Self-organization of the large-scale planetary and plasma drift vortices.

This paper is a semi-review. A new understanding of the self-organization mechanism of solitary (i.e., long-lived and, in this sense, soliton-like) large-scale vortices in geophysical fluid dynamics, as well as that of drift vortices in the magnetized plasma is discussed. This understanding differs from that described in a review paper by Nezlin [Chaos 4, 187-202 (1994)]. Earlier it was believed that formation of the solitary Rossby (and plasma drift) vortices was a result of equilibrium between wave dispersion and KdV-type nonlinearity. Under the influence of experimental data obtained by our team [M. V. Nezlin and E. N. Snezhkin, Rossby Vortices, Spiral Structures, Solitons (Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, 1993)], it became obvious that the self-organization of the structures inevitably includes an essential effect of other nonlinearities; first, that presented by the Jacobian in the equations. (We replace the term "Rossby soliton" by the more exact one "the Rossby solitary vortex.") It must be noted from the very beginning that the term "self-organization" is used mainly in context with an explanation which factors (dispersion and nonlinearities of different kind) condition formation of the solitary (stable, long-lived) Rossby structures. Although, the experimental fact (see below) that the size of solitary vortices turns out to be close to the Rossby-Obukhov radius, independently of the size of the vortex local source, calls to mind the formation of an attractor. In essence, the Rossby solitary vortex self-organization process (although, only for the case of anticyclones) was described by Nycander and Sutyrin [Dyn. Atmos. Oceans 16, 473-498 (1992)]. Unfortunately, however, the authors did not use the term "self-organization." Our description, being in accord with Nycander and Sutyrin, relates not only to anticyclones, but also to anticyclones and cyclones. Second, a description of the experimental discovery of "anomalous" cyclonic-anticyclonic asymmetry is given. Unlike "normal" asymmetry which manifests, in particular, in that the big vortices dominating in giant planet atmospheres (e.g., the Great Red Spot of Jupiter, the Brown Spot of Saturn, the Great Dark Spot of Neptune, et al.) are anticyclones, the asymmetry described manifests in that large-scale solitary vortices may be as cyclones only, not anticyclones. This phenomenon is observed in the presence of a rather strong and properly directed gradient in rotating shallow water depth. This type of asymmetry exists with drift vortices in magnetized plasma. Third, the physical difference between the planetary atmosphere and the laboratory model based on the shallow water layer in a rotating paraboloid is discussed (following, in principle, the Nycander-93 work). It is shown that laboratory modeling is adequate. Fourth, it is also shown that the most essential behavior of the vortices studied on the so-called "beta-plane" of planets and in plasmas can be described by means of rather simplified and visual equations. These are the so-called generalized Charney-Obukhov equation in fluid dynamics and its plasma counterpart, the generalized Hasegawa-Mima equation. Finally, nonlinearities are revealed, which condition properties of the geostrophic vortices under study on the "f-plane," i.e., in the polar regions of planets. &c

Drift mechanism caused by a nonlinear wave and the Cassini Division and Uranian rings formation.

The mechanism leading to the observed coexistence of gaps and narrow ringlets in the planetary rings is found. It is based upon the quasi-stationary radial drift of the matter under action of two forces in the disk plane: the Coriolis force and the Reynolds stresses. To an accuracy of the factor of 2 the first force coincides with the Lorentz force, therefore the radial drift in rings is similar to the gradient drift of plasma in the magnetic field. The second force is produced by the wave generated by the nearby satellite in the resonance position. In inertial systems, the second force alone causes a matter flow in its direction, called acoustic streaming. Since the radial drift is caused by nonlinear time-averaged force of high-frequency harmonic interactions in the wave, it exists in the wave propagation zone: from the birth place of the wave-the resonance position, up to the reflection point of the wave, where its group velocity vanishes. Our estimations show that the size of the density wave propagation zone corresponding to the density wave which had been formerly generated the 2:1 orbital resonance with Mimas is consistent with the width of the Cassini Division. In our case the nature of the radial drift is such that first of all it clears out the farthest from the resonance position; later, the closer areas also get affected by the drift. The zone closest to the resonance position itself is the last to be involved in the process. The matter carried away by the drift is partially accumulated near the resonance position forming a narrow dense ringlet. (c) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Susceptibility of nonfermentative gram-negative bacilli to tobramycin.

