Partial orientation pop-out helps difficult search for orientation.

We interrupted pop-out search before it produced a detection response by adding extra distractors to the search display. We show that when pop-out for an orientation target fails because of this interruption, it nevertheless provides useful information to the processes responsible for difficult search. That is, partial pop-out assists difficult search. This interaction has also been found for color stimuli (Olds, Cowan, & Jolicoeur, 2000a, 2000b). These results indicate that interactions and/or overlap between the mechanisms responsible for pop-out and the mechanisms responsible for difficult search may be quite general in early visual selection.

[Orientation without external orientation clues in reptiles (Hemidactylus frenatus Gekkonidae)].

In a black-painted cylindric arena Geckos (Hemidactylus frenatus) are able to find their hiding place without the aid of external orientation clues. This proprioceptive knowledge of the position is independent of the azimuth of the actual position of head and body, but it is influenced by a passive turning of the reptile. These findings lead to the assumption that the receptors of the labyrinth participate in the endogeneous (idiothetic) course control.

The influence of verbal descriptions versus orientation codes on kindergartners' memory for the orientation of pictures.

Kindergarten children who viewed a series of 10 line drawings of objects subsequently showed little ability to distinguish between these pictures and their left-right mirror images. However, the children's memory for orientation improved substantially when children were induced to (a) give detailed verbal descriptions of the pictures, or (b) specify a difference between characteristics on the child's side versus the experimenter's side of each picture, or (c) both. The 3 induced strategies were equally effective. On a posttest given approximately a week later, the children did not maintain use of any of these effective strategies.

Impaired stimulus-driven orienting of attention and preserved goal-directed orienting of attention in unilateral visual neglect.

Neglect patients do not respond to stimuli presented on the side of space contralateral to the side of their brain lesions, indicating deficits to attentional or representational mechanisms. We describe a patient who shows a left neglect in normal reading and line bisection but an intact ability to locate the left end of the stimulus. Further tests showed that his seemingly intact ability to search into the "neglected" side was due to his ability to use local elements of the stimulus as cues in his serial search for the left end. The patient's left neglect was significantly reduced after he located the left end of the stimulus. In contrast, his neglect was not reduced by making the stimulus on the neglected side physically more salient. These results suggest that his neglect is due largely to an impairment of the mechanism mediating automatic, stimulus-driven orienting of attention. In contrast, the controlled goal-directed attentional search is largely preserved and can be used to alleviate neglect.

Tangible differences between adolescent-oriented and adult-oriented prenatal care.

Comprehensive prenatal care reduces many of the risks associated with adolescent childbearing. To learn why this intervention strategy is successful, we compared the care received by 123 poor, black, younger than 19-year-olds in an adolescent-oriented prenatal program to that received by 72 sociodemographically similar, black, 19-30-year-olds in a university hospital-based prenatal clinic. We found that adolescents entered care later (13.6 +/- 5.6 vs. 11.7 +/- 3.4 weeks; p less than 0.01) and were less likely to obtain an adequate quantity of care then were adults (45.5% vs. 61.1%; p = 0.04). However, teens were enrolled in the Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) food supplement program more rapidly than adults (within 7 +/- 6 vs. 10 +/- 6 weeks of the first prenatal visit; p = 0.002), were referred more often to community service agencies for help with nonobstetric, psychosocial, and financial problems (37.4% vs. 18.3%; p less than 0.0001), and were tested and treated more frequently for sexually transmitted diseases (p less than 0.0001). When the adolescents entered care they were smaller, had lower hematocrits, more social and behavioral problems, poorer diets, and more sexually transmitted diseases than did the adults. Later in gestation, however, hematocrits, diets, weight gain, and birth outcomes were similar in the two groups. The implications of these findings for health care providers and for further research are discussed.

Orientation of actin monomer in the F-actin filament: radial coordinate of glutamine-41 and effect of myosin subfragment 1 binding on the monomer orientation.

