The World Wide Web is an increasingly popular source for consumer health information, but many authors have expressed concerns about the quality of health information present on the Internet. We have developed a prototype system that responds to a consumer health query by returning a list of Web pages that are ranked according to the likely quality of the page contents. A computer program identifies some of the criteria that have been suggested for assessing the quality of health information on the Internet. It also identifies characteristics that may serve as proxies for desirable (or undesirable) qualities that are difficult to assess directly using an algorithm. Intervening in the search process and automatically analyzing the contents of each page returned by a general search engine may facilitate the search for high quality consumer health information on the Web.

There is at this time no conceptual model of psychopharmacology for individuals with severe or profound mental retardation who exhibit behavior disorders that unifies this area of psychopharmacology with general psychiatry practice while addressing the unique aspects of this population. The following article presents a 6-step program of diagnostic inquiry and treatment strategy that allows alternate etiological hypotheses to be tested in a clinical practice framework. This format unifies psychopharmacy practice in mental retardation with psychopharmacy practice in general psychiatry.
Psychotherapy process research needs a paradigm capable of integrating activity across biological, affective, linguistic and social domains into one causal model. It also needs a methodology capable of measuring complex deterministic activity spontaneously generated by the therapy participants. Here we articulate a model based on Autopoietic theory and nonlinear quantitative analysis that stands to provide a method and a metric to explore how psychotherapy processes lead to a measurable outcome. Perturbations are the unit of study within the autopoietic framework. Lyapunov exponents are the quantitative tools for the analysis of phase portraits generated by cardiac activity. We propose that these phase portraits can be used to measure the perturbational activity of psychotherapy participants. We buttress this argument with results from a preliminary application of this method in a psychotherapy analogue situation.

A major feature of a national survey of medical and surgical specialties is the development and application of an algorithm for classifying patient care services provided by physicians. The care classification reflects much of prevailing opinion regarding what constitutes primary and nonprimary care. The classification system provides a powerful tool for the analysis of patient care services, since it is based on conditions of access to care, the physician's role in providing the care, measures associated with continuity of care, and a proxy measure of comprehensiveness of care. Furthermore, it is based on the recordings by physicians of actual patient-encounter characteristics and is not operationally dependent on physician characteristics or propensities.
