Cardiac hemangiosarcoma in the dog: a review of 38 cases.

During the period 1975 to 1984, a histopathologic diagnosis of primary cardiac hemangiosarcoma was made in 38 dogs at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital. The diagnosis was confirmed by exploratory thoracotomy in 16 cases and at necropsy in 22 cases. At the time of exploratory thoracotomy, 7 dogs were euthanatized because of nonresectability of the primary tumor and/or gross metastatic disease. In 9 dogs, the tumor was resected by removing part of the right atrium. Complications included atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, anemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and pneumonia. Prolonged and multiple hospitalizations were a common feature of the postoperative period. Adjuvant therapy was not utilized in any case. The mean survival time was 4 months (2 days to 8 months).

[Hemangiosarcomas of the liver and the spleen (author's transl)].

Two cases of hemangiosarcoma of the liver and spleen are described. In the first case, a great number of cavernous blood vessels has been found and this, according to the authors, may support the idea that the tumour aroses within the benign hemangioma. In the other case a thrombocytopenia, a rare complication of the liver hemangioblastoma, has been found. It should be stressed that in spite of a malignant nature of these tumours, neoplastic foci were limited only to the liver and the spleen.

Hemangiosarcoma of the thyroid gland. Histological diagnosis problems.

A bleeding tumor of the thyroid gland in a 69-year-old woman is presented. Histologically, it was a hemangiosarcoma with proliferation and vessel neoformation: vascular-like clefts or distinct capillaries with tumoral endo- and perithelial structures were present. With reference to the published data, problems of differential diagnosis in the undifferentiated and giant cell carcinomas of the thyroid gland are discussed.

Hemangiosarcoma in a cow.

A 4-year-old cow initially examined because of hindlimb lameness had a waxing and waning course of illness for 31 weeks. Signs included lameness, swelling of the affected limb, and intermittent fever, and anorexia. Radiography and bacterial culturing suggested osteomyelitis. Terminally, there was peracute anemia and dyspnea. The final diagnosis was hemangiosarcoma of the metatarsus, with metastasis to the lungs.

[Hemangiosarcoma of the scalp].

Report on a 66-year-old patient with a hemangiosarcoma of the scalp which is known to be the preferred site of this type of tumor. The histologically partly benign hemangioma-like appearance contradicts the progredient clinically malignant and deleterious course of the disease which could not be stopped even by immediate radical large excision of the tumorous tissue with following plastic covering.

Cytology of well-differentiated and poorly differentiated hemangiosarcoma in fine needle aspirates.

The cytologic descriptions of fine needle aspirates from one well-differentiated and one poorly differentiated hemangiosarcoma are reported and correlated with the histologic findings. Aggregates of two to ten cells predominated in the aspirate from the well-differentiated tumor. In Papanicolaou-stained smears and filter preparations, single nuclei, resembling intravascular nuclear protrusions in a punch biopsy specimen, projected from some of these cell groups. Shallow longitudinal invaginations characterized the hyperchromatic nuclei. Erythrophagocytosis and cytoplasmic vacuoles were evident in Wright's-stained smears. Individual binucleate cells predominated in aspirates from the poorly differentiated tumor. Their nuclei exhibited thicker membranes, more prominent nucleoli and clearer parachromatin than did those of cells from the well-differentiated tumor. Cytoplasmic projections were common and sometimes quite complex. While these cytologic features are not pathognomonic, they are indicative of a malignant neoplasm and can be combined with clinical and other histopathologic data to provide a complete diagnosis.

Primary hemangiosarcoma of the spleen associated with leukocytosis and abnormal spleen scan.

A 60-year-old Filipino man, who presented with left sided abdominal pain and weight loss, was found to have splenomegaly, an abnormal spleen scan and a leukemoid reaction. Primary splenic hemangiosarcoma was found at splenectomy. Metastases first occurred in the cervical lymph nodes two years after diagnosis. Despite treatment with doxorubicin and radiation therapy there was recurrence in lymph nodes and scan evidence of liver and bone metastases. The patient died 38 months after diagnosis. A liver-spleen scan is helpful in establishing an early diagnosis, and splenectomy before rupture occurs is advisable. The role of chemotherapy needs to be defined.

Cutaneous hemangiosarcoma of the ankle.

A case study of an elderly woman who developed an hemangiosarcoma is presented. The lesion was firm, nodular, bluish-purple in color with an irregular surface and margin. A review of the literature shows that treatment modalities range from wide excision alone to surgical excision in conjunction with preoperative and postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Cutaneous hemangiosarcoma with pulmonary metastasis in a horse.

A 6-year-old Thoroughbred mare had a 7-cm ulcerated mass on the cranial aspect of the left cervical area. Ultrasonography revealed the mass to be < 1 cm thick and composed of small lobules that were filled by material hypoechoic to the surrounding muscle tissues. Fine-needle aspiration of the mass yielded blood, and cytologic examination revealed a few epithelial cells with neoplastic changes. Thoracic radiography revealed an interstitial pattern with several disseminated nodules. A diagnosis of cutaneous hemangiosarcoma with pulmonary metastases was made. The diagnosis was confirmed at necropsy.