There has been increasing interest in the pathogenic role of nonfermentative gram-negative bacilli in human infections. Except for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the susceptibility pattern of these organisms to tobramycin has not been evaluated thoroughly. The activity of tobramycin, as compared with that of gentamicin, was tested by the serial broth dilution technique against 178 isolates of nonfermentative gram-negative bacilli obtained from various sources. P. aeruginosa, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus var. anitratum (Herellea vaginicola), A. calcoaceticus var. Iwoffi (Mima olymorpha), Pseudomonas alcaligenes, and Pseudomonas acidovorans accounted for 82% of all cultures tested. The vast majority of these organisms were susceptible to both tobramycin and gentamicin. Resistance was most common with Alcaligenes odorans; six of 12 isolates were resistant to gentamicin and tobramycin. There was only one isolate of Pseudomonas diminuta; it was highly resistant to both antibiotics.

The GermOnline cross-species systems browser provides comprehensive information on genes and gene products relevant for sexual reproduction.

We report a novel release of the GermOnline knowledgebase covering genes relevant for the cell cycle, gametogenesis and fertility. GermOnline was extended into a cross-species systems browser including information on DNA sequence annotation, gene expression and the function of gene products. The database covers eight model organisms and Homo sapiens, for which complete genome annotation data are available. The database is now built around a sophisticated genome browser (Ensembl), our own microarray information management and annotation system (MIMAS) used to extensively describe experimental data obtained with high-density oligonucleotide microarrays (GeneChips) and a comprehensive system for online editing of database entries (MediaWiki). The RNA data include results from classical microarrays as well as tiling arrays that yield information on RNA expression levels, transcript start sites and lengths as well as exon composition. Members of the research community are solicited to help GermOnline curators keep database entries on genes and gene products complete and accurate. The database is accessible at http://www.germonline.org/.

Interactions of disparate scales in drift-wave turbulence

Renormalized statistical theory is used to calculate the interactions between short scales (wave vector k) and long scales (wave vector q<<k) in the Hasegawa-Mima model of drift-wave turbulence (generalized to include proper nonadiabatic response for k( ||)=0 fluctuations). The calculations include the zonal-flow growth rate as a special case, but also describe long-wavelength fluctuations with q oriented at an arbitrary angle to the background gradient. The results are fully renormalized. They are subtly different from those of previous authors, in both mathematical form and physical interpretation. A term arising in previous treatments that is related to the propagation of short-scale wave packets is shown to be a higher-order effect that must consistently be neglected to lowest order in a systematic expansion in q/k. Rigorous functional methods are used to show that the long-wavelength growth rate gamma(q) is related to second-order functional variations of the short-wavelength energy and to derive a heuristic algorithm. The principal results are recovered from simple estimates involving the first-order wave-number distension rate gamma;((1))(k)equals, single dot abovek small middle dotnablaOmega;(k)/k(2), where Omega;(k) is a nonlinear random advection frequency. Fokker-Planck analysis involving gamma;((1))(k) is used to heuristically recover the evolution equation for the small scales, and a random-walk flux argument that relates gamma;((1))(k) to an effective autocorrelation time is used to give an independent calculation of gamma(q). Both the rigorous and heuristic derivations demonstrate that the results do not depend on, and cannot be derived from, properties of linear normal modes; they are intrinsically nonlinear. The importance of random-Galilean-invariant renormalization is stressed.

Intermittency in drift-wave turbulence: structure of the momentum flux probability distribution function.

We analytically compute the probability distribution function (PDF) of the local Reynolds stress ( R) for forced Hasegawa-Mima turbulence. With the assumption that the PDF tail is due to an instanton with the spatial form given by the modon solution, the tail of the PDF of R is found to be a stretched, non-Gaussian exponential, with the specific form exp[-cR(3/2)] ( c is a constant). We relate the temporal localization of the instanton to the degree of "burstiness" of the momentum transport event.

Inverse energy cascade correlated with turbulent-structure generation in toroidal plasma.

