Unreliability of self-reported burning tendency and tanning ability.

Burning and tanning histories were studied in 790 white students 18 to 30 years of age by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Only 325 cases (41.1%) were classifiable according to the Fitzpatrick scheme (skin types I to IV). Skin type I (always burn, never tan) was recorded only twice (0.3%). The minimal erythemal dose was measured in a subgroup of 197 students; these results showed no significant correlation with the self-reported burning tendency. In 508 students the burning-tanning histories were compared with eye and hair color, freckling tendency, and number of moles. The tanning ability showed a better correlation with skin complexion characteristics than the burning tendency. It is concluded that self-reported burning-tanning histories form an unreliable means of skin typing.

Microsatellite genotyping of DNA isolated from claws left on tanned carnivore hides.

Tanned hides, a common form of preservation of mammalian specimens, are usually resistant to DNA analysis. However, we show that DNA isolated from the pulp of claws of tanned hides amplifies well for microsatellite markers. For eight wolverine and eight lynx hides tanned 5-20 years ago, 93-98% of replicate amplifications gave distinct PCR products. Genotypes obtained in analysis of tissue samples of the same individuals were in all cases in agreement with those obtained by analysis of claws. We thus conclude that the use of claws from tanned hides offers new possibilities to genetic studies of preserved mammalian specimens, for instance, in the monitoring of illegal trade.

Cancer incidence and specific occupational exposures in the Swedish leather tanning industry: a cohort based case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect on the incidence of cancer of exposure to chemicals handled in the leather tanning industry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-control study was performed within a cohort of 2487 workers employed for at least six months during the period 1900-89 in three Swedish leather tanneries. 68 cancer cases (lung, stomach, bladder, kidney, nasal, and pancreatic cancers and soft tissue sarcomas) and 178 matched controls were studied. Effects of chemical exposures on cancer incidence, adjusted for age at risk, sex, and plant were estimated with a conditional logistic regression model. RESULTS: A significant association was found between exposure to leather dust and pancreatic cancer (odds ratio (OR) 7.19, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.44 to 35-89). An association was indicated between leather dust from vegetable tanning and lung cancer. After adjustment for smoking habits a tentative association between organic solvents and lung cancer lost its significance. No association was found between exposure to chlorophenols and soft tissue sarcomas. CONCLUSIONS: The significant association between leather tanning and soft tissue sarcomas that was found in our previous cohort analysis could not be explained by exposure to chlorophenols. On the other hand a significant association was found between exposure to leather dust and pancreatic cancer, and exposure to leather dust from vegetable tanning was often present in cases with lung cancer. Due to the small numbers of cases, the results can, however, only lead to tentative conclusions.

[The use of jugular veins as carotid artery substitutes in dogs: a comparison between cryopreservation techniques and the tanning process of vein preservation (author's transl)].

Improved surgical techniques and an aging population have allowed surgeons the opportunity to implant vascular prostheses in patients where the run-off bed is somewhat compromised. We have considered the possibility of homograft venous preservation either by tanning or cryopreservation and now report our preliminary experience in the canine model jugular veins of large mongrel dogs were excised and treated in one of two manners. These veins were preserved for either seven or thirty days and inserted as functional segments in the carotid vessels: each dog received a tanned vein on one side and one which has been cryopreserved on the other side, as either an autograft or allograft. After three months the twenty one dogs were sacrified and the grafts recovered and examined for patency and histology. There appeared to be no difference in patency between the autograft and the allograft groups but there were striking differences in patency between the tanned grafts (8/21) and the cryopreserved grafts (19/21). Tanned grafts showed a fibrous hyperplasia at the anastomotic suture line that seemed to be the causative factor for graft thrombosis. Cryopreserved grafts showed sclerotic degeneration in the midportion of the graft: it was found to be more pronounced in the 30 day preservation specimens. The relatively good results, regarding patency, in the cryopreserved group has sparked our interest to investigate further into this process.

