[Contact behavior of elderly females living alone from the social psychologic viewpoint--an exploratory study. II: Social contact with children (close relations) and with other relatives (siblings, extended family)].

After a theoretical introduction, the authors present the results of an exploratory study on the social contacts between older women living alone and their children and other relatives, respectively. It seems to be of special importance for future examinations not to confine oneself to recording the quality and the quantity of such contacts. The necessity of a description of the social contacts in substance in the individual fields of contact is pointed out.

Beta blockers: the extended family.

Beta-Adrenergic blocking drugs, by occupying beta receptors without stimulating adenylate cyclase, interfere with the physiologic responses mediated by the sympathetic nervous system. This property has led to their application in the cardiovascular disorders on which sympathetic tone either underlies or contributes to the pathogenesis of the process. Lipid solubility, selective beta-receptor blockade, and intrinsic sympathomimetic activity are three additional characteristics of beta blockers that modify the pharmacodynamics and pharmacologic effects of each agent. As the role of the sympathetic nervous system in the pathogenesis of heart disease is better defined, the development of beta blockers with particular pharmacologic profiles and fewer side effects may provide more specific treatment.

Distal 15q trisomy: phenotypic comparison of nine cases in an extended family.

Nine related individuals have been identified as being trisomic for the distal part of the long arm of chromosome 15 (15q23 to 15qter). The physical characteristics, especially the facial features, of these nine cases are similar and distinctive. These include: facial asymmetry, down-slanting palpebral fissures, ptosis, prominent nose, long philtrum, down-turned mouth, midline crease in the lower lip, puffy cheeks, and micrognathia. By comparing related individuals with the same translocation, the variability due to different breakpoints can be eliminated. Clinical similarities between unrelated individuals with similar duplicated 15q material, but differing second chromosomes, suggest that the phenotype is due to the extra distal 15q chromosomal material. We conclude that distal 15q trisomy produces a clinically recognizable syndrome.

[Extended family, immediate family and caregiver contacts of 100-year-old patients in Hungary].

In the year 1987, 218 centenarians lived in Hungary. First the main demographic data were reported by the surveyors of the Central Statistics Office. The basis of the experience was gained on a limited population (123 subjects). The physicians' team was organized by the Gerontology Center of the Semmelweis University of Medicine. They carried out the detailed medical and environmental check-up. The medical and environmental experiences of the gerontologists were published (1). In our present paper we would like to show the different familial and other relationships of the oldest people. The 123 centenarians were scattered over the whole country, altogether in 67 larger or smaller settlements. More of them lived with a daughter (42%), with a son (14%), with a grandchild (7%), with other relatives (5%) and 3 persons lived together with their wives. We found that the subjects who lived with relatives had a better chance to live an active and meaningful life. The co-existence of several generations, the multilateral contacts of centenarians have a beneficial effect on the quality of life.