[Hemangiosarcoma of the nasal cavity].

Hemangiosarcoma is a rarely diagnosed in the nasal cavity and there are few reports in the ENT literature. The most interesting aspect of our 82-year-old male's case was that he presented all the findings characteristic of angiosarcoma, but the final post-mortem diagnosis was unexpected because of the poor information available until that moment.

[A pony with a metastasized hemangiosarcoma].

A splenic hemangiosarcoma with multiple organ metastases in a pony is reported. Clinical signs included weakness and pallor. Abdominal paracentesis revealed haemorrhagic fluid. Laboratory data included anaemia, thrombocytopenia and hypoproteinaemia. Necropsy findings included a haemangiosarcoma in the spleen with metastases in the lung, liver, kidney and omentum.

[Primary right atrial hemangiosarcoma manifesting as cardiac tamponade: a case report with transesophageal echocardiography].

A 39-year-old woman presented with a right atrial hemangiosarcoma manifesting as cardiac tamponade with complaints of chest discomfort and dyspnea. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed remarkable pericardial effusion and a right atrial mass. Transesophageal echocardiography disclosed the tumor extending into the right atrial cavity. Surgery found the tumor was poorly demarcated, immobile and adhered to the adjacent right atrial wall and septum. The echocardiographic findings correlated well with the surgical and autopsy findings.

[Hemangiosarcoma of the spleen: clinical aspects in 52 dogs].

This study describes clinical aspects, treatment, and survival times of 52 dogs with hemangiosarcoma of the spleen, presented at the Department of Veterinary Surgery, University of Munich, Germany. Depending on the dissemination of the disease the dogs were assigned to three clinical stages: 10 dogs were in stage I (tumor confined to the spleen without metastasis), 18 in stage II (tumor confined to the spleen or ruptured, with or without lymph node involvement but without distant metastasis) and 24 in stage III (with distant metastasis). Dogs in stage I displayed mild and nonspecific symptoms. In stage II and II, half of the patients were presented in shock or collapse after an acute rupture of the tumor. Sonographic examination was found superior in diagnosing splenic neoplasia when compared to radiography. Pronounced laboratory abnormalities were present mainly in patients in stages II or III with anemia, leucocytosis, thrombocytopenia and prolonged bleeding times predominating. Survival times following splenectomy were very variable. The median survival time was 100 days. Because of the high standard deviaton there was no statistically significant difference in survival times between animals of different stages.

Liposome-encapsulated muramyl tripeptide phosphatidylethanolamine adjuvant immunotherapy for splenic hemangiosarcoma in the dog: a randomized multi-institutional clinical trial.

Canine splenic hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a spontaneous tumor with high metastatic potential. Despite surgical excision, most dogs die within 2 months of diagnosis as a result of widespread visceral metastasis. This study was designed to determine the efficacy of liposome-encapsulated muramyl tripeptide phosphatidylethanolamine (L-MTP-PE) when used in combination with splenectomy and systemic chemotherapy for the treatment of HSA in the dog. Thirty-two dogs with HSA and without gross evidence of metastases were treated with splenectomy, stratified by clinical stage, and randomized to receive doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide chemotherapy and either L-MTP-PE immunotherapy or lipid equivalent (placebo liposomes). Dogs were subsequently followed to determine disease-free survival and overall survival times. The effects of L-MTP-PE on serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin 6 activity were assessed on a small subset of dogs. Dogs receiving L-MTP-PE had significantly prolonged disease-free survival (P = 0.037) and overall survival (P = 0.029) compared with dogs receiving placebo. Dogs with clinical stage I disease had significantly prolonged disease-free survival (P = 0. 026) and overall survival (P = 0.017) compared with dogs with clinical stage II disease. Dogs receiving L-MTP-PE had significantly greater serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (P < 0.001) and interleukin 6 (P = 0.007) activities compared with placebo-treated dogs. L-MTP-PE has significant antimetastatic activity in highly malignant, spontaneously occurring, splenic HSA in the dog. Canine HSA may have potential as a large animal model for additional investigation of antimetastatic chemoimmunotherapy.

Generation of recombinant murine retroviral genomes containing the v-src oncogene: isolation of a virus inducing hemangiosarcomas in the brain.

A series of recombinant retroviral genomes was generated by cotransformation of NIH 3T3 cells with a mixture of cloned DNAs: a proviral copy of the wild-type Moloney murine leukemia virus, and Moloney-based vectors containing defective copies of the chicken v-src and the murine v-abl oncogenes. Morphologically transformed foci, appearing at low frequencies in these cultures, released high titers of transforming viruses. Analysis of one group of these viruses showed that the genomes were recombinants containing portions of the viral gag gene juxtaposed to the v-src oncogene. Biologically active cloned DNAs of two of these viruses were obtained and mapped in detail. One of these viruses did not cause disease after inoculation into newborn mice, but the other induced rapidly fatal hemangiosarcomas located exclusively in the brain.