We have employed the method of radial distance measurements in order to orient the actin monomer in the F-actin filament. This method utilizes fluorescence resonance energy transfer measurements of the distance between two equivalent chemical points located on two different monomers. The interprobe distance obtained this way is used to compute the radial coordinate of the labeled amino acid [Taylor, D. L., Reidler, J., Spudich, J. A., & Stryer, L. (1981) J. Cell Biol. 89, 362-367]. Theoretical analysis has indicated that if radial coordinates of four points are determined and six intramolecular distances are known, one can, within symmetry limits, position the monomer about the filament axis. The radial distance of Gln-41 that had been enzymatically modified with dansyl, rhodamine, and fluorescein derivatives of cadaverine was found to be approximately 40-42 A. The determination of the radial distance of Cys-374 was accomplished by using monobromobimane and N-[[(iodoacetyl)amino]ethyl]-5- naphthylamine-1-sulfonate as donors and N-[4-[[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]azo]phenyl]maleimide as acceptor; the results were consistent with a radial coordinate for this residue of 20-25 A. The effect of myosin subfragment 1 (S1) binding on the radial coordinates of (1) Gln-41, (2) Cys-374, and (3) the nucleotide binding site was also examined. S1 had a small effect on the radial coordinate of Gln-41, increasing it to 44-47 A. In the two remaining lases the change in the radial coordinate due to the S1 binding was negligible. This finding excludes certain models of the interaction between actin and S1 in which actin monomer rotates by a large angle when subfragment 1 binds to it.

A Model Rural Health Orientation Course Using Interdisciplinary, Community Oriented, Inquiry Based Strategies.

Introduction to Rural Health was developed as the introductory course for the Community Partnerships in Health Education - a new curriculum educating students using interdisciplinary, community oriented, and inquiry based strategies. Medical students, nursing students, and public health students participated in an elective curriculum designed to teach interdisciplinary groups of students to deliver primary health care in under-served communities. The curriculum began with an intensive one-week course designed to introduce students to the community, its people, their health care needs, and the process of working in interdisciplinary groups. The course was taught using a variety of community based activities. Student evaluations indicated that students strongly agreed that the course objectives were met using this nontraditional methodology. Qualitative analysis indicated that students regarded the team-building aspects of the course as the most influential. Community members indicated a high level of satisfaction with their input in the developmental process and with the extent to which community resources and interests were included.

What does sexual orientation orient? A biobehavioral model distinguishing romantic love and sexual desire.

Although it is typically presumed that heterosexual individuals only fall in love with other-gender partners and gay-lesbian individuals only fall in love with same-gender partners, this is not always so. The author develops a biobehavioral model of love and desire to explain why. The model specifies that (a) the evolved processes underlying sexual desire and affectional bonding are functionally independent; (b) the processes underlying affectional bonding are not intrinsically oriented toward other-gender or same-gender partners: (c) the biobehavioral links between love and desire are bidirectional, particularly among women. These claims are supported by social-psychological, historical, and cross-cultural research on human love and sexuality as well as by evidence regarding the evolved biobehavioral mechanisms underlying mammalian mating and social bonding.

Schneider-oriented versus Conrad-oriented psychiatric diagnosis in the same German clinic.

The Chair of the University Nervenklinik in Homburg/Saar was held by Klaus Conrad from 1949-58 and by H.-H. Meyer, a former pupil and colleague of Kurt Schneider, from 1962-72. As the catchment area and admission policy of the clinic remained substantially unchanged throughout, comparison of the relative proportions of all admissions allocated to different diagnostic categories in 1949-58 and 1962-72 can be used to elucidate the similarities and differences between Conrad's and Schneider's diagnostic criteria. The results of this comparison indicate that Schneider's concept of schizophrenia was broader than Conrad's, and his concept of manic-depressive depression more restricted. More detailed comparisons are complicated by differences in nomenclature and in the varieties of functional mental illness recognized in the two periods. However, it seems that Conrad's concept of mania was wider only when the atypical schizophrenia-like psychoses diagnosed during the Conrad era were added to the Conrad-oriented cases of mania; when this was not done, the Schneiderian concept of mania was broader.

[Functional hemispheric asymmetries in perception of digit and line orientation orientation (author's transl)].

In Exp. I, right-handed Ss made the "same" or "diffeeent" judgement to paired digits serially presented to the right and left visual field, and exhibited erroneous judgements in the left visual field lead condition. These results suggest the left hemisphere superiority. In Exp. II, the Ss were requested to make the "same" or "different" judgment and to press a key as fast as possible to the paired line orientation. The right visual field lead condition product more errors than the left visual field lead condition. This suggests the right hemisphere superiority. But no difference appeared between both conditions in the reaction time. The opposite hemispheric superiority, found in perceiving verbal and non-verbal materials in the 2 experiments, would be attributed to the basic difference in "perceptual" process.

