Implementation of nutrition care service development plan at Banning Memorial Hospital: a case study.

Health care service markets in general and hospital care service markets in particular are characterized by many competitive developments. Hence, hospital marketing managers are forced to respond to these emerging competitive pressures. However, in formulating appropriate marketing management strategies, hospital managers need to have detailed knowledge about consumers and their behaviors in the marketplace. This paper focuses on the Nutrition Care division of the Department of Nutrition Service at a hospital and its venture into new service development. This case study is intended to emphasize the significance of acquiring adequate knowledge of customers in the health care services industry. It particularly emphasizes the critical role that this type of information concerning customer behavior plays in the development and implementation of an appropriate business expansion strategy. Furthermore, the aim of this case study is to help the reader to relate the acquired marketing information to the problem at hand, and make the appropriate marketing management decision.

Application of modelling in HACCP plan development.

Incorporating Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) in the initial stages of food product development allows for an assessment of the risk and severity of hazards, which may be associated with the raw materials used, their processing, the system of distribution, and the intended use. Implementation of a HACCP plan provides a mechanism to ensure that product safety is continuously achieved. Models developed to predict microbial survival and growth may become an integral tool to evaluate, control, document, and even defend the safety designed into a food product. This paper will examine some current uses of modelling to design critical control parameters and aid in regulatory decisions.

Hospital and medical staff strategic planning: developing an integrated approach.

The physician as the principal customer of the hospital is a relatively new concept, indicative of the shift to a more complete market orientation in strategic planning. Although medical staff and medical community dynamics receive increasing attention in strategic planning, much more sophistication is now needed to involve physicians constructively in strategic planning for the hospital and medical staff. While full consonance of physician and hospital plans may be achievable only in a completely integrated delivery system, there is considerable room for improvement in current organizational models.

Electronic asthma action plan database: asthma action plan development using Microsoft Access.

We created a user-friendly database for use with asthma management consistent with the national guidelines for asthma. A database was designed by using Microsoft Access for the creation of asthma action plans that can be shared between providers caring for patients with asthma. This database and the use of "form entry" improved documentation of asthma action plans, which are increasingly being used to assess appropriateness of care. We currently have 400 asthma action plans in the database. These action plans can be queried to document compliance with accepted best practices. Asthma action plans can be created and stored in an Access database that is both user-friendly and that can be networked to provide more consistent asthma care.
