Measurements of actinide gut-transfer factors in humans.

Measurements have been made of the gastrointestinal absorption in humans of 239Np and 242Cm administered together in citrate media. Using five volunteers, consistent results of (2.0 +/- 0.2) x 10(-4) and (1.7 +/- 0.3) x 10(-4) were obtained for Np and Cm respectively; the quoted uncertainties are the standard errors of the means. A progress report is given of work to measure the f1 value for Pu in humans. Early work suggests an f1 value of 2 x 10(-4).

Studies on the lysosomal binding of 141Ce, 239Np, 239Pu and 241Am in rat and Syrian hamster liver using carrier-free electrophoresis.

The binding of 141Ce, 239Np, 239Pu and 241Am in the liver of rats and Syrian hamsters, following injection in essentially monomeric form, was analyzed by carrier-free electrophoresis at 4-9 days and several months after radionuclide injection. In contrast to density gradient methods lysosomes can be clearly separated from other cell organelles by carrier-free electrophoresis. These, and previous results from this and other laboratories confirm that lysosomes are the main initial binding site for these four radionuclides in the livers of rats and Syrian or Chinese hamster. Light microscopic autoradiography showed that at all the time intervals studied 241Am was more or less uniformly distributed in the liver of all three species. Thus, the changes in the electrophoretic pattern of the nuclides, observed at later time periods in hamsters, cannot be explained by gross redistribution phenomena such as accumulation in macrophages.

Analysis of the 237Np-233Pa photon spectrum using the full response function method.

A study has been made of X- and gamma-ray emission from 237Np in equilibrium with 233Pa using the full response function method. This analysis process is characterised by photon spectrometry in which the entire spectrum is modelled in a pseudo-empirical way by means of elementary functions describing the total absorption and escape peaks, the Compton diffusion internal and external to the detector and the peaks resulting from detection of internal conversion electrons. This method has been applied to determine the L X-, K X- and gamma-rays emission probabilities in 237Np and 233Pa decay studies.

Distribution of Np and Pu in Swedish lichen samples (Cladonia stellaris) contaminated by atmospheric fallout.

The activity concentrations of (237)Np and the two Pu isotopes, (239)Pu and (240)Pu, were determined in lichen samples (Cladonia stellaris) contaminated by fallout from atmospheric nuclear test explosions and the Chernobyl accident. The samples were collected at 18 locations in Sweden, from north to south, between 1986 and 1988 and analysed with high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) and alpha spectrometry. Data on the activity ratios (238)Pu/(239+240)Pu and (134)Cs/(137)Cs measured previously were also included in this study for comparison. The (237)Np activity concentration ranged from 0.08 +/- 0.01 to 2.08 +/- 0.17 MBq kg(-1), depending on the location of the sampling site and time of collection. The (239+240)Pu activity concentration ranged from 0.09 +/- 0.01 to 4.09 +/- 0.15 Bq kg(-1), with the (240)Pu/(239)Pu atomic ratio ranging between 0.16 +/- 0.01 and 0.44 +/- 0.03, the higher ratios indicating a combination of weapons test fallout and Chernobyl fallout. The (237)Np/(239)Pu atomic ratios ranged between 0.06 +/- 0.01 and 0.42 +/- 0.04, the lower ratios indicating combination of weapons test fallout and Chernobyl fallout. At a well-defined sampling site at Lake Rogen (62.32 degrees N, 12.38 degrees E), additional lichen samples were collected between 1987 and 1998 to study the distribution of Np and Pu in different layers. The concentrations of the two elements follow each other quite well in the profile.

Studies of Np and Pu in the marine environment of Swedish-Danish waters and the North Atlantic Ocean.

The long-lived anthropogenic radionuclides (237)Np, (239)Pu and (240)Pu were determined in marine environmental samples (seaweed and seawater) collected from Swedish-Danish waters and the North Atlantic Ocean at various locations on different occasions during the period 1991-2001. The measurements were performed with sector field Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and conventional alpha spectrometry. The (237)Np activity concentrations in Fucus vesiculosus and surface seawater from the Swedish west coast and Danish waters ranged from 0.16+/-0.02 to 1.02+/-0.09 mBq kg(-1) (dry weight) and 0.65+/-0.02 to 1.69+/-0.02 mBq m(-3), respectively, depending on the location and sampling year. Most of the (237)Np in these waters is believed to originate from the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant, with some contribution from global fallout. The (240)Pu/(239)Pu atomic ratios in F. vesiculosus samples are reported in this study with an overall average of 0.17+/-0.03. The (237)Np and (239)Pu activity concentrations observed in surface seawater collected in North Atlantic waters ranged from 0.16+/-0.01 to 0.62+/-0.08 mBq m(-3) and from 0.64+/-0.05 to 4.27+/-0.08 mBq m(-3), respectively, and the (237)Np/(239)Pu atomic ratios were a good indicator of conservative behaviour of Np in marine waters.

