and R of approximately 0.98. The ETD model also showed strong correlations with linear (r) and rank (R) correlation coefficients of 0.896 and 0.892, respectively. The results of the analyses showed that TMWAM provided the best simulation of pH (E=0.264, r=0.648), which is slightly better than ETD (E=0.240, r=0.549), and much better than ILWAS (E=-2.965, r=0.293), and RAINS (E=-4.004, r=0.473). ETD was found to be superior in predicting ANC (E=0.608, r=0.781) as compared to TMWAM (E=0.340, r=0.598), ILWAS (E=0.275, r=0.442), and RAINS (E=-1.048, r=0.356). The TMWAM model adequately simulated SO4 over the four-year period (E=0.423, r=0.682) but the ETD (E=-0.904, r=0.274), ILWAS (E=-4.314, r=0.488), and RAINS (E=-6.479, r=0.126) models all performed poorer than the benchmark model (mean observed value).

Estimation of methanotroph abundance in a freshwater lake sediment.

The numbers of methane-oxidizing bacteria (methanotrophs) in the sediments of Lake Washington were estimated using three culture-independent methods. Quantitative slot-blot hybridizations were performed with type I and type II methanotroph-specific probes. These data were compared to data from quantitative hybridizations using a pmoA-specific probe and a eubacterial probe. From the combined hybridization data, the methanotroph population in Lake Washington was estimated to be 3.6 x 10(8)-7.4 x 10(8) cells/g dry weight. Methanotroph community structure and number were also investigated using polar lipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Analysis of biomarker PLFAs characteristic of both type I (16:1 omega 8) and type II (18:1 omega 8) methanotrophs was used to estimate the abundance of these bacteria in Lake Washington sediments. From the PLFA data, the methanotroph population in Lake Washington was estimated to be 7.1 x 10(8)-9.4 x 10(9) cells/g dry weight. As a third method of quantitation, we calculated the methanotroph population using the total methane oxidation rate for whole cells in Lake Washington sediment to be 1.3 x 10(8)-1.2 x 10(9) cells/g dry weight. The three independent estimates of the number of methanotrophs in Lake Washington sediment agree within a two- to fourfold range. These data suggest that the three techniques used in this study detect the functionally significant population of methanotrophs in Lake Washington. Furthermore, these techniques will be useful for obtaining estimates of methanotroph abundance in additional environments.

Changes in primary productivity associated with liming and reacidification of an Adirondack lake.

The addition of calcium carbonate to a clearwater acidic lake had a significant effect on phytoplankton abundance and on the biomass-specific rate of production. Chlorophyll concentrations and productivity: biomass ratios were strongly correlated with changes in lake acidity associated with liming and reacidification (r2=0.89 and 0.73, respectively). Summer mean chlorophyll increased by 0.9 mg m(-3) for each unit increase in lake pH, whereas productivity:biomass ratios decreased from > 2 to < 1 with an increase in pH from 5.5 to 7.0. Higher phytoplankton standing crops after liming were attributed to lower grazing rates following the decline of the dominant zooplankton taxa. A model relating biomass-specific productivity to incident light levels was found to be useful in interpreting treatment effects on productivity. Incident light and biomass (based on chlorophyll) accounted for 81% of the variability in productivity at the treated site. Comparisons of photosynthesis-irradiance curves indicated that the maximum photosynthetic capacity was higher following the watershed liming, compared to data collected after lake liming and during reacidification.

Toxaphene congeners in the Canadian Great Lakes basin: temporal and spatial food web dynamics.

