The effects of delayed access to feed and water on the physical and functional development of the digestive system of young turkeys.

Three experiments were conducted with turkeys to determine the influence of delayed access to feed and water on the development of the digestive system. In all experiments, poults were randomly assigned to three placement times, 6, 30, and 54 h posthatch. Experiments 1, 2, and 3 were terminated when poults were 10, 28, and 14 d old, respectively. In Experiment 1, six poults per treatment were sampled on Days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10. In Experiment 2, 12 poults per treatment were sampled on Days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, and 28. The objective of Experiment 3 was to determine the effect of delayed placement on dietary MEn. Delaying access to feed and water for 54 h adversely affected BW through 10, 28, and 14 d of age in Experiments 1, 2, and 3, respectively (P < or = 0.01). Delayed access to feed and water for 54 h decreased the absolute weights of the small intestine and pancreas and reduced lengths of the small intestine through 5 d posthatch (P < or = 0.05). The relative weights of the small intestine and proventriculus were reduced by delayed access to nourishment through 4 d posthatch. Poults placed on feed at 54 h posthatch had decreased pancreatic amylase activity (P < or = 0.05) at 3 and 4 d, and trypsin activities were depressed at 3 d posthatch (P < or = 0.05). In Experiment 3, dietary MEn value determined at 4 d of age with poults placed 54 h posthatch was less (P < or = 0.07) than the MEn value obtained with poults placed at 6 h posthatch. A 54-h delay in access to feed and water generally delayed development of the digestive system, impaired nutrient utilization, and reduced BW.

[Circulating immune complex and cancer in the digestive system].

The zone electrophoresis on agarose was used to determine the incidence of circulating immune complex (CIC) in blood of 60 patients with cancer in the digestive system and 42 healthy donors. The correlation between cancer and CIC was investigated. The positive results is 75% in patients and 14.2% in the control. There is a significant correlation between the CIC and the stage of lesion. Higher incidence was observed in patients with stage I and II lesions (100% and 85%) than those with stage III lesions (40%). Among 13 positive patients, 5 with stage I lesion became negative and 8 with stage II or III lesions were still positive after operation. These data suggest that the zone electrophoresis be a reliable assay for the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with digestive system cancer. To measure the CIC periodically may be useful for the follow up of the tumor condition before and after treatment.

[The endocrine cells of the digestive system (author's transl)].

Endocrine cells occur in the digestive system as micro-organs (islets of Langerhans) or scattered throughout the epithelium of the gastrointestinal tract ("diffuse endocrine epithelial organ" of Feyrter). These gastro-entero-pancreatic (GEP) endocrine cells synthesize--in addition to serotonin--a great variety of polypeptide hormones, which regulate both carbohydrate metabolism and digestive processes. The present review deals mainly with cytology and cytochemistry of GEP endocrine cells. A synopsis is presented of the 19 endocrine cell types identified to date, which includes their update nomenclature and their anatomical distribution pattern. Morphological-functional aspects of cell biology, pathology, and cytogenesis of theses cells and their position within superimposed systems (APUD cells, paraneurons) are discussed.

[Recent progress in tumor markers of the digestive system].

Recent progress in our tumor marker study of the digestive system was described. Of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), we developed a new assay system for detecting the CEA derived from gastrointestinal tumor tissues selectively, and succeeded to diagnose 72% of colorectal cancer patients including Dukes' A and B classifications. Of mucus antigens, intestinal IMA and gastric GMA, both were fractionated and purified in our laboratory, were demonstrated to be useful markers in detecting carcinofetal-type GI epithelia. Finally, a pancreas cancer-associated antigen (PCAA) derived from normal colonic mucosa in our laboratory, was shown to be identical immunochemically with Gelder's POA. Our results of the combined assay of PCAA and a pancreas tissue antigen (PaA) levels in sera from pancreatic cancer patients were evaluated to be positive in 90% of cases.

[Impairment of the digestive system in high altitude erythrocythemia].

Among 203 patients with high altitude erythrocythemia (HAE), 89% had various kinds of alimentary canal symptoms, while these were present only in 31% of a control group (P less than 0.01). 49% of the HAE group had stomach, while only 8% of the control group had it. Endoscopic examination revealed 44% of the HAE group had peptic ulcer, being much higher than 6% of the control group. The ratio of gastric to duodenal ulcer in the HAE group was 2 to 1. The HAE patients had higher values of ALT, total bilirubin, LDH activity, LDH1 and LDHs, but lower values of AKP, LDH2, LDH4 and gamma-GT than the controls. The difference was, however, of no statistical significance. B mode ultrasonography showed that the incidence of hepatomegaly and splenomegaly was 24% and 11% respectively in the HAE group, while it was only 4% and 2% in the control group. HAE patients usually had symptoms of digestive system two years after the onset and the incidence at that time was 67%. With the extended course of the disease, the incidence gradually came down. The mechanism of digestive system impairment in HAE was probed and it was shown that treatment of digestive system impairment would promote the healing of HAE.

Demonstration and immunolocalization of ATP diphosphohydrolase in the pig digestive system.

Two isoforms of ATP diphosphohydrolase (ATPDase; EC 3.6.1.5) have been previously characterized, purified, and identified. This enzyme is an ectonucleotidase that catalyzes the sequential release of gamma- and beta-phosphate groups of triphospho- and diphosphonucleosides. One of its putative roles is to modulate the extracellular concentrations of purines in different physiological systems. The purpose of this study was to define, identify, and localize these two isoforms of ATPDase in the pig digestive system. ATPDase activity was measured in pig stomach, duodenum, pancreas, and parotid gland. Enzyme assays, electrophoretograms, and Western blots with a polyclonal antibody that recognizes both isoforms demonstrate the presence of ATPDase in these organs. Immunolocalization showed intense reactions with gastric glands (parietal and chief cells), intestine (columnar epithelial cells), parotid gland, and pancreas. Smooth muscle cells all along the digestive tract were also highly reactive. Considering the variety of purinoceptors associated with the digestive system, the ATPDase is strategically positioned to modulate purine-mediated actions such as electrolyte secretion, glandular secretion, smooth muscle contraction, and blood flow.