Determination of the absolute mobility and the equivalent ionic conductivity of NpO2+ at 25 degrees C and at infinite dilution by capillary electrophoresis-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry.

The absolute mobility of NpO2+ and its equivalent ionic conductivity were extrapolated at 25 degrees C and at infinite dilution using a set of experimental data obtained at various ionic strengths. The separation was carried out by capillary electrophoresis (CE) at various concentrations of creatinine at a pH of 5. The detection of NpO2+ was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry coupled on-line with CE. The following values have been found: mu0NpO2+ (25 degrees C) = (2.94 +/- 0.07) x 10(-4) cm2 V(-1) s(-1) and lambda0NpO2+ (x 10(4), 25 degrees C) = 28.3 +/- 0.7 m2 S mol(-1).

Global distribution of Pu isotopes and 237Np.

Inventories and compositions of Pu isotopes and 237Np in archived soil samples collected in the 1970s from 54 locations around the world were determined to provide regional baselines for recognizing possible future environmental inputs of non-fallout Pu and Np. As sample sizes used in this work were small (typically 1 g), inhomogeneities in Pu and Np concentrations were easily recognizable and, as a result, we were able to determine that atypical debris in South America, from French testing in the South Pacific, is more widely and uniformly distributed than previously supposed. From our results we conclude that fallout 237Np/239Pu atom ratios are generally lower in the Southern Hemisphere (approximately 0.35) than in the Northern Hemisphere (approximately 0.47.) Moreover, 237Np/239Pu atom ratios are more device-dependent, hence more variable, than counterpart 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios. Given predictable trends caused by sample inhomogeneities, with only two exceptions, the Pu results of this work are entirely consistent with (and in several instances improve on) results previously reported for these same samples. However, unlike earlier interpretations used to explain these results, we recommend that fallout isotopic signatures be represented by mixing lines, rather than averages, to better reflect regional variations of stratospheric fallout inventories relative to tropospheric fallout inventories, and provide the theoretical basis for doing so. Finally, the Np results of this work constitute one of the largest single compilations of such data reported to date.

Effect of pH and temperature on the sorption of Np and Pa to mixed anaerobic bacteria.

While considering the geological disposal of radioactive wastes, the behaviour of the radionuclide Np and its daughter element Pa was investigated in the presence of a mixture of anaerobic bacteria (MAB). Originally, MAB were used for the treatment of pulp and paper wastewater. The interaction between radionuclides and bacteria was evaluated by determining distribution coefficients (Kd) over 10 days and at 5 degrees C and 35 degrees C. Kd for Np at 35 degrees C after 5 days had a low value around 10(-2) After 10 days, however, Kd was > 100-fold higher. On the other hand, Kd at 5 degrees C was low (10(-2)) throughout, without any significant increase over time. The interaction between Pa and MAB was found to be stronger than that for Np, with Kd for Pa about 100 times higher. The Kd was controlled by some basic factors, the activity of MAB, the complexing capacity of MAB, and the chemical conditions in the solution such as pH and Eh.

Heavy metals and rare earth elements source-sink in some Egyptian cigarettes as determined by neutron activation analysis.

Heavy metals and rare earth elements in two types of cigarettes were studied. The contents of trace elements were determined by using delayed neutron activation analysis. In the present study 11 elements have been detected in popular and fine brand cigarettes marketed in Egypt. Evaluation of these elements with their potential hazards for smokers is briefly discussed. The material balance (source and sink) for each element was determined. Also the ratio of element recovery to the total amount was assessed.

Reduction of Np(V) and precipitation of Np(IV) by an anaerobic microbial consortium.

A combination of experimental, analytical, and modeling investigations shows that an anaerobic, sulfate-reducing consortium reduced Np(V) to Np(IV), with subsequent precipitation of a Np(IV) solid. Precipitation of Np(IV) during growth on pyruvate occurred before sulfate reduction began. H2 stimulated precipitation of Np(IV) when added alone to growing cells, but it slowed precipitation when added along with pyruvate. Increasing concentrations of pyruvate also retarded precipitation. Accumulation of an intermediate pyruvate-fermentation product--probably succinate--played a key role in retarding Np(IV) precipitation by complexing the Np(IV). Hydrogen appears to have two roles in controlling Np precipitation: donating electrons for Np(V) reduction and modulating intermediate levels. That Np(V) is microbially reduced and subsequently precipitated under anaerobic conditions has likely beneficial implications for the containment of Np on lands contaminated by radionuclides, but complexation by fermentation intermediates can prevent immobilization by precipitation.