Samples of a top predator fish species, lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and predominant forage species including smelt (Osmerus mordax), alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus), deepwater sculpin (Myoxocephalus quadricornis) and lake herring (Coregonus artedii) were, collected from throughout 4 of the 5 Great Lakes (Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario) (Fig. 1). Lake trout were also collected from three isolated lake systems (Lakes Nipigon, Simcoe and Opeongo), all located within the basin. All the samples were analysed for body burdens of total toxaphene and 22 toxaphene congeners. In addition, from each of the Great Lakes sites samples of major invertebrate dietary items, which included Mysis relicta, Diporeia hoyi and plankton, were similarly analysed. Whole lake trout samples, archived at -80 degrees C, were reanalysed to determine historical trends of toxaphene congeners plus carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures. The Lake Superior food web consistently had the highest levels of total toxaphene of all the Great Lakes monitored. The primary source of toxaphene to Lake Superior has been identified as atmospheric transport and deposition from sites in the southern US, Mexico and Central America (Hoff, R.M., Strachan, W.M.J., Sweet, C.W., Chan, C.H., Shackelton, M., Bidleman, T.F., Brice, K.A., Burnison, D.A., Cussion, S., Gatz, D.F., Harlin, K., Schroeder, W.H., 1996. Atmospheric deposition of toxic chemicals to the Great Lakes: A review of data through 1994. Atmospheric Environ. 30, 3505-3527). Of the offsystem lakes surveyed. Lake Nipigon, situated due north of Lake Superior and with a Lake Basin area of about 6% of Lake Superior (Hendendorf, C.E., 1982. J. Great Lakes Res. 8(3), 379-412) had total toxaphene levels in lake trout equivalent to about 50% of those found in lake trout from Lake Superior. Temporal trend toxaphene congener analysis was conducted on archived whole fish samples collected over the period 1980 through to the 1990's. Initially a nonachlorobornane congener (Parlar #50) was predominant, with congeners #40, #62 and #21 being the next most prominent in the 1980 samples. Samples from the 1990's showed a significant decline in the presence of lower chlorinated congeners #40 and #21. Analysis of total toxaphene in food webs, indicated elevated levels in lower trophic level species such as Diporeia and Cottus sp. which have a benthic association. The stable isotope temporal trend 13C signature identified a significant shift in the lake trout diet over the period 1993 to 1996.

Nearly identical 16S rRNA sequences recovered from lakes in North America and Europe indicate the existence of clades of globally distributed freshwater bacteria.

We compared bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences recovered from Lake Loosdrecht, the Netherlands, to reported sequences from lakes in Alaska and New York State. In each of the three lake systems, which differ in pH and trophic state, some sequence types were found without related sequences (sequence identity < 90%) in the data sets from the other two systems. Two sequences in the Actinomycetes and Verrucomicrobia radiations were more closely related to sequences from the New York lakes data set than to any other sequence in the global databases. However, the most striking similarities were found in the subdivisions alpha and beta of the Proteobacteria. In these subdivisions three different clusters of highly related bacteria were identified (97-100% sequence identity) that were represented in all three lake regions. The clusters contained no members other than freshwater bacteria. One cluster falls within a monophyletic aquatic supergroup that apparently diverged early in evolution into an exclusive freshwater cluster and an exclusive marine cluster, the so-called SAR11 cluster. The detection of these three bacterial clades in lakes distinguished by geographic distance as well as physical and chemical diversity suggests that these organisms are dispersed globally and that they possess unique functional capabilities enabling successful competition in a wide range of freshwater environments.

Effects of acidic lake water on the eye.

The normal eyes of 6 men and 21 rabbits were exposed to samples of lake water, one eye to a sample of pH 4.6 and the other to a sample of pH 6.3. The men's eyes were exposed for 5 minutes on four occasions a week apart, whereas the rabbits' eyes were exposed for 15 minutes either on one occasion or once a day for 7 days. In the humans neither sample of water produced symptoms or signs of an adverse effect on the external eye tissues, apart from brief conjunctival congestion after every exposure. In the rabbits the two samples did not appear, in general, to have different effects on the ocular tissues, as judged from the osmolarity and cell count of the tears, conjunctival congestion, corneal staining with fluorescein, corneal permeability and histologic features of the cornea. In a few instances differences were observed, but their pathological significance was not apparent. These data suggest that lake water of a pH as low as 4.6 may not harm healthy eyes, however, larger and broader studies are essential.

The influence of total organic carbon (TOC) on the relationship between acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) and fish status in Norwegian lakes.

Acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) is the parameter most commonly used as chemical indicator for fish response to acidification. Empirical relationships between fish status of surface waters and ANC have been documented earlier. ANC is commonly calculated as the difference between base cations ([BC]=[Ca2+]+[Mg2+]+[N+]+[K+]) and strong acid anions ([SAA]=[SO4(2)-]+[NO3-]+[Cl-]). This is a very robust calculation of ANC, because none of the parameters incorporated are affected by the partial pressure of CO2, in contrast to the remaining major ions in waters, pH ([H+]), aluminum ([Aln+]), alkalinity ([HCO3-/CO3(2)-]) and organic anions ([An-]). Here we propose a modified ANC calculation where the permanent anionic charge of the organic acids is assumed as a part of the strong acid anions. In many humic lakes, the weak organic acids are the predominant pH-buffering system. Because a significant amount of the weak organic acids have pK-values<3.0-3.5, these relatively strong acids will permanently be deprotonated in almost all natural waters (i.e. pH>4.5). This means that they will be permanently present as anions, equal to the strong acid inorganic anions, SO4(2)-, NO3- and Cl-. In the literature, natural organic acids are often described as triprotic acids with a low pK1 value. Assuming a triprotic model, we suggest to add 1/3 of the organic acid charge density to the strong acid anions in the ANC calculation. The suggested organic acid adjusted ANC (ANC(OAA)), is then calculated as follows: ANC(OAA)=[BC]-([SAA]+1/3CD*TOC) where TOC is total organic carbon (mg C L(-1)), and CD=10.2 is charge density of the organic matter (microeq/mg C), based on literature data from Swedish lakes. ANC(OAA) gives significant lower values of ANC in order to achieve equal fish status compared with the traditional ANC calculation. Using ANC(OAA) the humic conditions in lakes are better taken into account. This may also help explain observations of higher ANC needed to have reproducing fish populations in lakes with higher TOC concentrations.

Positional behavior of the white uakari (Cacajao calvus calvus).

The positional behavior and habitat use of a group of white uakaries (Cacajao calvus calvus) was observed for 6 weeks in the dry season at Lake Teiú, Brazil. Data are presented for feeding, traveling, and resting activities. The most common feeding posture is sit, followed by stand. Cacajao frequently exhibits locomotor behaviors while in feeding trees, using pronograde clamber and quadrupedal walk. The most frequently used locomotor behaviors in travel are quadrupedal walk, leap, and pronograde clamber. Quadrupedal run and drop also figure importantly in the behavioral repertoire. The most frequent resting posture was sit, followed by ventral lie. Compared to representative members of the other pitheciin genera, Pithecia and Chiropotes, Cacajao engages in more locomotion while feeding, and uses more pedal suspension. While traveling, pronograde clamber and drop are more frequently used by Cacajao. Multiple, deformable supports are used more by Cacajao than by the other pitheciins throughout all activities. Overall, the positional behavior of Cacajao is more similar to that of Chiropotes than of Pithecia. Cacajao's behavioral solutions to the problems of balance imposed by its greatly reduced tail are discussed.

Towards a model of acidification effects on waterfowl in Eastern Canada.

Data from 212 lakes in central Ontario were used to examine the relationship between presence of breeding waterfowl and loons and the following lake characteristics: pH, presence of fish, lake area, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total phosphorus (TP) concentration. In univariate analyses, the two fish-eating species preferred large, high pH lakes with fish, while insectivorous species showed little consistent pattern of lake association. Logistic regression analyses confirmed that large lake size and presence of fish were important determinants of presence of piscivores, though the residual effect of pH differed between the two species. Broods of three of the four insectivorous species avoided lakes with fish, and independently showed a positive response to pH. By calculating the probability that fish will be present on a lake of given area and pH, it is possible to estimate the net effect of pH change on these waterfowl. Relationships such as those presented here can, with some assumptions, be linked to models of lake acidification to estimate response of waterfowl to predicted changes in acidic deposition.

On the sedimentary occurrence of chlorophyllone a.

The 13(2),17(3)-cyclopheophorbide a enol (CPP) is shown to convert mainly to a approximately 1:1 mixture of (13(2)R/S) chlorophyllones a (Chlone), when chromatographed over silica gel or alumina supports. 15(1)-hydroxychlorophyllonelactone a and some other chlorophyll a related compounds are also tentatively identified as minor transformation products of CPP. This raises the possibility that the chlorophyllones reported in recent sediments may be analytical artifacts from CPP. However, data for the surface sediments from Lake Motte as well as literature data for other contemporary sediments show that, (i) they are not artifacts, (ii) considering that CPP is the intermediate compound in the formation of chlorophyllones from chlorophyll a, the hydroxylation of CPP in the sedimentary environment involves an enzymatic process leading preferentially to 13(2)S chlorophyllone a.

Biotransformation and bioconcentration of pyrene in Daphnia magna.