[Combined chemotherapy with 5-FU and low dose CDDP for advanced or recurrent cancer of the digestive system and home anti-cancer chemotherapy].

We have performed combined chemotherapy with 5-FU, a biochemical modulator, and low dose CDDP for advanced or recurrent cancer of the digestive system. The therapy was effective in 37% of all cases and in 45.5% and 41.6% of esophageal and gastric cancer cases, respectively. In addition, few patients developed adverse side effects including renal disorders, one of the major side effects of CDDP. Therefore, we considered home anti-cancer chemotherapy feasible. For 27 outpatients with advanced cancer of the digestive system including 15 cases of esophageal cancer, 4 cases of gastric cancer, 3 cases of colon cancer, 4 cases of pancreatic cancer and 1 case of gall bladder cancer, 4 to 6 week home adjuvant chemotherapy was performed. The regimen comprised 1 week of oral administration of 300 mg/body/day of UFT-E granules and 5 days of continuous intravenous infusion of 25 mg/body/day of CDDP using an infusor pump. During the follow-up, 3 cases of catheter obstruction, 3 cases of catheter sepsis and 1 case of pneumothorax appeared. These complications all resulted from the catheter, and safe home anti-cancer chemotherapy could be continued because 5-FU and CDDP did not cause severe side effects.

[Morphofunctional changes in the digestive system of the nematode Passalurus ambiguus (Rudolphi, 1819) after use of the anthelmintics albendazole, fenbendazole, and ivermectin].

The paper presents the results of histological and electron microscopic studies of the tissues of the digestive system of the nematode Passalurus ambiguus (Rudolphi, 1819) after use of the anthelminthics albendazole, fenbendazole, and ivermectine. They demonstrate that albendazole and fenbendazole cause irreversible structural changes. Less pronounced destruction of different parts of the digestive system occurs after the use of ivermectine. All the drugs affect the mid-gut of Passalurus.

The role of vacuolar digestive system in preventing cadmium poisoning in Acanthamoeba castellanii.

Constituents showing cadmium affinity were found in digestive residues of the vacuolar digestive system in Acanthamoeba. Cadmium was detected by means of X-ray analysis in complexes appearing both in residues included within the digestive vacuoles and in those egested outside the cell. The digestive vacuolar system in Acanthamoeba castellanii is characterized by a particularly high turnover rate (4). Confronted with this fact, results of the present study suggest that the system is able to egest rapidly the ligand-bound cadmium. In this way protects the amoeba against serious toxic effects of the Cd-polluted environment.

Endogenous beta-galactosidase activity in amphioxus: a useful histochemical marker for the digestive system.

Endogenous beta-galactosidase activity has been shown in the digestive tract of amphioxus from the larval to the adult stage and it can be easily followed as a histochemical marker. Enzymatic activity first appeared in 30-h larvae, became evident in 36-h larvae and remained in adults. In situ detection of beta-galactosidase activity was used to monitor morphological and functional differentiation of the digestive system and the posteriorization of the endodermal structures in retinoic-acid treated embryos. The endogenous beta-galactosidase activity was distinguished from the bacterial lacZ reporter by incubation at low pH.

[Studies on the anaerobic phased solid digester system for municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment].

Through analyzing and detecting the leaching pollutant (COD) in two bioreactors, anaerobic phased solid digester system and leachate direct-recirculating landfill, the changing rule of municipal solid waste and the characteristics of methanogenesis were studied. The results showed that anaerobic phased solid digester system accelerated the process of degrading municipal solid waste and stabilizing landfill site. The relationship between the leaching pollutant (COD) and refuse age was logarithmic linear correlation. More than 80% of biogas in volume occured in the methanogenisis bioreactor, the methane content in which was 55%-69%. The preferable volumetric COD loading rate of the methanogenisis bioreactor was 6.5-7.5 g/(L x d).

[20 cases of carcinoid tumors of the digestive system].

We are presenting 20 cases of carcinoid tumors of the digestive system. We shall evaluate: age, sex, localization and histopathology, symptomatology, therapeutics and evolution. Appendicular carcinoids were the most frequent: 13 cases. All were chance findings in the histopathological examination of surgically resected appendix in eight acute appendicitis and in four laparotomies for other reasons. Histologically the classic pattern predominated, with formation of cellular nidus, with the cells being argentaffin. These characteristics permit classifying them as tumors derived from the embrionary middle intestine. No appendicular carcinoid developed metastasis. The extirpation was always curative, partially due to the small size and to the facility of obstructing the appendicular lumen. Four cases were gastric carcinoids. Their cells grouped forming trabeculas or were arranged irregularly, being negative for argyrophil and argentic tinction (tumors derived from the cephalic intestine). Two of them presented associated peptic ulcer (histamine implication). The two remaining ones came for studies related to asthenia, anorexia and weight loss, and in both cases hepatic metastasis without carcinoid syndrome were found. Two less frequent localizations were Meckel's diverticulum and ampulla of Vater. The latter developed hepatic metastasis without carcinoid syndrome. The only carcinoid syndrome was found in a patient who died due to adult respiratory distress without having localized the primary tumor.
