[The Role Playing with recording for the undoing of the relational abilities].

The elective didactic activities, (the student choice) in the regulation nursing degree corse represent an inviting formative moment for the students, since they can choose on the didactic fan proposed, the offer that most like and capture one own learning process. The proposal of the Role Playing session, active didactic methodology for excellence, since it favours the learning taking advantage of ludic analogy power, has consented, in the elective activities a ambit, with a lot of favour by nurse students that have lived in the simulation some emblematic situations of the clinical daily. The students group has focused theme attention on some ordinary situations in the hospital context performed by actorsstudents and they are analysed psychological mechanism, particularly as far as concerned the communication and the approach nurse-patient-patient relative: the behaviour mistakes perceived by oneself and somebody else, are become elements for discussions and new information for to acquire relationship competences.

Role-playing for teaching ethics in emergency medicine.

Ethical issues are becoming increasingly complicated. As with all specialties, emergency medicine has ethical dilemmas unique to the field. We describe a method for teaching students to identify and analyze ethical issues in emergency medicine. The course is designed for clinical medical students and house officers and is structured around various situations in which the students role-play. The course requires about 20 to 30 hours and covers a variety of topics from consent to treatment and confidentiality to teaching and education in the emergency department.

The use of role-play and psychodrama in the education of the dental undergraduate.

The delivery of effective information flow through self learning, critical thinking and problem solving is one of the objectives of current curriculum development within the Dental Faculty of the University of Hong Kong. These objectives reflect a desire to encourage skills related to 'comprehension learning' and 'meaning orientation' rather than 'rote' learning and 'surface' approaches. This paper explains the way in which role-play and psychodrama are used in an effort to achieve these objectives.

Tritrichomonas foetus: the role played by iron during parasite interaction with epithelial cells.

The aim of this work was to investigate the role played by iron during interaction of Tritrichomonas foetus with cultured epithelial cells. We have observed that the growth rate of T. foetus is influenced by the amount of iron available into culture medium. When organisms maintained for 24h in iron-depleted medium were transferred to an iron-rich one, many protozoan cells exhibited a cytokinesis blockage. Parasites maintained in iron-depleted medium exhibited a significant increase in cytoadhesion when compared with both controls and parasites that had been cultured in medium in which iron was replaced. T. foetus collected from iron-depleted medium also exhibited a reduction in its ability to destroy epithelial cell monolayers and a reduction in the activity of several cysteine proteases. Taken together, the results presented here demonstrate that iron may be an extracellular signal, which seems to modulate the ability of T. foetus to interact with host epithelial cells.

Student nurses' use of their interpersonal skills within clinical role-plays.

Heron's six-category intervention analysis is a component of many counselling courses and is used extensively by teachers of interpersonal skills within nursing curricula. In addition, researchers have used six-category intervention analysis as a theoretical framework for exploring nurses' perceptions of their interpersonal skills. This study aimed to advance previous research by using Heron's framework to analyse student nurses' actual skills, as deployed in clinical role-plays, and then to compare them to earlier findings. Analysis of the data produced the following rank order of interventions based on Heron's framework: catalytic, prescriptive, supportive, informative, confronting and cathartic. The findings both challenge and support previous findings on nurses' perceptions of their interpersonal skills. The paper discusses these findings and their implications for clinical practice.

Baby Think It Over: using role-play to prevent teen pregnancy.

This study examined the effectiveness of Baby Think It Over (BTIO; Jurmaine, 1994), an infant simulation program that seeks to modify attitudes toward teen pregnancy and teen parenting. As in the study by Saltz, Perry, and Cabral (1994), the premise was that teens engage in unprotected sex because of a personal fable concerning pregnancy: "It can't happen to me." It was expected that participation in BTIO, a form of role-play, would encourage teens to acknowledge their own personal vulnerability to an unplanned pregnancy, and provide them with some insight into the experience of adolescent parenting. One hundred fourteen eleventh-grade students participated. After two to three days' experience with BTIO, teens in the intervention group were more likely to accurately assess their personal risk for an unplanned pregnancy than were teens in the comparison group. Qualitative analyses revealed that teens in the intervention group were significantly more likely to produce concrete examples of activities and consequences related to child-rearing than were teens in the comparison group. Findings of this study are discussed from the perspective of the health belief model (Rosenstock, 1974), and suggestions for further research with BTIO are made.