Intrinsic motivation in product-oriented and non-product-oriented activities.

This study investigated the hypothesis that purposeful activity is an intrinsic motivator. We hypothesized that subjects would take longer to perceive themselves to be working hard and would have a higher heart rate increase when working on a product-oriented activity. Fifteen subjects sanded a cutting board that they could keep and a piece of wood that they could not keep until they reached a rating of 15 (hard) on the Borg Rating Scale of Perceived Exertion. No significant differences were found in the subjects' heart rate increase or in the time it took subjects to perceive themselves as working hard. Subjects reported significantly more enjoyment in sanding the cutting board than in sanding the wood, and significance increased further upon completion of the sanding board. Ex post facto, when subjects were categorized into three groups depending upon the degree of liking for each activity, it appeared that the degree of liking may be important in predicting exercise effort. Implications for practice and further research are discussed.

[Oriental medical doctors and the oriental medicine training institute during the era of enlightenment].

The medical system of the Koryo Kingdom was maintained by the Choson Dynasty without much change. In the meantime, with the tide of enlightenment surging into the Korean Peninsula, Western medicine was introduced into this land and began to be recognized as a reliable, new healing art. At that time, Western medicine was highly valued by court officials and some upper-class people. However, the greater part of the general public preferred Oriental medicine on account of their long tradition and failed to understand the importance of Western medicine. With the Kabo-Kyongjang (Reformation), Korea, in imitation of Japan, began pursuing the policy of enlightenment. Meanwhile, Japan drove China out of Korea and later succeeded in Russia's encroachment upon the Korean Peninsula. By so doing, Japan actively began interfering in Korea's national affairs, politically, diplomatically and militarily. Japan applied to Korea the same, even harsher, method that it used at the time of the Meiji Restoration and began to encroach upon Korea's sovereinty. ...

Biomechanical properties and collagen fiber orientation of TMJ discs in dogs: Part 1. Gross anatomy and collagen fiber orientation of the discs.

The present study investigated the gross anatomy and collagen fiber orientation of TMJ discs in dogs using macroscopic, stereomicroscopic, light microscopic, and scanning electron microscopic techniques. Results showed that (1) the surface of the disc has an undulated configuration (a "fingerprint pattern" under stereomicroscope), which appears to aid in storing synovial fluid and providing lubrication to the joint; (2) the fine fibrils in the middle part are twisted together tightly, presenting a wavy, winding, lamina layer structure anteroposteriorly that works to absorb shock; (3) the mediolateral fibers are composed of loose and less wavy bundles, and they are crossed perpendicularly by anteroposterior fibers in anterior and posterior bands. In fact, a fibrous anulus in the periphery of the disc is composed of the mediolateral fibers of anterior and posterior bands and the anteroposterior fibers of the medial and lateral portions of the middle band, which suggests a stabilizing function.

Stoichiometry, base orientation, and nuclease accessibility of RecA.DNA complexes seen by polarized light in flow-oriented solution. Implications for the mechanism of genetic recombination.

By using flow linear dichroism, in combination with nuclease digestion and two spectroscopically distinguishable DNAs, we demonstrate the existence of two internal and one external DNA-binding sites in the RecA fiber. A number of different complexes between RecA and single- and double-stranded DNAs are characterized with respect to stoichiometry, location, and base orientation of each of the associated DNAs. Based on these results, we discuss important steps of the mechanism of general genetic recombination.

[Individually oriented progress research: detection and evaluation of therapeutic effect based on individual treatment goals. 1: Is there, in research on results, a space for individually oriented procedures?].

Starting with the thesis that targets and addressees of outcome research stipulate the selection of the appropriate methods and criteria, the necessity to include individually oriented techniques in the evaluation of therapeutic outcomes is pointed out. Such a method is introduced and its "rationale" is discussed, so that the conditions of its application will become clear. In the second part, questions concerning the practice with this method will be discussed.

Structure, synthesis and orientation of microfibrils. VII. Microtubule reassembly in vivo after cold treatment in Oocystis and its relevance to microfibril orientation.

A large reduction in cortical microtubule number occurs upon maintaining cultures of O. solitaria at 1 degrees C. Returning the cultures to 25 degrees C results in a rapid (15 min) recovery of the microtubule population. This feature is discussed in terms of the structural and synthetic requirements of a microfibril orientation model.
