[Determination of salicylic acid, resorcinol and chloramphenicol in junlieping tincture by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography].

A reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the quantitative determination of salicylic acid, resorcinol and chloramphenicol in Junlieping tincture. The operation was carried out on an ODS column with the mobile phase of a mixture of acetonitrile-methanol-water(25:10:65, volume proportion). The eluate was detected at 278 nm wavelength. This method is simple, fast and can be used for the quality control of Junlieping tincture.

Pnemostasis of injured lung in rabbits with gelatin-resorcinol formaldehyde-glutaraldehyde tissue adhesive.

Peripheral bronchopulmonary fistulas, or parenchymal air leaks, may occasionally be resistant to conventional suture or stapling techniques. In such instances, the tissue is poor and the associated morbidity of a persistent leak will be the greatest. We tested a previously described tissue adhesive compounded from gelatin resorcinol and polymerized at the time of application with a glutaraldehyde-formaldehyde mixture. We evaluated the ability of the adhesive to seal incisional air leaks acutely in the lungs of rabbits under conditions of positive intratracheal pressure and persistent ventilation. We also tested the efficacy of the glue at intervals after compounding to assess the shelf life of this nonproprietary formula. We established a technique for application of this adhesive and demonstrated its ability to decrease consistently the magnitude of air leaks, while generally providing complete pneumostasis in the presence of clinically relevant positive pressure ventilation. We conclude that this material can be prepared months in advance of its occasional use as an effective means of dealing with parenchymal air leaks encountered at operation.

[Resonance light scattering of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol (PAR)].

Mechanism and influence factors of resonance light scattering (RLS) spectra of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol (PAR) aqueous solution were studied. In weak acidic solutions, strong RLS of PAR can be observed. The spectral feature of RLS is related to the absorption spectra of PAR. Acidity of the solutions influenced the acid-base equilibrium of PAR and its existing state, thereby influenced the RLS intensity. At pH 3.1 to pH 6.2, PAR exists as neutral molecule, which may assemble into molecular aggregates by hydrophobic force giving a light scattering enhancement. By a light polarization experiment, the RLS of PAR was demonstrated to be complete polarized light. The relationship between RLS intensity and PAR concentration was examined to be linear at a given set of experimental conditions.

Aortic root necrosis after surgical treatment using gelatin-resorcinol-formaldehyde (GRF) glue in patients with acute type A aortic dissection.

BACKGROUND: Although gelatin-resorcinol-formaldehyde (GRF) glue is used for surgical repair of acute type A aortic dissections, late complications possibly ascribed to toxic effects of GRF glue have been reported. We analyzed the benefits and risks of using GRF glue. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 1990 and August 2003, 269 consecutive patients underwent emergency operations for acute type A aortic dissection. GRF glue was not used in 47 patients (non-GRF group) who were operated on until May 1995 and was used in the 222 (GRF group) who underwent operation subsequently. RESULTS: The rate of in-hospital mortality was significantly higher in the non-GRF group (31.9%) than in the GRF group (12.6%) (p<0.0001). In the GRF group, false aneurysms were found in 31 patients (31/194 survivors, 16.0%) 1-65 (mean, 30+/-18) months after initial operation. Reoperation was done in 24 of these patients. At reoperation, the site to which GRF glue was applied had degenerated, and the anastomosis between the aortic root and prosthesis had opened widely, creating a false aneurysm and resulting in aortic regurgitation with prolapse of the coronary cusps. The mortality rate of reoperation was 4.2% (1/24). CONCLUSION: The use of GRF glue improved the short-term outcome of surgery for acute type A aortic dissection, but was associated with a high incidence of false aneurysms forming at the site of proximal anastomosis, where GRF glue had been applied. Patients in whom GRF glue has been used should be carefully followed up after surgery.

[Use of the intra-alveolar GR (gelatin-resorcinol) dressing after tooth extraction in patients with hemorrhagic diathesis].

The suitability of an intra-alveolar gelatin-resorcinol dressing for controlling bleeding was tested in 118 tooth extractions on a total of 87 patients. Plain advantages of the dressing are: prompt haemostasis (which in most cases avoids hospitalization and substitution therapy), low cost, and easy application. The dressing is not always reliable in controlling bleeding after milk tooth extraction.

A critical study on the preparation and application of gelatin-resorcinol tissue adhesive crosslinked by formaldehyde.

A tissue adhesive composed of gelatin-resorcinol-formaldehyde was prepared. The factors, influencing its properties were discussed and compared with other preparation methods. Incised rat skin wounds were unified with adhesive applied between the wound edges or on the wound surface. Sutured skin wounds served as controls. After a week, the skin wounds with adhesive on their surface had a tensile strength twice as much as the sutured wounds. The granulation tissue was narrow, scarcely was inflammation reaction, no formaldehyde necrosis occurred.

Cereal grain resorcinolic lipids inhibit H2O2-induced peroxidation of biological membranes.

Cereal grain resorcinolic lipids (5-n-alk(en)ylresorcinols) at micromolar concentrations are able to protect the erythrocyte membrane against hydrogen peroxide-induced lipid oxidation. The antioxidative effect is dependent upon chain length of alkylresorcinol molecules. The C15:0 homolog (IC50 of 10 microM) exhibited strongest activity whereas for long chain homologs (C19:0 and C23:0) IC50 values were higher, 32.5 and 59 microM, respectively. The protective effect of alkylresorcinolic antioxidants was also dependent on their incorporation into the membrane, that is governed by their water-membrane partition coefficient. The results obtained show that alkylresorcinols should be recognized as hydrophobic, membrane-localised antioxidants.

Dynamic and static light scattering study on the sol-gel transition of resorcinol-formaldehyde aqueous solution.