What influences social skills in patients with schizophrenia? Preliminary study using the role play test, WAIS-R and event-related potential.

Persons with schizophrenia exhibit disabilities which profoundly affect their social and independent living skills, and social skills training is expected to be an effective treatment for reducing the level of severity of disabilities. Many factors may influence usage and learning of social skills; little is definitively known regarding which disabilities related to schizophrenia compromise social skills. The present report deals with factors affecting social skills. Twenty persons with schizophrenia (DSM-III-R) were tested using a Japanese version of the role play test, the reliability and validity of which were verified. Subjects were also tested using BPRS, auditory event-related potential (ERP) and WAIS-R. Nonverbal skills showed significant positive correlation with the amplitude of the N1 ERP component and age of onset, and 59% of the variance of nonverbal skills was accounted for by these factors using multiple regression analysis. Nonverbal skills are at least partially based on either automatic discriminating processes or selective attention, reflected in N1A. Information receiving and processing skills showed significant positive correlation with Performance IQ and Global Assessment of Functioning, and 61% of the variance of receiving and processing skills was accounted for by BPRS score, PIQ score and age. These skills are not directly related to elementary cognitive function as assessed by analyzing, for example, the ERP P3 component, but are based on more complex neuropsychological function.

[Identity and dissociation in cyberspace. A case of dissociative identity disorder associated with internet role playing].

OBJECTIVE: By mediating dissociative experiences, the Internet can challenge the boundaries of people's sense of identity. To illustrate this hypothesis, a case of dissociative identity disorder (DID) is presented. CLINICAL PICTURE: A young unemployed woman created and frequently played several characters in an online game. For more than 2 years she spent up to 12 h a day in the Internet, assuming various personalities, which in return intruded upon her neglected real life. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: During the course of an inpatient psychotherapeutic treatment, the clinical diagnosis of DID was confirmed by psychometric testing. After 12 weeks of psychotherapy, the patient had managed to identify her fragmented identities as character traits and integrated them into her core personality. She rearranged her real everyday life, found a new job, and reduced her online activities. DISCUSSION: Even though the patient's psychopathology stems from a disposition in terms of a personality disorder with histrionic and narcissistic features, excessive internet role play obviously functioned as a trigger to develop DIS. Conclusively, cyberspace's anonymous interactivity may offer the possibility to explore one's identity while also putting at risk its coherence.

Evidence for a protective role played by the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger in cerebral ischemia induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion in male rats.

In the present paper, the role played by Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX) in focal cerebral ischemia was investigated. To this aim, permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) was performed in male rats. The effects on the infarct volume of some inhibitors, such as tyrosine-6 glycosylated form of the exchanger inhibitory peptide (GLU-XIP), benzamil derivative (CB-DMB) and diarylaminopropylamine derivative (bepridil), and of the NCX activator, FeCl3, were examined. FeCl3, CB-DMB, bepridil and GLU-XIP, a modified peptide synthesized in our laboratory in order to facilitate its entrance into the cells through the glucose transporter, were intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) infused. FeCl3 (10 microg/kg) was able to reduce the extension of brain infarct volume. This effect was counteracted by the concomitant icv administration of CB-DMB (120 microg/kg). All NCX inhibitors, GLU-XIP, CB-DMB and bepridil, caused a worsening of the brain infarct lesion. These results suggest that a stimulation of NCX activity may help neurons and glial cells that are not irreversibly damaged in the penumbral zone to survive, whereas its pharmacological blockade can compromise their survival.

The spouse situation inventory: a role-play measure of coping skills in women with alcoholic partners.