Measurement of 237Np in environmental water samples by accelerator mass spectrometry.

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) was used to measure 237Np in environmental water samples extracted from Irish Sea sediments. The samples were of limited volume (approximately 700 ml) and of low activity (0.06-0.79 mBq l-1; 2.30-30.3 pg l-1). AMS proved to have the required sensitivity for measuring these samples, and was in principle capable of measuring much smaller amounts, as low as 0.4 microBq (3.9 x 10(7) atoms). However, the background level in the procedural blanks showed that there was a systematic low level 237Np contamination of each sample, arising from the 239Np yield monitor used in the separations procedure, which effectively increased the detection limit of these analyses.

Survival, lung clearance, dosimetry and gross pathology of rats exposed to either NpO2 or PuO2 aerosols.

PURPOSE: To compare survival, lung dosimetry and gross pathology after inhalation exposure of rats to either NpO2 or industrial PuO2 aerosols with similar granulometric parameters. Because the specific alpha activity ratio Pu/Np is about 600, a much more homogeneous lung irradiation was expected for NpO2. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were exposed once and their lung burdens were measured by X-ray spectrometry at different times post-exposure up to death. The time-course of doses delivered to the lungs were estimated, taking into account individual lung clearance parameters and body and lung weights. Gross lung pathologies were scored at autopsy. RESULTS: In the range of initial lung deposits (ILD) studied (0.1-4 kBq), lung clearance impairment and reduced lifespan were only observed after exposure to NpO2. For similar ILD or doses, the highest incidences of lung lesions assumed to be tumours were observed for NpO2 with a saturation of lung tumour induction for doses larger than 8 Gy (ILD: 1.5kBq). Up to 22Gy (ILD: 3.5kBq), such saturation was not observed for PuO2. CONCLUSIONS: NpO2 appears much more toxic than PuO2. Before saturation, lung tumour incidence increased nearly linearly with dose, the slope of the curve for NpO2 being about twice as steep as that for PuO2.

Long term retention of 237Np in rats.

This interim report summarizes the results of observations during the first year after a single injection of 237Np nitrate (0.2 or 1.0 mg/kg body weight) into adult female rats and further preliminary data obtained with young animals. The retention of 237Np was followed by whole body counting and serial sacrifice of groups of animals. The retention data could be fitted to three-component exponential equations which show no major differences between the two 237Np dose levels. The half-times and extrapolated initial fractions calculated from the first two exponential terms indicate that one fraction, representing about 40 per cent of the injected 237Np was excreted within the first 5 days and an additional 15 per cent within the first 5 months, while the rest was excreted with a half-time of about 3.5 years. This final long term component is assumed to indicate the rate of loss of 237Np from the skeletal compartment. In young animals both whole-body and skeletal retention of 237Np during the first 5 months of observation was about 50 per cent higher than in the adults. Several soft tissue tumours, mostly mammary tumours, have appeared to approximately the same extent in both control and 237Np treated adult rats but no osteosarcomas were detected up to 15 months after injection of 237Np.

Transfer of Np(V) nitrate from gastrointestinal segments of the adult rat.

The transfer of soluble Np(V) nitrate was measured in gastrointestinal segments from adult rats by two procedures: instillation, in segments in which the physico-chemical form of Np might be modified by gastrointestinal factors; and perfusion, in segments in which the luminal state of Np remains constant. These assays allowed accurate measurement of the Np(V) transferred from the intestine to the whole body. The amount measured was proportional to segment length and to the duration of the experiments, which lasted for periods of 0.25 to 2 h. Under these experimental conditions, hourly transfer values were about 2 percent, both per millilitre of Np(V) solution instilled and per 10 cm of jejunum perfused. This flux is very much greater than that which may be deduced from studies in which Np was gavaged into intact rats. Intestinal transfer of Np was constant for Np concentrations ranging from 5 X 10(-12) M to 1 X 10-4) M. Raising the concentration of Np(V) to more than 1 X 10(-4) M reduced its intestinal transfer. Addition of Fe(II) also reduced it. The small intestine was the main site of Np(V) absorption, since the transfer from instilled jejunum was about 20 times that observed from the stomach, and no difference was noted between jejunal and duodenal transfer.