Structure formation during the sol-gel transition of resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) solutions was traced by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and static light scattering (SLS) techniques. The decay time spectra obtained by DLS revealed that both the growth rates of colloidal particles formed during the early stage of the sol-gel transition and the time required for the colloidal particles to form a firm network structure could be related to the ratio of catalyst to water (C/W) of the starting RF solution. SLS results indicated that the molecular weight of colloidal particles increased with the progress of the sol-gel transition, the rate of which was also affected by the value of C/W. The mesoporosity of RF aerogels, which were prepared by drying RF hydrogels with supercritical carbon dioxide, was confirmed to depend on the size of colloidal particles estimated from the decay time spectrum collected at the last stage of the sol-gel transition.

Separation of vanadium, niobium and tantalum as ternary mixed-ligand complexes by capillary electrophoresis using chelation with 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol and tartaric acid.

Vanadium(V), niobium(V) and tantalum(V) were separated as ternary mixed-ligand complexes by capillary electrophoresis using 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) as the color chelating reagent. Four carboxylic acids such as tartaric acid (Tart), oxalic acid, citric acid and acetic acid were investigated as the additional ligand. The first was chosen as the best. Other parameters such as the concentration ratio of Tart to PAR, buffer concentration, injection time and applied voltage were also optimized. Under the optimized conditions, a complete separation of the three metal complexes was accomplished within 10 min. A linear calibration curve in the range of two orders of magnitude was obtained.

Improved spectrophotometric determination of uranium(VI) with 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol in the presence of benzyldimethylstearyltrimethylammonium chloride.

An improved spectrophotometric determination of uranium(VI) is proposed using 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol(PAR) in the presence of benzyldimethylstearyltrimethylammonium chloride(BSTAC) as a cationic surfactant. The calibration graph is linear in the range of 0.3-60 microg/10 ml uranium(VI), measuring the absorbance at 550 nm. The reproducibility for 19.0 microg/10 ml uranium(VI) is 0.57%. The third-derivative method using the third-derivative distance (d(3)A/dlambda(3)) among lambda(1) 530 nm, lambda(3) 594 nm and lambda(2) 565 nm was also investigated.

Derivative spectrophotometry in the determination of metal ions with 4-(pyridyl-2-azo)resorcinol (PAR).

Derivative spectrophotometry has been applied for the elimination of the mutual spectral interferences and the analysis of binary, ternary and quaternary mixtures of complexes of microgram amounts of divalent ions of cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, nickel, zinc and iron with 4-(pyridyl-2-azo)resorcinol (PAR) in the range of 0.05-1 microg/ml (0.2-4 microg/ml for lead). The first derivative spectra can be used for the determination of both components in the majority of binary mixtures except of Cu(II) and Co(II) and systems containing Fe(II). The second and the third derivative spectra allow to determine one constituent in some ternary and quaternary mixtures.

Novel vitamin E derivative with 4-substituted resorcinol moiety has both antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory properties.

A novel vitamin E derivative, (6"-hydroxy-2",5",7",8"-tetramethylchroman-2"-yl)methyl 3-(2',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)propionate (TM4R), which has a chromanoxyl ring and 4-substituted resorcinol moieties, was synthesized; and its inhibitory effects on tyrosinase, antioxidant ability, and lightening effect of ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced hyperpigmentation were estimated. TM4R showed potent inhibitory activity on tyrosinase, which is the rate-limiting enzyme in melanogenesis. The scavenging activities of TM4R on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radicals were found to be nearly the same as those of alpha-tocopherol. Furthermore, an efficient lightening effect was observed following topical application of TM4R to UVB-stimulated hyperpigmented dorsal skin of brownish guinea pigs. These results suggest that TM4R may be a candidate for an efficient whitening agent, possibly by inhibiting tyrosinase activity and biological reactions caused by reactive oxygen species.

Interpretation of structure formation during the sol-gel transition of a resorcinol-formaldehyde solution by population balance.

Growth of colloidal particles formed during the sol-gel transition of a resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) solution was simulated based on the population balance equation by using the discrete-sectional model (DSM). During the early stage of the sol-gel transition, the transient change of sizes of colloidal particles estimated by this method agreed well with the previous experimental observation by dynamic light scattering (DLS), which confirmed the influence of the catalyst concentration of a starting RF solution on the growth rate of the particles. From the size distribution of colloidal particles predicted at the gelation time, the surface area of a RF hydrogel after the completion of the sol-gel transition was estimated, which coincided with the BET surface area of a RF aerogel because the porous structure of a hydrogel was maintained and few micropores were formed during supercritical drying.

Synthesis of mesoporous zeolite a by resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogel templating.

Mesoporous zeolite A has been synthesized by using a template method with resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogels having three-dimensional mesopores. It was characterized with X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption. The pore size distribution calculated from the nitrogen adsorption isotherm is a bimodal distribution with micropores and mesopores. Field emission scanning electron micrograph observations confirm the presence of mesopores.

Discrete versus infinite molecular self-assembly: control in crystalline hydrogen-bonded assemblies based on resorcinol.

Cocrystallization of 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (4,4'-bipyeth) with resorcinol (res), 4-chlororesorcinol (4-Cl-res), and 4,6-dichlororesorcinol (4,6-di-Cl-res) yields molecular solids (4,4'-bipyeth).(res) 1a, 2(4,4'-bipyeth).2(4-Cl-res) 1b, and 2(4,4'-bipyeth).2(4,6-di-Cl-res) 1c with components held together by O-H...N hydrogen bonds. In 1a the components form an infinite 1D polar array, whereas in 1b and 1c the components form 0D four-component complexes. Formation of the discrete assemblies is attributed to peripheral steric effects, which block the solid-state polymerization. [reaction: see text]