Efficacy of acitretin and commercial tanning bed therapy for psoriasis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of acitretin and commercial tanning bed therapy for the treatment of moderate to severe chronic plaque-type psoriasis. DESIGN: Retrospective medical record review and telephone survey of subjects and prospective open-label trial. SETTING: University dermatology clinic. PATIENTS: The study population comprised 26 subjects in the retrospective study and 17 subjects in the prospective study, all with moderate to severe plaque-type psoriasis. INTERVENTION: Twelve weeks of daily oral acitretin (25 mg) therapy and commercial tanning bed UV exposure (mean UV-B output of 4.7%) for 4 to 5 days per week. RESULTS: In the retrospective review, 19 (83%) of 23 subjects had clearance or near clearance, 2 (9%) of 23 had moderate improvement, and 2 (9%) of 23 had no improvement. Patients reported a high degree of satisfaction with the treatment. In the prospective trial, the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) and National Psoriasis Foundation scores decreased an average of 78.6% and 79.0% from baseline, respectively. A reduction from baseline in the PASI score of 50% and 75% (PASI 50 and PASI 75) was achieved by 13 (76%) and 10 (59%) patients, respectively. Adverse events were generally mild to moderate. CONCLUSIONS: Acitretin use in combination with commercial tanning bed therapy appears to be effective and useful for psoriasis in areas without access to physician-directed phototherapy. The variability of tanning salon light and quality mandates caution when using this therapy.

Effects of UV photographs, photoaging information, and use of sunless tanning lotion on sun protection behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the efficacy of UV photographs and information about photoaging (eg, wrinkles and age spots) for increasing the sun protection intentions and behaviors of young adults and to determine whether any effects of this appearance-based intervention could be enhanced by providing a non-UV alternative for achieving a tan (ie, sunless tanning lotion). DESIGN: Randomized control trial with 1-month follow-up. SETTING: Two universities in Southern California. PARTICIPANTS: A volunteer sample of 146 college students, 91.1% of whom completed the "surprise" 1-month follow-up. INTERVENTION: A UV facial photograph and a brief videotape describing the causes and consequences of photoaging. The study tested the effects of the photoaging information/UV photographic intervention only, the intervention plus use of sunless tanning lotion, and a control condition. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Participants sun protection intentions as assessed immediately after the intervention and sun protection behaviors during the month after the intervention as assessed during a surprise telephone follow-up. RESULTS: The intervention resulted in significantly stronger sun protection intentions (P<.001) and greater sun protection behaviors (P<.05) relative to controls. Furthermore, the group that also used sunless tanning lotion tended to engage in greater sun protection behaviors than the group that received the intervention alone (P<.08). CONCLUSION: The UV photographic intervention holds promise as a cost-effective approach to motivate practices that may ultimately result in health benefits (ie, reduced skin cancer rates).

UV light tanning as a type of substance-related disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the complex motivations involved with UV light (UVL) tanning behavior. DESIGN: Two written instruments, the CAGE (Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, Eye-opener) Questionnaire, used to screen for alcohol abuse or dependence, and the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) criteria for substance-related disorders, were modified to evaluate subjects for a substance-related disorder involving UVL tanning. SETTING: Galveston Island beach. Subjects A total of 145 beach-goers. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Positive findings from the 2 evaluation instruments. RESULTS: Of the 145 subjects, 38 (26%) met the modified CAGE criteria, and 77 (53%) met the modified DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for a substance-related disorder with regard to UVL and related sun tanning. The results from both instruments were significantly associated (P = .03). CONCLUSIONS: Individuals who chronically and repetitively expose themselves to UVL to tan may have a novel type of UVL substance-related disorder.

The mutation causing the black-and-tan pigmentation phenotype of Mangalitza pigs maps to the porcine ASIP locus but does not affect its coding sequence.

The gene for agouti signaling protein (ASIP) is centrally involved in the expression of coat color traits in animals. The Mangalitza pig breed is characterized by a black-and-tan phenotype with black dorsal pigmentation and yellow or white ventral pigmentation. We investigated a Mangalitza x Piétrain cross and observed a coat color segregation pattern in the F2 generation that can be explained by virtue of two alleles at the MC1R locus and two alleles at the ASIP locus. Complete linkage of the black-and-tan phenotype to microsatellite alleles at the ASIP locus on SSC 17q21 was observed. Corroborated by the knowledge of similar mouse coat color mutants, it seems therefore conceivable that the black-and-tan pigmentation of Mangalitza pigs is caused by an ASIP allele a(t), which is recessive to the wild-type allele A. Toward positional cloning of the a(t) mutation, a 200-kb genomic BAC/PAC contig of this chromosomal region has been constructed and subsequently sequenced. Full-length ASIP cDNAs obtained by RACE differed in their 5' untranslated regions, whereas they shared a common open reading frame. Comparative sequencing of all ASIP exons and ASIP cDNAs between Mangalitza and Piétrain pigs did not reveal any differences associated with the coat color phenotype. Relative qRT-PCR analyses showed different dorsoventral skin expression intensities of the five ASIP transcripts in black-and-tan Mangalitza. The a(t) mutation is therefore probably a regulatory ASIP mutation that alters its dorsoventral expression pattern.