We report the first experimental observation of the inverse energy cascade correlated with the generation of large turbulent structures. Spectral energy is nonlinearly transferred from the unstable region of the spectrum into large coherent structures and into broadband turbulence in agreement with theoretical expectations. These results are obtained by producing plasma in the H-1 heliac whose parameters allow a single-field, Hasegawa-Mima-type model to be used for the spectral energy transfer analysis.

Rapid beat generation of large-scale zonal flows by drift waves: a nonlinear generic paradigm.

The generalized Charney-Hasegawa-Mima equation is unstable to a four wave modulational instability whereby a coherent, monochromatic drift wave can drive a band of modes and associated zonal flows unstable. Although initially the fastest growing modes dominate, a secondary nonlinear instability later drives the longest wavelength zonal flow and its associated sidebands at twice the growth rate of the fastest growing modulationally unstable modes. This results in a direct transfer from strongly unstable short wavelength modes to the weakly unstable long wavelength modes, which drains the short wavelength pump energy. A related but less efficient direct enstrophy cascade generates very short wavelength modes lying outside the band of modulationally unstable modes.

Stationary vortical flows in two-dimensional plasma and in planetary atmospheres.

We derive the equation governing the asymptotic stationary states generated by decaying turbulence in two-dimensional plasma and planetary atmosphere. These fluids may be described by the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima equation and their relaxation states show a high degree of organization in vortical flows, similar to the Euler fluid. We develop a field-theoretical framework and show that these systems attain at stationarity the extremum of an energy functional corresponding to self-dual fields.

Susceptibility of clinical isolates of bacteria to cefoxitin and cephalothin.

The susceptibility of 4,929 unselected clinical isolates of bacteria to cefoxitin and cephalothin was determined by the single-disk method, using a computer-associated electronic zone analyzer to obtain, record, and process measurements of sizes of zones of inhibition. Both cefoxitin and cephalothin were effective against most gram-positive strains, including Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, micrococci, and all streptococci except enterococci. The three strains of Listeria monocytogenes tested were susceptible to cephalothin but resistant to cefoxitin. There was little difference between the cefoxitin and cephalothin susceptibility of Salmonellae, Citrobacter sp., Enterobacter sp., Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas sp. Cefoxitin was more effective then cephalothin against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Serratia sp., indole-positive Proteus sp., Providence sp., Flavobacter sp., Herellea vaginicola, and Mima polymorpha. Cefoxitin also appeared to exhibit enhanced activity, as compared with cephalothin, against Bacteroides sp. Thus cefoxitin appears to have a very broad antibacterial spectrum which is greater than that of cephalothin, especially against gram-negative strains.

Response of the Mimeae to some physical and chemical agents.

Isolates of Mima polymorpha and Herellea vaginicola obtained from retail food products were investigated for their ability to hydrolyze proteins, starch, and lipids as well as for their ability to initiate growth under varying conditions of pH, sodium chloride concentration, and temperature. None of the isolates hydrolyzed starch and a few hydrolyzed proteins, whereas most were actively lipolytic. Members of each genus grew over the range 6 to 42 C; in general, H. vaginicola was more tolerant to high concentrations of sodium chloride and to acid conditions than was M. polymorpha.

Effect of gamma irradiation on the microflora of freshwater fish. 3. Spoilage patterns and extension of refrigerated storage life of yellow perch fillets irradiated to 0.1 and 0.2 megarad.

Maximal shelf life was determined and microbial flora were compared for irradiated (0.1 and 0.2 Mrad) and nonirradiated yellow perch fillets stored at 1 C. Shelf life was estimated by organoleptic determinations. Microbiological studies included determination of the effects of irradiation on the total aerobic microbial population, lag phase, and rate of growth. Genera of organisms isolated from fillets through the course of microbial spoilage were identified, and the proteolytic activity of the organisms was determined. Plate counts for fish prior to irradiation showed the presence of approximately 10(6) organisms per g of sample. Irradiation to 0.1 and 0.2 Mrad produced 1.4 and 3 logarithm reductions of the initial count, respectively. Irradiation to 0.1 and 0.2 Mrad approximately doubled the product's shelf life. Organisms initially isolated from the nonirradiated fillets, in order of decreasing number, consisted of Flavobacterium, Micrococcus-Sarcina, Achromobacter-Alcaligenes-Mima, Pseudomonas, Microbacterium, Vibrio, Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Lactobacillus, Brevibacterium, and Aeromonas. By the 6th and 9th days of fillet storage, Pseudomonas and the Achromobacter group were the predominant organisms. All members of the genus Flavobacterium, but not all members of the genus Pseudomonas, were proteolytically active on raw fish juice-agar and skim milk-agar media. The Achromobacter group was found to be nonproteolytic on both media. Residual flora of fillets irradiated to 0.1 and 0.2 Mrad consisted of the Achromobacter group, Lactobacillus, Micrococcus-Sarcina, and Bacillus. Their sequence in predominance, however, varied with dose level. Not all proteolytic bacteria in the fillets were eliminated by 0.1 and 0.2 Mrad; proteolytic Micrococcus-Sarcina survived these treatments.

