The portrait of a murderer.

A portrait is presented of an impulsive, violent and paranoid young murderer. A review of the psychiatric literature for indicators which address themselves to predicting murderous behavior yields a broad spectrum of theories and observations. The portrait presented includes a composite of many of the indicators which the various authors have described. The patient presented is felt to represent a discernable stereotype, and the predisposing factors which are viewed as contributiing to his murderous behavior are offered and given priorities.

Demorgraphic characteristics in affective disorders.

One hundred and fifty four consecutively evaluated new and return psychiatric outpatients were examined by the same interviewer using a detailed, precoded questionnaire based on the diagnostic criteria for psychiatric research proposed by Feighner et al. Affective disorders were present for 75% of the patients and were associated with older age, divorce and a shorter duration of marital status. Race, sex, education and income levels were not related to the presence of affective disorders. Sixty patients with diagnoses of primary affective disorders and 56 patients with diagnoses of secondary affective disorders were identified and studied. Secondary affective disorders were found to be associated with males, younger age (under 34), unmarried marital status, and lower income levels. Primary affective disorders were associated with higher annual incomes (over +4,000) and fewer individuals with a "some high school only" education. Forty one patients with diagnoses of unipolar primary affective disorders were examined. Sex, race, age, marital status and duration of marital status did not vary for the two groups and were not associated with polarity of affective disorders. Lower education and annual income levels both were demonstrated for patients with bipolar primary affective disorders.

The article investigates the culture- and socialhistorical background of the origin and early development of sexual pathology in Germany. In its first part it shows how sexual pathology, first known as Psychopathia sexualis, came into being as a special field of psychiatry. Its most important founder, Richard von Krafft-Ebing, constructed a system of sexual perverts. After 1869, together with colleagues he developed wholly new concepts of deviant sexuality and how to deal with it. In the second part it is shown which points of Krafft-Ebing's concept of perversity were taken over by his medical successors and which points were modified or even rejected as a result of sharp criticism. Finally the long-term effects of the pathologization of deviant sexual behaviour are depicted, the medicalization of social deviance, the change in understanding of sexuality and other developments.

[The female sexual delinquent].

Among 371 adult sexual delinquents, there were only 14 women. From a total of 16 female sexual delinquents, 9 were feeble-minded, 4 mentally disabled, 3 were physically disabled, and almost all were uneducated and solitary people. The personality was distinguished by emotional disturbances, unsteadiness, impulsiveness, and often anti-social behaviour. Only in the cases of incest between brother and sister were cases of inhibited female character discovered. Among others, 3 cases of sexual crimes against children, and one case of probable fetishism are presented. Traditional moral inhibitions, passivity and an extensive lack of aggressiveness in the sexual behavior of woman, together with a stronger mental link between eroticism and sexuality than with the male, are seen as the main causes for the low figure of female sexual delinquents.

Nonpsychotic personality disturbances: a re-evaluation and reclassification.

The classical notion of neurosis as the prototypical form of nonpsychotic personality disturbance must be rejected in favor of the categories of (a) personality pattern disturbance and disorder of life style, and most especially, (b) character disorder. Category (a) would include schizoid, paranoid, and cyclothymic personality pattern disturbances and compulsive and hysteroid personality as disorders of life style. Each of these would occupy one end of a 'psychotoid' continuum, at the other end of which would be a familiar type of psychosis such as paranoid schizophrenia or pseudoneurotic schizophrenia. The most numerous of the nonpsychotic disturbances (in the tens of millions in the USA alone) come under category (b), the character disorders, involving a special sort of failure to inhibit impulse and unsocialized self-seeking. Character disorders are seen by us as turning on an eccentric axis, alternating between the two foci of 'dependency' and 'aggression'.
