Pre-census mapping in Lesotho.

"This paper discusses in respect of Lesotho the existing cartographic base for census mapping; census organization; methodology of census taking in Lesotho; geographical planning and specific strategies evolved in census mapping for the recent 1986 population census; some of the basic problems encountered in enumeration area mapping during the 1986 census; and also the use of census enumeration areas as a frame for national household survey capability programme and post-census cartographic activities."

Population dynamics in Ciskei.

"Population density is one of the most widely-used statistics in human geography. Maps showing areas of high and low density illustrate stark contrasts which result from the interplay of numerous forces. In South Africa political developments during the apartheid era have left a long-lasting impression upon population distribution and density. Conditions in one former homeland, Ciskei, are examined."

The TIGER system: automating the geographic structure of the United States census.

The success of a census rests not only on how well the Bureau of the Census collects data, but also on how well the Census Bureau links those data to geographic areas. Problems with the geographic materials produced for the 1980 census caused confusion on the part of the Census Bureau's field staff, the staff processing the collected data, and the users of the resulting information. To avoid similar problems in 1990, the Geography Division of the Census Bureau is developing an automated geographic system that will support numerous Census Bureau operations beginning with the 1990 Decennial Census. A major component of this automated system is the computer-readable map data being developed in cooperation with the US Geological Survey using their 1:100-000-scale map series as the source.

Computer systems to support census geography.

The development of computer systems that support the geography of the census in Canada is described. The authors "present proposals for the 1991 Census that increase the level of automation, whether the geography changes or not. In addition, opportunities for change and improvement, should the geography change, are outlined. To minimize the risks involved, it is important to give these different proposals serious consideration early in the planning of a census."

The detailed human geography of Britain.

"This article contains eight cartograms which help to provide answers to a variety of social and demographic questions about modern Britain. How English is England? How is the pattern of birth-places changing? Is there a north-south divide in the nation's health? Are the inner cities less healthy than rural areas? Has the changing pattern of unemployment eroded the economic divide between north and south? How do the various political, social and demographic patterns of modern Britain relate to each other?"

The Ras-Raf-MEK-ERK pathway in the treatment of cancer.

The mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are conserved proteins that regulate cell growth, division and death. Although activated in the cytosol, the MAPKs translocate to the nucleus upon activation and phosphorylate a large number of nuclear proteins. Investigating how Ras transmits extracellular growth signals, the MAPK pathway has emerged as the crucial route between membrane-bound Ras and the nucleus. The MAPK pathway represents a cascade of phosphorylation events including three pivotal kinases, namely Raf, MEK (MAP kinase kinase), and ERK (MAP kinase). These kinases present new opportunities for the development of novel anti-cancer drugs designed to be target-specific and probably less toxic than conventional chemotherapeutic agents. A number of drugs inhibiting Ras, Raf or MEK are currently under clinical investigation. This review addresses the rationale for targeting the MAP kinase pathway and the current status of various pharmacological approaches.

The changing geography of U.S. Hispanics, 1850-1990.

"In 1930, the majority of Hispanics were of Mexican descent and lived in the five Southwestern states of Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. After World War II the Latino migrant stream began to diversify and include large numbers of Caribbeans, and Central and South Americans who generally settled in the Eastern states and California.... The U.S. Hispanic population has increased from approximately one million in 1930, to approximately 32 million in 1997. County maps chronicle the changing distribution and numbers of Hispanics from 1850 to 1990."

[[The theory of demographic transition revisited]].

The author presents a brief discussion of the theory of demographic transition using data for Japan for the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. The conclusion is that "cultural differences gave rise to appreciable changes in fertility, but economic status differences did not cause much variation in fertility. This also...[indicates] that cultural factors through which fertility decline has been diffusing [among] classes are important in determining fertility behaviour in Japan." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Urban vegetational change as an indicator of demographic trends in cities: the case of Detroit.

"In this study the author seeks to find whether changes in urban vegetation can be linked to urban social changes by using Detroit [Michigan] as a case study. Demographic trends in Detroit are analyzed in light of the increasing greenness in the city detected by recent satellite images. Robust relationships between greenness change and demographic factors associated with urban decay (population decline, an increase in poverty level, and an increase in vacant units) are found.... It is concluded that vegetation trends could be used as indicators of urban socioeconomic changes. A vegetation-based urban environmental quality index could therefore be developed to monitor physical and social changes in the cities."

Socio-demographic area of Delhi.

"This paper evaluates statistically and displays cartographically previously untabulated and unpublished data from the 1971 Census of India for the entire population of Delhi. Data pertain to Delhi's census 'charges' (wards) and were originally tabulated in the form of 348 variables relating to occupational distribution, migration, and non-worker status--each classified separately by gender. Although these data are subject to multiple reporting errors and fallacious ecological inferences, they constitute the largest database yet assembled for comparative analysis of Indian intra-metropolitan patterns and structures. Socio-demographic patterns and areas are identified reflecting the traditional-modern, formal-informal, familistic, and ethnic constituents of the national capital of India."

Mortality in Italy: contours of a century of evolution.

The authors construct contour maps of Italian male and female mortality rates for ages 0-79 for the years 1870-1979 using life table data from published sources. The maps "display persistent global and prominent local patterns of mortality, simultaneously over age, by period, and for cohorts." Previously documented aspects of the evolution of Italian mortality are highlighted graphically, and new areas for study are indicated. (summary in FRE, ITA)
