By now, most doctors in Australia will have had some experience with the new SI units which are being used for pathology test results, especially chemical pathology. While the usage of SI units has spread rapidly through public hospitals in Australia, spread in the non-hospital sector has been slower. However, the change will occur, and so the following is presented to assist general practitioners to understand the reasons for the change, and to interpret results expressed in the new system.

Pneumatic tube systems play an important material handling role in many hospitals. These systems are costly and complex to design and operate, yet little exists in the way of analytical methodologies for them. We present a decision support framework based on defining relevant system performance metrics, traffic analysis reporting, as well as discrete event simulation modeling. We have used this approach to analyze numerous pneumatic tubes systems in the United States and present a representative case study from a large tertiary care hospital. Our general approach can be generalized to other computer controlled hospital operational systems such as elevators, track vehicles, automatic guided vehicles, workflow enabled processes, and laboratory automation systems.

Confusion and misconception characterize the designation of near visual acuities because of the numerous systems in use. Most of these systems do not lend themselves to accurate or easy usage or to comparison with other test distances. Use of the M system, with the actual test distances recorded in meters, is suggested as a simplified system for standardization.
Linear estimation theory is developed in the context of object reconstruction from data obtained by a general shift-variant imaging system. The formalism adopts nonstationary first- and second-order statistics of the object and noise classes as priori information. In addition, a metric for system optimization that depends on the a priori information is presented. The role of this a priori information as derived from several different training sets is then studied with respect to reconstruction performance for various noise levels in the data, using a tomographic coded-aperture system as the model. In a separate experiment, a simple coded-aperture system is optimized to a particular object class, and the results are compared with those from an earlier optimization experiment.
The metrical analysis of the anatomical characteristics is important because of its objectiveness. As it is concerned with the organs belonging to the locomotor system, the metrical method of the bones has already been systematized by Martin (1928), whereas the same kind of method for use on other organs remains undeveloped. The author aims to establish the metrical method of the plantar aponeurosis. The method for measuring the tibial part of the aponeurosis developed in this paper is sufficiently applicable for obtaining its principal anatomical characteristics. The results show that the tibial portion of the plantar aponeurosis becomes statistically significantly wider and thinner in its anterior part, and that the thickness of the tibial portion of the aponeurosis in the anterior part is larger on the right side than on the left side.

The Robodoc total hip replacement procedure requires a wider exposure of the proximal femur, especially of the greater trochanter, than the standard procedure. Moreover, the leg must be placed in a rigid leg-holder apparatus to obtain fixation in maximal hip adduction and external rotation. This may impair the hip abductors and reduce hip abduction in the mid- and terminal stance phase of the cycle. In this study we compared patients after Robodoc and conventional total hip arthroplasty with three-dimensional gait analysis (VICON System, Oxford Metrics, Oxford, U.K.) to assess the kinematics of the pelvis and hip. 25 patients underwent total hip replacement by means of the Robodoc total hip arthroplasty system, 25 patients were treated with conventional total hip replacement, and 40 healthy volunteers served as controls. None of the patients undergoing total hip replacement, robotic or conventional, obtained normal kinematic gait patterns 6 months after surgery. However, the reduction in hip abduction did not differ significantly in patients undergoing robotic or conventional total hip arthroplasty, which suggests that the robotic procedure did not impair hip abductor function more than the conventional method.

A system of metrics is proposed for a rough-guide evaluation of the greenness of new and existing chemical technologies as well as for the analysis of flow sheets of new processes. The proposed methodology is based on a hierarchical approach. The main feature of the proposed system is the reflection of the stakeholder relevance of various aspects of green chemistry at different levels of the hierarchy and the corresponding system boundaries. Therefore, the developed methodology provides a basis for the multiobjective comparison of alternative technologies in terms of their greenness. A novel technology for recovery of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) using monolithic adsorbents has been evaluated in terms of its environmental efficiency using a small set of indicators assembled into a hierarchical metric. A comparison between incineration and recovery of VOCs via adsorption has been performed using the proposed methodology. The comparison highlights considerable environmental advantages of the recovery technology. Flow sheet analysis points out which stages of the adsorption process could be further improved. Indicators have been evaluated within defined system boundaries.
This paper presents a novel digital watermarking technique using face and demographic text data as multiple watermarks for verifying the chain of custody and protecting the integrity of a fingerprint image. The watermarks are embedded in selected texture regions of a fingerprint image using discrete wavelet transform. Experimental results show that modifications in these locations are visually imperceptible and maintain the minutiae details. The integrity of the fingerprint image is verified through the high matching scores obtained from an automatic fingerprint identification system. There is also a high degree of visual correlation between the embedded images, and the extracted images from the watermarked fingerprint. The degree of similarity is computed using pixel-based metrics and human visual system metrics. The results also show that the proposed watermarked fingerprint and the extracted images are resilient to common attacks such as compression, filtering, and noise.