Water fleas (Daphnia magna) were exposed to [14C]pyrene in the presence and absence of piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a general cytochrome P450 (CYP) inhibitor, in organic carbon-free artificial freshwater (AFW, DOC<0.2 mg l(-1)) and in natural lake water (DOC=19.9 mg l(-1)) for 24 h. The bioconcentration of total radioactivity after 24 h exposure was 50% lower in the natural lake water, indicating decreased bioavailability of pyrene by the dissolved organic matter. However, the proportions of parent compound were only ca. 12 and 19% of the total body burden in daphnids exposed in AFW and natural lake water, respectively. Therefore, the tissue concentration of the parent pyrene was not significantly different in the daphnids exposed in the two different waters. Due to extensive biotransformation the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of parent pyrene was only 16 and 23% of the BCF calculated on the basis of total radioactivity in the daphnids in AFW and natural lake water, respectively. The proportion of parent pyrene was significantly higher (over 60%) in the daphnids exposed simultaneously to PBO, which indicates the involvement of CYP monooxygenases in the biotransformation. Furthermore, increasing PBO concentration decreased the accumulation of total radioactivity in AFW but not in the natural lake water. The data demonstrate capability and importance of CYP monooxygenases in biotransformation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in D. magna.

Thermal regime database of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant cooler--Lake Drŭksiai.

The hydrothermal regime of the Lake Drŭksiai has changed when it became a cooler for the Ignalina NPP. For 18 years, 1981-1998, the hydrologists from Lithuanian Energy Institute have been investigating thermal state of the lake. The water temperature data owned by the laboratory is unique as it has been collected sequentially during 18 yr under wide range of different weather and INPP capacity conditions. Gathered information consists of lake surface temperature, related meteorological data and INPP operating capacity data. This information enables not only to state that the relationship between hydrological and meteorological/INPP capacity data exists (that is already known) but also to analyze its character. The aim of this study was to build computer database for data analysis and management as well as to create digital maps for further modelling and forecasting. ArcView software package was used for data set management and visualization.

Transduction of a freshwater microbial community by a new Pseudomonas aeruginosa generalized transducing phage, UT1.

A pseudolysogenic, generalized transducing bacteriophage, UT1, isolated from a natural freshwater habitat, is capable of mediating the transfer of both chromosomal and plasmid DNA between strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Several chromosomal alleles from three different P. aeruginosa strains were found to transduce at frequencies from 10(-8) to 10(-10) transductants per PFU at multiplicities of infection (MOI) between 0.1 and 1. Transduction frequencies of certain alleles increased up to 1000-fold as MOIs were decreased to 0.01. UT1 is also capable of transducing plasmid DNA to indigenous populations of microorganisms in natural lake-water environments. Data obtained in this study suggest that environmentally endemic bacteriophages such as UT1 are formidable transducers of naturally occurring microbial communities. It should be possible to develop model systems to test transduction in freshwater environments using components derived exclusively from these environments.

65,000 years of vegetation change in central australia and the australian summer monsoon

Carbon isotopes in fossil emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) eggshell from Lake Eyre, South Australia, demonstrate that the relative abundance of C4 grasses varied substantially during the past 65,000 years. Currently, C4 grasses are more abundant in regions that are increasingly affected by warm-season precipitation. Thus, an expansion of C4 grasses likely reflects an increase in the relative effectiveness of the Australian summer monsoon, which controls summer precipitation over Lake Eyre. The data imply that the Australian monsoon was most effective between 45,000 and 65,000 years ago, least effective during the Last Glacial Maximum, and moderately effective during the Holocene.

Acute effects of PM10 pollution on pulmonary function of smokers with mild to moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

This study assessed the association between respirable particulate air pollution (PM10) and changes in the pulmonary function (FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and FVC) of smokers with mild to moderate airflow limitation. Spirometric data of Salt Lake City participants in The Lung Health Study were used from two screening visits 10 to 90 days apart after an initial screening visit, which included spirometry. We analyzed differences in pulmonary function (delta FEV1, delta FEV1/FVC, and delta FVC) for participants between the two spirometry visits. Significant associations between changes in pulmonary function and PM10 were observed. delta FEV1 and delta FEV1/FVC were inversely associated with changes in PM10. Although these associations were small, explaining only about 2 to 3% of the variance in delta FEV1, they were consistently negative and statistically significant (p < or = 0.01). On average, an increase in PM10 equal to 100 micrograms/m3 was associated with a marginal decline in FEV1 equal to approximately 2%. Associations between delta FVC and PM10 were consistently negative, but they were not statistically significant. No consistent or statistically significant associations between delta FEV1, delta FEV1/FVC, or delta FVC with changes in daily temperatures were observed. The effect of PM10 was greater for men than for women. The effect was nearly the same for those with nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), based on methacholine inhalation challenge testing, versus those without AHR. We conclude that in current smokers PM10 possibly has a small transient negative effect on lung function that is not entirely obscured by their smoking habit.
