Perceptual transparency in neon color spreading displays.

In neon color spreading displays, both a color illusion and perceptual transparency can be seen. In this study, we investigated the color conditions for the perception of transparency in such displays. It was found that the data are very well accounted for by a generalization of Metelli's (1970) episcotister model of balanced perceptual transparency to tristimulus values. This additive model correctly predicted which combinations of colors would lead to optimal impressions of transparency. Color combinations deviating slightly from the additive model also looked transparent, but less convincingly so.

Effects of luminance contrast on color spreading and illusory contour in the neon color spreading effect.

The present study examined whether color spreading and illusory contours in the neon color spreading effect of Ehrenstein figures are governed by different mechanisms. In the experiment, Ehrenstein figures with colored crosses inserted in the central gaps were used. There were three luminance conditions: the luminance of the Ehrenstein figures was lower than, the same as, or higher than the luminance of the background. In each condition, 16 trials (2 sets of instructions X 8 repetitions) were conducted in a random order. Subjects were required to adjust the luminance of the colored crosses according to one of the two sets of instruction given before each trial. One was to adjust the upper and lower thresholds in the luminance of the colored crosses such that their color was seen to spread out of the crosses. The other was to adjust the thresholds such that circular illusory contours were visible. It was found that illusory contours disappeared and the color spreading remained when the crosses and the Ehrenstein figures were in or nearly in isoluminance or when the Ehrenstein figures and the background were in isoluminance. These results suggest that color spreading and illusory contours are governed by different mechanisms.

Preliminary investigation of resistance of plasmid DNA to neon ion beams using transformation into recipient Escherichia coli cells.

The sensitivity of the vector plasmid pKmK8 DNA to neon ion beams was studied under dry conditions. This plasmid contains the cloning vector pJKKmf(-) and a 3.6 kbp segment encoding the Escherichia coli crp gene that can be used in mutagenesis analysis. The survival curve of the plasmid indicated an exponential profile and a D10 value of about 16 kGy in the E. coli wild-type strain for DNA repair capability. This was similar to the D10 value for the shuttle vector plasmid pZ189 DNA. Therefore, it was assumed that the excision repair system in E. coli was not effective for repairing DNA lesions induced by irradiation with heavy ion beams.

[Low-intensity helium-neon laser in the treatment of patients after endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy].

Described in the paper is an efficiency study of using, postoperatively, the low-intensity helium-neon laser (LIHNL) in patients with obstruction of the lacrimal tracts. Eighty patients were examined after endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy. They were shared between 2 groups with respect to a postoperative course: group 1--experimental, 40 patients, and group 2--control, 40 patients. The experimental patients received, apart from the traditional postoperative therapy, a course of LIHNL therapy. The controls received only the traditional postoperative treatment. The efficiency of postoperative treatment was evaluated by clinical, instrumental and laboratory examination methods. The study denoted that the use of LIHNL in the early postoperative period after endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy had a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect, speeded up the wound healing, prevented the growth of granulation tissues and the merging of the shaped lacrimal-sac fistula with the nasal cavity. LIHNL contributed to a complete recovery of the functional activity of the nasal mucous tunic. Thus, the LIHNL therapy essentially facilitates the postoperative management of patients, cuts the rehabilitation period and enhances the treatment results.

[Functional state of various physiological systems of the human body during respiration of neon-oxygen mixture at depth up to 400 meters].

Hyperbaric neon-oxygen mixture has been studied for the effect of its high density under pressure of 41 ata on basic physiological functions of human organism. Typical changes of the cardiorespiratory system and tissue respiration parameters are revealed. Changes in physical working capacity are shown. Exposure to gaseous medium of high pressure and density is accompanied by the development of some compensatory-adaptive reactions. The possibility to perform mid-hard physical work is attained with overstrain of respiration and circulation function.

[Effect of low-energy helium-neon laser on the biological properties of Mycobacterium tuberculosis].

The results of experimental studies of M. tuberculosis biological properties tested in guinea pigs which were subjected to different doses of helium-neon laser radiation are given. The functional evidence is compared with the results of electron microscopic study of the irradiated culture. The investigation revealed that laser radiation caused changes in biological properties of M. tuberculosis. A decrease in growth properties and virulence was found to be related to a radiation dose. It is suggested that a drop in the biological activity of M. tuberculosis under laser radiation be associated with its influence on the Mycobacterium lipid layer which contains a cord-factor and responsible for their virulence.

[Use of helium-neon laser irradiation in prenatal prevention of uterine inertia].

This paper reports results of clinical and experimental studies which sought to validate endonasal laser treatment for prevention of dysfunctional labor in late toxemia. Electrophysiologic and histochemical studies showed stimulating effects of the helium-neon laser treatment on function of large cell hypothalamic nuclei and uterine contractility. Clinical efficiency of this treatment was seen as a lower incidence of dysfunctional labor and cesarean section.

[Combined helium-neon laser therapy in patients with ischemic heart disease].