Practical physiological schema for the identification of Herellea vaginicola and its differentiation from similar organisms.

A seven-test schema is presented that will identify Herellea vaginicola and differentiate it from Mima, Moraxella, and other gram-negative organisms whose biochemical reactions are similar to those of Herellea. Of 133 cultures examined, 49 were Herellea strains accurately identified by this schema: 34 of the 49 cultures were the capsular type strains of Herellea and 15 strains were from a group of 53 ATCC cultures listed under several different taxons. The remaining 84 non-Herellea cultures yielded 4 (4.7%) false positive identifications for Herellea; two were from a selected group of organisms (EO-1) whose taxonomic position is undetermined and two were Klebsiella ozaenae. Since neither of these groups is frequently encountered in clinical specimens, from a practical viewpoint they present no particular problem in the identification of Herellea. We recommend the use of the seven tests as described in this paper as a routine procedure for the identification of H. vaginicola.

Detection of arginine dihydrolase in nonfermentative gram-negative bacteria by use of thin-layer chromatography.

Thin-layer chromatography was used to detect the presence of the arginine dihydrolase system in nonfermentative gram-negative bacteria. The test was positive for the fluorescent pseudomonads as well as Pseudomonas maltophilia, whereas other Pseudomonas sp., Mima, and Herellea were negative. This procedure can be completed in a few hours and may be useful in the clinical laboratory.

Ontogeny of the bovine immune response.

The ontogenesis of the bovine immune response was studied in three embryos (<40 days) and 106 fetuses of various ages. In the absence of overt antigenic stimulation, fetuses had lymphoid development of the thymus at 42 days of gestation, the spleen was structurally present at 55 days, and certain peripheral lymph nodes were present at 60 days. Mesenteric lymph nodes were structurally present by 100 days of gestation, and lymphoid tissue of the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the lower ileum, was observed in histologic sections of a 175-day fetus with a bacterial infection. Pyroninophilic cells, plasma cells, and germinal centers were present in lymph node sections of antigenically stimulated fetuses. Lymphoid tissue developed more rapidly in fetuses with bacteria, viral antigens, or apparent maternal red-blood-cell antigens than in the normal fetus. Thymic and splenic indices reached maximal values in the 205- to 220-day fetal age group. Immunoglobulin M (IgM)-containing cells were first observed, by immunofluorescence, in a single fetus at 59 days of gestation. Immunoglobulin G (IgG)-containing cells were observed at 145 days of gestation in one fetus with a bacterial and viral infection. IgM-containing cells were observed in 36 fetuses and IgM and IgG cells were present in seven fetuses. Spleen, lymph nodes, thymus, bone marrow, and liver of one fetus from a dam with lymphosarcoma had immunoglobulin-containing cells. Hemal lymph nodes, blood (buffy coat), Peyer patches, and heart and lung sections from fetuses with immunoglobulin-containing cells in spleen or lymph node did not have immunoglobulin-containing cells. Antigens of the virus of bovine virus diarrhea-mucosal disease (BVD) were detected in one fetus, and antigens of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus were detected in three fetuses; however, viruses were not isolated in primary bovine embryonic kidney cells. Two of the three fetuses with IBR virus antigens had neutralizing serum antibody titers to IBR virus. Bacteria including Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus sp. and Mima polymorpha var. oxidans were isolated from four fetuses. Antibodies that caused the agglutination of maternal red blood cells were present in 8 of 20 bovine fetal serum samples. The antibodies were 2-mercaptoethanol sensitive and partially heat resistant (56 C for 30 min). The ontogeny of the bovine immune response and human immune response were compared, and it was suggested that the similarities were primarily due to the two species having the same approximate gestation period of 280 days.