A novel glutamate agonist, TAN-950 A, isolated from streptomycetes.

A novel antifungal amino acid antibiotic, TAN-950 A ([S]-2-amino-3-(2,5-dihydro-5-oxo-4-isoxazolyl)propanoic acid), was found to have affinity for three excitatory amino acid (EAA) receptors and to inhibit [3H]alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid ([3H]AMPA), [3H]kainate and [3H]3-(2-carboxypiperazin-4-yl)propyl-1-phosphonic acid ([3H]CPP) binding competitively. It caused excitation of rat hippocampal CA1 neurons in vitro, an effect that was antagonized by an AMPA/kainate antagonist, 6,7-dinitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (DNQX). Chemical modification of TAN-950 A brought about a large change in its pharmacological activity. Alkylation at the C-3 position of the isoxazolone ring markedly increased the ability to elicite neuronal firing. This agonistic effect was also antagonized by DNQX. The (R) enantiomer of TAN-950 A had increased selectivity for the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subtype. This selectivity was further enhanced by removal of the methylene group from the amino acid moiety. The most potent NMDA agonistic activity was observed with [R]-2-amino-2-(2,5-dihydro-3-methyl-5-oxo-4-isoxazolyl)acetic acid. These derivatives of TAN-950 A might be useful agents for investigating the pharmacological and physiological roles of EAA receptors.

Effect of traditional Chinese herbal medicines on the pharmacokinetics of western drugs in Sprague-Dawley rats of different ages (II): Aminophylline-huan shao tan and aminophylline-pu chung yi chi tang.

The effect of Chinese herbal medicines (Huan Shao Tan and Pu Chung Yi Chi Tang) and western drugs (sodium phenobarbital and cimetidine) on the serum concentration and pharmacokinetic parameters of theophylline and cytochrome P-450 of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats of three different ages were examined. The older rats without pretreatment with Chinese herbal medicines and western drugs exhibited higher serum theophylline concentration and lower pharmacokinetic parameters of theophylline than middle-aged and younger rats (P < 0.05), but there was no difference in cytochrome P-450 activity among the three different ages of rats. All rats when pretreated with sodium phenobarbital showed lower serum theophylline concentration and higher pharmacokinetics parameters of theophylline. Also, the activity of cytochrome P-450 was higher (P < 0.05). When cimetidine was pre-administered in SD rats of three age groups, all rats exhibited lower serum theophylline concentration and higher pharmacokinetics parameters (P < 0.05), but the activity of cytochrome P-450 remained unchanged (P > 0.05). The results were opposite to other studies, probably because the dose and dosing intervals were different. No single effect occurred on the younger and middle-aged rats after pretreatment with Huan Shao Tan and Pu Chung Yi Chi Tang: their serum theophylline concentration, pharmacokinetics parameters and cytochrome P-450 activity were the same as the control group. However, the older rats after pretreatment with Huan Shao Tan or Pu Chung Yi Chi Tang showed lower serum theophylline concentration and higher pharmacokinetics parameters than the younger and middle-aged rats pretreated with similar Chinese herbal medicines. This indicates that Huan Shao Tan and Pu Chung Yi Chi Tang may perhaps improve the elimination of theophylline in older rats. This might be attributed to the increase in hepatic blood flow or in liver volume, since the activity of cytochrome P-450 was not affected by the administration of Chinese herbal medicines.

Indoor tanning: risks, benefits, and future trends.

The indoor tanning industry is a $1 billion-a-year business in the United States, and use of these high-intensity UVA tanning devices continues to grow. Many members of the medical community are concerned about the safety of these largely unregulated devices, but tanning salon operators state such concerns are unfounded and unproved. A comprehensive review of current knowledge of the operation and effects of indoor tanning is presented. The effects of UV radiation (especially UVA) on experimental animals and human beings are examined. Both acute and chronic effects are delineated from experimental sources as well as from epidemiologic studies and clinical observations. Existing safety regulations are described. Information on operator knowledge and compliance with existing safety regulations is reviewed.

Beta-alanine and tanning polymorphisms.