The paper describes the combined helium-neon-laser (HNL) therapy (intravenous and topical) developed by the authors to treat patients with coronary heart disease. A high efficacy of this therapy mode was demonstrated in patients over 70 years of age with Functional Classes III-IV angina refractory to antianginal agents. The mechanisms responsible for therapeutic efficiency of laser irradiation were studied at the membraneous and cellular levels. There is evidence that the combined HNL-therapy had advantages over topical HNL exposure in terms of higher clinical efficiency and patterns of abnormal chemical changes.

Helium-neon laser therapy in the prevention of postoperative swelling and pain after wisdom tooth extraction.

Seventeen patients with symmetrically embedded lower wisdom teeth were selected for this study, intended to evaluate the local effect of soft laser therapy on postoperative pain. Both lower third molars were removed in the same operation. The test side, chosen by lot, was treated using a helium-neon laser (632,8 nm, 8 mW, 50 Hz) for 2 minutes. The other side served as the untreated control side. Facial swelling was measured using a modification of the face-bow technique. Postoperative pain was estimated using a visual analogue scale (VAS). When it became apparent that conventional statistical analysis was revealing no difference in postoperative swelling and pain between the test and the control groups, the study was discontinued for ethical reasons.

[Effect of intravascular irradiation of blood by helium-neon laser on the markers of the area of ischemic myocardial damage in patients with acute myocardial infarction].

In 80 patients with acute transmural myocardial infarction (30 patients with anterior infarction and 50 with posterior infarction), endovascular irradiation of blood with helium-neon laser was studied for effects on the time-course of the processes of ischemic lesion and myocardial necrotization from the data on precordial mapping of 35 leads ECG (epsilon ST, nST, nQS) and serum creatinine phosphokinase and its MB fraction (maximal activity peak attainment time, level normalization, summary Q ejection and activity increase rate, delta E/delta t) were measured. The irradiation initiated no later than 4 hours after the development of anginal pains was found to contribute to a more rapid formation of a necrotic zone and to a decrease in extension and relapses of myocardial infarction.

[Use of helium-neon lasers in the treatment of peptic ulcer].

An analysis of treatment of ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum with the help of helium-neon lasers has been made. The pathological focus (ulcer) was influenced in two ways: through the endoscope and by means of biologically active points. Positive effects were obtained in 96.9% of the patients. Operations were performed on 3.1% of the patients where laser therapy failed to give good effects. Contraindications to laser therapy were considered to be bleeding, callous and malignant ulcers.

[Histophysiology of the neurosecretory systems of the hypothalamus, epiphysis cerebri and myometrium in pregnant rats exposed to a helium-neon laser].

An experimental study in pregnant rats has demonstrated an obvious effect of endonasal, vaginal and epigastric application of the helium-neon laser on histophysiologic characteristics of the hypothalamo-neuropituitary neurosecretory system, the epiphysis and the myometrium. Therefore, the exposure to the laser beam, particularly the endonasal one may enhance the cervical-hypothalamic reflex.

The fragmentation of 670A MeV neon-20 as a function of depth in water. I. Experiment.

We present the final analysis of an experiment to study the interaction of a beam of 670A MeV neon ions incident on a water column set to different thicknesses. The atomic number Z (and, in some cases, the isotopic mass A) of primary beam particles and of the products of nuclear interactions emerging from the water column close to the central axis of the beam was obtained for nuclei between Be (Z = 4) and Ne (Z = 10) using a time-of-flight telescope to measure the velocity and a set of silicon detectors to measure the energy loss of each particle. The fluence of particles of a given charge was obtained and normalized to the incident beam intensity. Corrections were made for accidental coincidences between multiple particles triggering the TOF telescope and for interactions in the detector. The background due to beam particles interacting in beam line elements upstream of the detector was calculated. Sources of experimental artifacts and background in particle identification experiments designed to characterize heavy ion beams for radiobiological research are summarized, and some of the difficulties inherent in this work are discussed. Complete tables of absolutely normalized fluence spectra as a function of LET are included for reference purposes.

[Effect of a helium-neon laser on cellular growth: an in vitro study of human gingival fibroblasts].

For a better understanding of the clinical effects obtained with lasers of low power on oral wounds, an in vitro study was conducted on human fibroblasts obtained from a primary gingival culture in order to evaluate the effect of one or several irradiations obtained with a Helium-neon laser (632.8 nm, 10 mW). An irradiation of 10 minutes (1.2J/cm2) induced a growth acceleration of the cellular population compared to a non-irradiated control population. The greatest effect was obtained four days after treatment. Furthermore, if the cells were submitted to repeated irradiations every four days, the cellular divisions increased after each treatment. A careful interpretation of these in vitro results on healing time of oral wounds in vivo would suggest that it may be due partly to a recycling actin of low power lasers on resting cells.

[Results of helium-neon laser radiation action on the hematopoietic system experimentally and in the laser therapy of surgical diseases].

The investigation of effects of the red light of the helium-neon laser on hemopoiesis of experimental animals has provided data on the activation of erythropoiesis and the presence of the leucocyte redistribution reaction in the peripheral blood. No pathological changes in the morphological composition of the peripheral blood were detected in patients with a deforming arthrosis and patients with gastric ulcer in the process of laser therapy. Favourable changes were noted.