Nucleic acid homologies among oxidase-negative Moraxella species.

The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) base composition and DNA homologies of more than 40 strains of oxidase-negative Moraxella species were determined. These bacteria have also been identified as belonging to the Mima-Herellea-Acinetobacter group and the Bacterium anitratum group, as well as to several other genera including Achromobacter and Alcaligenes. The DNA base content of these strains ranged from 40 to 46% guanine plus cytosine. DNA-DNA competition experiments distinguished five groups whose members were determined by showing 50% or more homology to one of the reference strains: B. anitratum type B5W, Achromobacter haemolyticus var. haemolyticus, Alcaligenes haemolysans, Achromobacter metalcaligenes, and Moraxella lwoffi. A sixth group comprised those strains showing less than 50% homology to any of the reference strains. Negligible homology was found between strains of oxidase-negative and oxidase-positive Moraxella species in DNA-DNA competition experiments. However, evidence of a distant relationship between the two groups was obtained in competition experiments by using ribosomal ribonucleic acid.

Effect of glutamate on exogenous citrate catabolism of Neisseria meningitidis and of other species of Neisseria.

Resting cell suspensions of Neisseria meningitidis group B (strain 2091) do not catabolize citrate as the sole substrate to an appreciable degree. When another substrate, such as glutamate, is also present to furnish energy for transport, citrate metabolism is greatly stimulated. Within limits, the amount of CO(2) produced from citrate is proportional to the amount of glutamate added. When the cells are disrupted, citrate is degraded at a rapid rate and the stimulatory effect of glutamate is completely eliminated. Pronounced stimulation of citrate metabolism by glutamate was demonstrated in 12 of 13 strains of N. meningitidis tested and only 1 of 6 strains of N. lactamicus. The remaining strains of N. lactamicus and one each of N. gonorrhoeae, N. flavescens, and N. flava did not utilize significant amounts of citrate in the absence or presence of glutamate. N. catarrhalis shared with Mima polymorpha and Moraxella glucidolytica a capability to catabolize citrate at a rapid rate without added glutamate. It is concluded that tests of glutamate-stimulated citrate metabolism may contribute to species characterization in the genus Neisseria.

A study of the Moraxella group. II. Oxidative-negative species (genus Acinetobacter).

A number of nutritional and biochemical properties of more than 100 strains of the oxidase-negative moraxellas (the Mima-Herellea-Acinetobacter group of bacteria) were studied. These properties included the range of carbon sources that can support growth, the utilization of nitrate, the production of proteolytic and lipolytic enzymes, and the reactions involved in the oxidation of sugars and of aromatic compounds. No evidence could be obtained for the accumulation of either poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate or polysaccharide as intracellular reserve materials. Of 158 different compounds tested, the group as a whole could use 85 as sole carbon sources for growth. The nutritional spectra of the individual strains, however, differed widely, with a range of from 17 to 74 alternative substrates. On the basis of 56 selected nutritional and physiological characters used for a numerical analysis, the collection could be divided into two major groups of strains comprising at least seven less clearly defined clusters. Neither the hydrolysis of gelatin nor acid production from aldose sugars was found to be a reliable index of strain affinities indicated by the phenotypic analysis, although both properties were of some use in distinguishing between the subgroups. For reasons that are discussed, we propose that the oxidase-negative moraxellas be placed in the genus Acinetobacter Brisou and Prévot, for which a modified description is presented. A. calco-aceticus (Beijerinck) is proposed as the type species, of which anitratum is regarded as a synonym or variety. On the basis of the present studies and unpublished supporting evidence provided by M. Mandel on deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) composition and by J. Johnson on DNA homologies, it is proposed that two other species in the genus, A. lwoffi (Audureau) and A. hemolysans (Henriksen), as well as one subspecies, A. hemolysans haemolyticus (Stenzel and Mannheim), be recognized provisionally.