1. Beta-alanine is found in mycelial walls of mature tan, but not immature white, stage of Morchella esulenta, nor in any stage of a permanently white mutant. 2. Beta-alanine is also found in hydrolysed water-extracts of human hair, the concentration being higher in blond than in dark brown, and in pigmented than in unpigmented hair. 3. Beta-alanine, added to tyrosinase-oxidized tyrosine, dopa, or dopamine has only a slight yellowing influence on the final black pigment; but when the amino group of tyrosine is combined with leucine, added beta-alanine produces stable tan pigments. 4. With L-alanine substituted for beta-alanine in this reaction, green pigment results. 5. Gelatin filters stained with the tan pigment allow solar heating of underlaying water more quickly than do those stained with the black pigment. Unstained filters allow such heating even more quickly. 6. Beta-alanine enhances production of tan pigment when heated with the phospholipid, lecithin. Implications for pigmentary adaptation, and formation of lipofuscin-like age pigments are discussed.

Comparing two methods of measuring legislation compliance among indoor tanning facilities.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of compliance by tanning facilities to indoor tanning legislation is important. OBJECTIVE: This study compared a telephone-based measurement procedure with a face-to-face visit. METHODS: Indoor tanning facilities (N = 115) in San Diego County, California, were contacted by two adolescents posing as prospective customers using each method. Two compliance variables were assessed: number of times one can tan during 1 week and written parental consent for minors. RESULTS: Facility compliance with the frequency variable by face-to-face and telephone was 25.5% and 17.5%, respectively. These rates for the parental consent variable were 73.3% and 80.8%, respectively. Percent agreement between data collection methods was 71.3% for compliance with the frequency recommendation and 76.3% for parental consent regulation. Although traditional statistical tests indicated poor concordance, an alternative test indicated good concordance. LIMITATIONS: Levels of concordance for the confederates differed. CONCLUSION: Telephone assessment of compliance is fairly comparable with the more labor-intensive, face-to-face assessment.

Transient abnormal neurologic signs (TANS) in a longitudinal study of very low birth weight preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: In the Bonn Longitudinal Study (BLS), the course of neurologic development was analysed with regard to transient abnormal neurologic signs (TANS). Abnormal neurologic signs (ANS) are defined when present in at least one developmental area at one examination. From birth to adulthood (mean 23 years) 108 preterm infants, 81% of very low birth weight (VLBW) were examined with regard to their psychological, neurologic and physical development: 62 appropriate for gestational age (AGA), 46 small for gestational age (SGA), 27 with postnatal catch-up growth of head circumference (group A) and 19 without catch-up (group B); 73 full terms served as controls. The dropout rate was 7.6%. RESULTS: ANS showed a great inter- and intraindividual variability. Episodes of neurologic abnormalities changed with those of normality. ANS reappeared when new abilities developed. ANS were observed mainly during the first year. The incidence was higher in preterms (AGA 49%, SGA A 63%, SGA B 61%) than in full terms (15%). Transient ANS (TANS) were diagnosed in 42% of AGA, 63% of SGA A, 33% of SGA B preterms and 12% of full terms. The recovery rate, i.e., the TANS to ANS percentage, was higher in AGA (86%), SGA A (100%) and full terms (82%) than in SGA B (55%) preterms. CONCLUSION: It is impossible to predict early on whether ANS will be transient, i.e. TANS. Longitudinal analyses are needed. The outcome depends on recovery from or persistence in ANS.

Tanning habits and sunburn in a Swedish population age 13-50 years.

As part of a skin cancer control programme, we studied the occurrence of self-reported outdoor tanning, sunbed use and ultraviolet (UV)-induced erythema in an urban area. A cross-sectional questionnaire study of 6000 adolescents aged 13-19 years, and 4000 adults aged 20-50 years was applied. Non-response was analysed for outdoor tanning and sunbed use. Results, in general, did not differ between responders and non-responders. Females aged 17-29 years tanned outdoors most frequently. Sunbed use and related erythema was twice as common in young females. In males, outdoor tanning was not age-related. In the past 12 months, 55% reported sunburn and/or burn from sunbed use, one-third were burned in Sweden, one-quarter on sunny resorts abroad. Sunburn occurs frequently. Compliance with recommendations for sunbed use is poor, especially among adolescents and young adults. To reduce the occurrence of erythema, the influence of risk settings upon behaviours is a critical issue for exploration.

Inhibition of UVR-induced tanning and immunosuppression by topical applications of vitamins C and E to the skin of hairless (hr/hr) mice.