This article reports on the psychometric evaluation of the Spouse Situation Inventory (SSI), a role-play measure of coping skills in women with alcoholic partners. The study examined the generalizability, alternate form reliability, test-retest reliability, and construct validity of the measure in 472 women from both treatment and nontreatment populations. The SSI had acceptable generalizability and reliability. SSI performance also had predicted relationships with measures of general escape coping, alcohol-related coping behaviors, the woman's drinking, the partner's drinking in the treatment group, and the partner's problem recognition in the nontreatment group. The SSI shows promise as a reliable and valid measure of coping skills in this population and has direct implications for development and evaluation of skill training programs.

Local invasiveness of ameloblastoma. Role played by matrix metalloproteinases and proliferative activity.

AIMS: Ameloblastoma is an odontogenic neoplasm characterized by local invasiveness and recurrence. In this study we analysed the role played by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the local invasiveness of ameloblastoma. We also attempted to establish a relationship between the presence of MMPs and the proliferative activity of ameloblastoma cells. METHODS AND RESULTS: Immunohistochemistry was carried out to detect different MMPs in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of human ameloblastoma. Immunohistochemistry, however, does not establish whether a given MMP is latent or active. To address this point, we carried out biochemical methods, namely zymography and Western blotting. Our results showed expression of latent and active forms of MMPs 1, 2 and 9 in ameloblastoma. These enzymes may digest bone matrix and release mitogenic factors, which would increase tumour proliferation. This possibility prompted us to study the proliferation of ameloblastoma cells located in close proximity to bone. Silver-stained nucleolar organizer region morphometry revealed that ameloblastoma cells in the vicinity of bone show increased proliferation, when compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest an interdependent mechanism involving MMPs and proliferation of ameloblastoma cells, which may contribute to the local invasiveness of this tumour.

Investigating the role played by protein-lipid and protein-protein interactions in the membrane association of the p120GAP CaLB domain.

The GTPase activating protein, p120GAP, contains an amino acid sequence motif called the Ca2+-dependent lipid binding domain (CaLB) which mediates a protein-protein interaction between p120GAP and annexin VI and also binds to negatively charged phospholipids. Because membrane association of p120GAP is important for the regulation of p21 Ras activity, we have studied the roles played by Ca2+, phospholipids and annexin VI in the membrane association of p120GAP. Here we demonstrate that a truncated CaLB domain GST fusion protein (GSTGAP618-632), lacking the ability to bind to phospholipids, is able to bind to rat fibroblast membranes in a Ca2+- and concentration-dependent manner. In addition, this fusion protein also binds to annexin VI in an amino acid sequence specific but Ca2+ independent manner. Also, when bound to annexin VI in the presence of Ca2+, this fusion protein has the ability to co-bind to phosphatidylserine vesicles. Thus, annexin VI may simultaneously mediate an interaction with p120GAP and also an interaction with membrane phospholipids. This may in part explain the mechanism by which p120GAP associates with membranes in response to Ca2+ elevation and suggests the potential importance of annexin VI in the regulation of p21 Ras and the role CaLB domains may play in the specific recognition of cellular membranes.

Role played by a natural channel on the quality of bordering environment: a chemical assessment.

Based on a rational and simple chemical approach, a field-investigation aimed to assess the role played by a natural channel "lama" on the quality of underlying groundwater and neighbouring soils has been carried out. The results have demonstrated that: (a) the stream flowing through the "lama" is mainly made up of treated effluent from a nearby municipal wastewater treatment plant; (b) the occurrence of nitrates in the "lama" is due to rain-washing of nitrogen fertilized agricultural soils bordering on the "lama"; (c) hydraulic connections exist between the lama and the underlying groundwater causing contaminants flowing through the "lama" to reach groundwater within less than one week; (d) compared with the values measured in the "lama", the concentrations of TOC, N-NH4 and N-NO3 in groundwater result: lower, far lower and greater, respectively; (e) agricultural soils bordering on the "lama" result significantly contaminated by halogenated organics.
