Medical students are from Mars--business and psychology students are from Venus--- University teachers are from Pluto?
This study explores further the reasons given by the first year medical students in comparison with first year business and first year psychology students for their selection of lectures, student role play, and student presentations as their least preferred teaching method. The reasons were originally given in a questionnaire exploring student expectations of university teaching completed by 195 medical, 128 business and 72 psychology students in their first week at university (Sander et al, 2000). The analysis reported here suggests that whilst students irrespective of course gave similar reasons for not liking lectures, there were subtle differences between medical students and business and psychology students in the reasons they gave for not liking student role play and student presentations. These differences suggest that many first year medical students can be suspicious of the value of student centred learning methods. Teachers hoping to use these methods should acknowledge student suspicion and work to help students see the value of these techniques to encourage their full participation.
A night with Venus: partner assessments and high-risk sexual encounters.
This study examined partner assessments and high-risk sexual encounters among STD clinic patients. Participants were 42 English-speaking attendees of a public STD clinic in Southern California with ages ranging between 18 and 60. Twelve focus groups were conducted. Qualitative data from the focus groups were analyzed using grounded theory. The analysis resulted in delineating five temporally-ordered stages of causal sexual encounters. Participants reported that they did not use condoms when they perceived new sexual partners as being safe. Instead of directly addressing their partner's sexual history, they relied heavily on both visual and verbal cues to judge if their partner was clean, or disease-free. This assessment process reflects an error in judgement, particularly because most of the participants had already contracted a STD. Suggestions are provided for incorporating the information about the partner assessment process into AIDS educational programmes.

Discussing STIs: doctors are from Mars, patients from Venus.
BACKGROUND: Primary care plays an important role in promoting sexual health, but in this setting counselling regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is rarely performed and often inadequate. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to identify and quantify the barriers physicians encounter in discussing STIs with their patients. METHODS: A postal questionnaire-based survey was carried out in a random sample of 200 primary care physicians in Antwerp, Belgium. RESULTS: The response rate was 68%. Among the 122 respondents, only 44.3% provide some form of counselling (asking about sexual history, informing about safe sex or informing about STIs) regularly, at least once a week. Major barriers are language and comprehension problems (for 74.2% of respondents), ethnic differences (68.4%), insufficient training (69.4%), lack of time (60.8%), presence of the patient's partner (89.2%) or mother (94.2%), first contact with a patient (60.8%), fear of embarrassing the patient (30.6%) and a patient without genital complaints (71.4%). About half of the GPs fail to counsel an asymptomatic patient with obvious STI risk, and as many give no safe sex advice in a first contraception consultation. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians have many and various barriers to discussing STIs with their patients. Features of contemporary STI counselling and solutions to its problems are discussed. Education of health care providers should be given priority.

Quantification of insect nitrogen utilization by the venus fly trap Dionaea muscipula catching prey with highly variable isotope signatures.
Dionaea is a highly specialized carnivorous plant species with a unique mechanism for insect capture. The leaf is converted into an osmotically driven trap that closes when an insect triggers sensory trichomes. This study investigates the significance of insect capture for growth of Dionaea at different successional stages after a fire, under conditions where the prey is highly variable in its isotope signature. The contribution of insect-derived nitrogen (N) was estimated using the natural abundance of 15N. In contrast to previous 15N studies on carnivorous plants, the problem emerges that delta15N values of prey insects ranged between -4.47 per thousand (grasshoppers) and +7.21 per thousand (ants), a range that exceeds the delta15N values of non carnivorous reference plants (-4.2 per thousand) and soils (+3 per thousand). Thus, the isotope-mixing model used by Shearer and Kohl to estimate the amount of insect-derived N is not applicable. In a novel approach, the relationships of delta15N values of different organs with delta15N of trapping leaves were used to estimate N partitioning within the plant. It is estimated that soon after fire approximately 75% of the nitrogen is obtained from insects, regardless of plant size or developmental stage. The estimates are verified by calculating the average isotope signatures of insects from an isotope mass balance and comparing this with the average measured delta15N values of insects. It appears that for Dionaea to survive and reach the flowering stage, seedlings must first reach the 6th-leaf rosette stage, in which trap surface area nearly doubles and facilitates the capture of large insects. Large amounts of nitrogen thus made available to plants may facilitate an enhanced growth rate and the progressive production of additional large traps. Dionaea reaches a maximum abundance after fire when growth of the competing vegetation is suppressed. About 10 years after fire, when grasses and shrubs recover, Dionaea becomes overtopped by other species. This would not only reduce carbon assimilation but also the probability of catching larger prey. The amount of insect-derived nitrogen decreases to 46%, and Dionaea becomes increasingly dependent on N-supply from the soil. Competition for both light and N may cause the near disappearance of Dionaea in older stages of the fire succession.
A randomized, controlled trial for risk factor reduction in patients with symptomatic vascular disease: the multidisciplinary Vascular Prevention by Nurses Study (VENUS).
BACKGROUND: Patients with manifest vascular disease are at high risk of a new vascular event or death. Modification of classical risk factors is often not successful. We determined whether the extra care of a nurse practitioner could be beneficial to the cardiovascular risk profile of high-risk patients. DESIGN: We conducted a randomized, controlled trial based on the Zelen design. METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-six patients with manifestations of a vascular disease and who had two or more modifiable vascular risk factors were pre-randomized to receive treatment by a nurse practitioner plus usual care or usual care alone. After 1 year, risk factors were remeasured. The primary endpoint was achievement of treatment goals for blood pressure, lipid, glucose and homocysteine levels, body mass index, and smoking. RESULTS: Of the pre-randomized patients, 95 of 119 (80%) in the intervention group and 80 of 117 (68%) in the control group participated in the study. After a mean follow-up of 14 months, the patients in the intervention group achieved significantly more treatment goals than did the patients in the control group (systolic blood pressure 63 versus 37%, total cholesterol 79 versus 61%, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol 88 versus 67%, and body mass index 38 versus 24%). Medication use was increased in both groups and no differences were found in patients' quality of life (SF-36) at follow-up. CONCLUSION: Treatment delivered by nurse practitioners, in addition to a vascular risk factor screening and prevention program, resulted in a better management of vascular risk factors than usual care alone in vascular patients after 1-year follow-up.

Digestive Secretion of Dionaea muscipula (Venus's Flytrap).
The digestive fluid of Dionaea muscipula has been studied with respect to its protein content as a function of time after entrapment of protein material and some enzymes of the secretion. Maximum secretion of enzyme occurs within the first 3 days of the digestive cycle and protein reaches its maximum at 4 days. Phosphatase, proteinase, nuclease and amylase have been observed in the secretion. The enzymes have acid pH optima and the proteinase has a molecular weight of about 40,000.
The Role of ATP in Mechanically Stimulated Rapid Closure of the Venus's Flytrap.
When the midribs of untreated traps of Dionaea muscipula are frozen in liquid nitrogen after rapid closure, they contain significantly less ATP than those frozen before closure. Exogenous ATP causes a significant increase in the rate of mechanically stimulated trap closure. Illuminated traps close faster than those kept in the dark. The traps of plants placed in 100% O(2) close much faster than do air controls, while 100% CO(2) inhibits closure. It is concluded that ATP is probably the native source of potential energy for contraction of the trap's midrib, and that if the endogenous ATP titer is increased by oxidative phosphorylation or an exogenous source, the trap will close faster.