Exposure of C3HBYB/Wq hairless (hr/hr) mice to ultra-violet radiation (UVR) for 15 days induced intense tanning of their dorsal skin. Small, dark freckles appeared first, gradually enlarging and coalescing as treatment progressed yielding a uniform tan. Histologically, the gross changes in skin color were matched initially by the appearance of scattered epidermal melanocytes that subsequently proliferated to form discrete, progressively expanding and abutting populations resulting in a uniform melanocyte network throughout the basal layer of the interfollicular epidermis. In contrast, when applied topically before each daily exposure to UVR, a cream or lotion vehicle containing both vitamins C and E (Vits C/E) inhibited UVR-induced erythema and tanning. Application of Vits C/E, both before and after irradiation, was no more effective in providing photoprotection than pre-treatment only. At the tissue level, UVR-induced proliferation and melanogenesis of melanocytes were reduced compared with irradiated controls. The density of individual melanocyte populations was reduced, as was the number of melanocyte populations achieving merger (confluence) with others. Confluence grades and cell counts, estimating the maximum density of melanocyte populations in UVR-Vits C/E-treated mice, were approximately two thirds those of UVR-vehicle-treated controls. However, tanning was only one fifth that of UVR-vehicle-treated controls, suggesting that melanogenesis was also inhibited. In addition to its inhibitory actions on irradiated melanocytes, Vits C/E also inhibited UVR-induced suppression of contact hypersensitivity (CHS) in haired (Hr/hr) and hr/hr mice of the C3HBYB/Wq strain. The common denominators for most, if not all, of the influences of topically-applied Vits C/E in muting the responses of the melanocyte and immune systems to UVR may stem from the vitamins' combined ability to suppress UVR-stimulated inflammation and its associated cascade of mediators.

Tanning salons in southwest Poland: a survey of safety standards and professional knowledge of the staff.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, sunbeds are very popular worldwide; however--in the majority of countries, including Poland--there are no general guidelines and/or regulations for sunbed usage. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate tanning salons in southwest Poland, paying special attention to safety regulations and basic professional knowledge of the staff members of these units. The hypothesis was put that tanning salons offer better skin and eye protection if their employees are more educated. METHODS: Fifty-five sunbed units were visited by the investigators, acting as potential clients. Information was obtained from the staff members in response to previously designed questionnaire. RESULTS: Employees of 41.8% of sunbed units had adequate knowledge of radiation used in their establishments. Goggles were provided in 72.7%, sunglasses in additional 25.5% of salons. Lotions with sunscreens were available in 41.8% of units. Brief medical history of the client was taken in 20% of units. No dermatological examination was performed. Tanning salons, where employed staff were well-orientated in ultraviolet radiation emitted in their units, significantly more frequently recommended usage of goggles and sunscreens (P = 0.0037 and P = 0.0033, respectively). Moreover, in these establishments sunscreens were more commonly available (P = 0.0029). CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge of staff members of tanning salons is poor and the eye and skin protection is not enough. The results point out the importance of the knowledge of the staff members in providing skin and eye protection.

Carcinogenic potential of fluorescent UV tanning sources can be estimated using the CIE erythema action spectrum.

In legislation the CIE human erythema action spectrum is used to assess the risk of UV radiation appliances for household use. The most popular type of UV radiation source for private use is the low pressure 'UVA' radiation source, which mainly emits in the UVA area, but also has some emission in the UVB area. Recently reports have raised doubt whether the CIE erythema action spectrum is a good approximation for the carcinogenic risk. Therefore, it was investigated whether the carcinogenic potential of differing UV tanning sources, which mainly emit in the UVA area, could be assessed by using the CIE erythema spectrum. Two groups of lightly pigmented C3H/Tif mice were initially exposed to broad spectrum UV radiation with a high output of UVB (UVB emission 16.7%) during 84 days, in a daily dose of 4.67 Basic minimal erythema doses (Basic-MED). Subsequently, one group was exposed to Bellarium-S SA-1-12 (UVB emission 6.9%), the other to Philips TL 09R (UVB emission 2.2%), in a daily dose of 1 Basic-MED. The time to occurrence of seven tumour end-points was almost identical in the two groups, p > 0.4. To obtain further information on the relationship between the daily dose of common UV tanning sources measured in Basic-MED and tumour development, we combined the result of this experiment with the results of two others. There existed a negative correlation between the daily exposure dose measured in Basic-MED and the tumour induction time, p < or = 0.05. This inverse relationship was observed both when the UV tanning sources were administered with or without a prior exposure to broad spectrum UV irradiation. Our results indicate that the carcinogenic risk of UV tanning sources in the hairless C3H/Tif mouse can be estimated by the CIE erythema action spectrum.
