Improvements in routine xenodiagnosis with first instar Dipetalogaster maximus (Uhler 1894) (Triatominae).

First instar Dipetalogaster maximus proved as effective as third instar Triatoma infestans in detecting circulating Trypanosoma cruzi in patients with chronic infections examined in a routine xenodiagnostic laboratory. Since rearing costs are diminished, D. maximus has now replaced T. infestans as the xenodiagnostic agent in our laboratory. However, further work is needed to define the optimal conditions necessary when using this species in xenodiagnosis.

[Triatomines (Reduviidae: Triatominae) in a Chagas disease focus in Talaigua Nuevo (Bolívar, Colombia)].

INTRODUCTION: The epidemiological importance and ecological characteristics of triatomines were investigated in a Chagas disease focus in Talaigua Nuevo, Bolivar Province. OBJECTIVE: To describe and correlate the ecological characteristics of triatomines in a Chagas disease focus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Triatomines were collected in 300 domiciles located in the urban zone of Talaigua Nuevo. This included inspection of microhabitats in and around the domestic environment, and also wine palms, woodpiles and firewood. RESULTS: Among the 103 triatomines collected, four species were identified--Triatoma maculata, Eratyrus cuspidatus, Panstrongylus geniculatus, and Rhodnius prolixus. T. maculata was the most abundant species (92.23%). The majority (93%) were collected in the intradomiciliary environment. CONCLUSION: Individuals of T. maculata naturally infected with Trypanosoma were recorded for the first time in Bolivar Province. The distribution range of P. geniculatus and R. prolixus was expanded. Using a multiple correspondence analysis, no relationship was discerned between the house type and occurrence of triatomines.

Localization of rDNA sites in holocentric chromosomes of three species of triatomines (Heteroptera, Triatominae).

Chromatin organization in the holocentric chromosomes of three triatomines species was cytologically studied by fluorescent in situ hybridization with a 45S rDNA probe of Drosophila melanogaster to localize ribosomal genes. In Triatoma tibiamaculata, metaphases I showed telomeric highlights in a single, larger bivalent. In T. protacta, hybridization was detected in one of the telomeres of an autosomal chromosome. In T. platensis, there were highlights in a single, smaller chromosome (X chromosome). The results obtained did not agree with the expected localization of rDNA genes in the sex chromosomes of triatomines, as demonstrated by silver impregnation, and suggest that the chromosome reorganization that occurred in this group during evolution may be a more important mechanism involved in rDNA distribution.

[Biochemistry of the evolutive cycle of Triatoma infestans. IX. Composition of cuticular hydrocarbons compared to other Triatominae].

The hydrocarbon composition of epicuticular lipids of different species of Triatomini were determined and compared by gas-liquid chromatography. T. infestans, T. delpontei, T. rubrovaria, T. sordida, T. guasayana and T. vitticeps from infestans subgroup and T. pallidipennis from rubrofasciata, were studied. All these species had in common the same kind of hydrocarbons. The major components were n C29; n C31; 12+14+15+18 methyl C38; 15, 19+14, 18 dimethyl C39; 12+14+17+19 methyl C36 and 4 methyl C34. However, the relative proportions of selective hydrocarbons were significantly different among the species studied. These differences may be used with a chemotaxonomic criterion. Either the gas-liquid chromatographic curve of the cuticular hydrocarbons or the ratio of selective hydrocarbons may be used as fingerprints of the species considered.

[Method of biological control of Triatominae, vectors of Chagas disease, using entomopathogenic Hyphomycetes. Preliminary study].

Bioassays determined the pathogenic activity of 14 strains of 5 entomopathogenic hyphomycetous species (Fungi imperfecti), Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria brongniartii, Metarhizium anisopliae, Nomuraea rileyi and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus to Rhodnius prolixus. Treatments consisted of direct spraying with conidial titrated suspensions on first instar larvae. When tested at 3 X 10(5) conidia/cm2, only 2 strains, B. bassiana n. 297 and B. bassiana n. 326 killed 100% of larvae at 10 days post-exposure. In the same time their LD50 and their LD90 did not differ significantly. After 3 weeks, the mortality caused by either dose of spores of B. bassiana n. 297 was very high. In contrast, in the case of B. bassiana n. 326 mortality due to reduced doses remained at low rates. This laboratory study demonstrated that the isolate, B. bassiana n. 297 might have potential as microbial control agent against the assassin bugs.
