Partial pulpotomy in a traumatized primary incisor with pulp exposure: case report.

Crown fracture with pulp exposure in primary incisors is a rare condition. Despite the fact that the vitality of the pulp can be preserved, such teeth are usually extracted due to lack of patient cooperation. This article reports a successful conservative treatment of a fractured primary incisors with pulp exposure and undeveloped root. The child was sedated with midazolam and nitrous oxide, and partial pulpotomy was performed using calcium hydroxide. Follow-up radiographs 21 weeks later revealed closure of the apex and apposition of a dentin bridge close to the amputation site.

The development of formocresol as a medicament for primary molar pulpotomy procedures.

The development of formocresol as a pulpotomy medicament is charted from the 19th Century to the present day. While the solution has come in and out of vogue, few agents can seriously challenge its efficacy. Doubts about its toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity have led, however, to a call for a more dilute formulation as well as a review of alternative medicaments. Problems arise in deriving an appropriate formula for a dilute version from existing formulations, which appear to have misinterpreted the concentration of constituents in the original solution.

Success of electrofulguration pulpotomies covered by zinc oxide and eugenol or calcium hydroxide: a clinical study.

Electrofulguration pulpotomies were completed on 47 primary molars in 38 patients, aged 3 years 1 month to 8 years 1 month. Following electrofulguration, teeth were assigned randomly to one of two groups. In group 1, a zinc oxide and eugenol (ZOE) base was placed over the pulpal stumps and, in group 2, a calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) base was placed. Teeth were evaluated clinically and radiographically after 1, 3, and 6 months by two independent examiners. After 6 months, the clinical success of the ZOE and Ca(OH)2 groups was 77.39 and 81.0%, respectively. Radiographically, after 6 months, the ZOE group had a success rate of 54.6% and the Ca(OH)2 group, 57.3%. There were no statistical differences between the two groups, either clinically or radiographically.

Long-term follow-up of glutaraldehyde pulpotomies in young permanent molars.

Fifteen children with fifteen cariously exposed first permanent molars were treated with glutaraldehyde pulpotomies, using 5 percent buffered glutaraldehyde (pH8). All cases were followed up for a five-year period. Clinical and radiographic success rates obtained at the end of the fifth year were 93.3%.

A conservative approach to the pulpotomy in primary teeth.

This study evaluates the importance of preserving the dentinal roof of the pulp chamber, when the pulpotomy technique is performed, thus obtaining an important reinforcement of the tooth by employing a very simple technique. Therefore, the current vertical fracture of the primary molars is avoided even though a steel crown is not adapted.

Immunohistochemical study of dental pulp applied with 4-META/MMA-TBB adhesive resin after pulpotomy.

The purpose of this study was to investigate nerve regeneration and proliferative activity in amputated pulp tissue after the application of 4-META/MMA-TBB adhesive resin (4-META resin). Calcium hydroxide was used as a control material. At 3 days, fibroblast-like cells were positive for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in both 4-META resin- and calcium hydroxide-treated groups and were located mainly within 0.5 mm from the cut surface. Only a few fragmented neurofilament protein (NFP)-positive nerve fibers were observed in this area. At 7 and 14 days, the number of PCNA-positive cells had gradually decreased and regenerated NFP-positive nerve fibers were observed close to the cut surface of the pulp in both groups. At 21 days in the experimental group, several PCNA-positive cells were still found in the area 0.5 mm from the cut surface, and NFP-positive nerve fibers were detected about 0.15-;0.2 mm from the cut surface. In contrast, a dentin bridge was produced under the necrotic layer at 21 days in the control group. PCNA-positive cells were not found underneath the dentin bridge, but NFP-positive nerve fibers had regenerated close to it. These results suggest that although cell differentiation and nerve regeneration are delayed, wound healing occurred even after the application of 4-META resin to exposed pulp surface the same as calcium hydroxide application.
