Effect of a denture adhesive on mandibular denture dislodgment.

The cineradiographic technique was used to assess the retention of complete mandibular dentures during chewing. The study comprised ten complete-denture wearers with severe alveolar ridge resorption in the mandible. Two cineradiographic recordings were performed, with and without a denture adhesive spread onto the base of the mandibular denture. The analysis of the cineradiographic films disclosed a significant decrease in denture dislodgment, expressed as maximal value, when a denture adhesive was used. The mean dislodgment also decreased, but not significantly.

[Mechanical analysis of the denture bases using the photoelastic-coating method. 2. Upper complete denture bases under uniform bending moment load].

Deformation of the anterior teeth and palatal regions on upper complete dentures was investigated using the photoelastic coating method and strain gages. In this experiment, an uniform-moment bending load method was employed to simulate the occlusal situation, and the distribution of strain in epoxy resin, stainless swaged and Co-Cr alloy cast dentures were measured and analyzed. The 030-series reflection polariscope is compact and lightweight with its main components consisting of two polarizer/quarter-wave-plate assemblies attached to a common frame. The highest level of strain was seen in the anterior region of the palate and the low strain was observed in other regions. Differences in strain magnitude of the three dentures were not observed with test at the same point. But, when denture base materials with high flexural rigidity and bending strength were used on the palatal region of the denture base, strain was decreased in the anterior and other regions of the palate. Therefore, dentures using those materials could be effectively reinforced.

[Application of surveyor in designing partial denture. 4. Partial denture designing and preparation of master model for duplication in surveyor].

The article "Partial denture designing and preparation of master model for duplication in surveyor" is the last of four articles from a series which deals with application of surveyor in designing partial denture. The aim of this article is to describe partial denture designed as "step by step method". The operation with the surveyor, which supposes obligatory analysis of stady casts in order to prepare the supporting tissues, determination of the optimal part of denture insertion and finding of 2 heights of contour, gives this concept a biological character. Such designed partial dentures meet the prophylaxis requirements and have desired retention; they are comfortable and look well. As the suggested concept of partial denture design in surveyor represents the present achievements, in the conclusion of this paper its obligatory application is suggested.

Commercial denture cleansers--cleansing efficacy against Candida albicans biofilm and compatibility wit soft denture-lining materials.

Chemical cleansing has been suggested as one of the most effective methods for plaque control, particularly for resilient denture-lining materials. These materials are known to be easily colonized and infected by Candida albicans. Maintaining the cleanliness of such materials is difficult because of porosity and incompatibility with some types of denture cleansers. Therefore, denture cleansers used for soft liners must address both microbiologic and physical requirements. This study evaluated the antifungal efficacy of 11 commercial denture cleansers on C albicans biofilm, studied the compatibility of tissue conditioners with denture cleansers, and makes suggestions for the chemical cleansing of dentures lined with tissue conditioners.

Longitudinal study on forces transmitted from denture base to retainers of lower distal-extension removable partial dentures with conus crown telescopic system.

The purpose of this study was to perform longitudinal measurement of forces transmitted from the denture base to retainers of lower distal-extension removable partial dentures with a conus crown telescopic system. The experimental denture was embedded with a force-detecting unit which could detect a change in lateral and vertical forces transmitted from denture base to retainers at the same time. Forces were measured during chewing of food on several separate occasions from the insertion of new dentures to about 3 months after. Max.ver (maximal mean value of vertical force) and Max.lat (maximal mean value of lateral force) were calculated from the peak level of all strokes of chewing of food at the minimum of the interocclusal distance. The results are summarized as follows: (i) There were no significant changes of Max.ver and Max.lat; (ii) There were no significant differences of Max.ver between subjects the value of which was about 20 N; (iii) There were significant differences of Max.lat between subjects the value of which was less than 15 N.

Observations of denture-supporting tissue during six months of denture adhesive wearing.

The regular use by denture wearers of an appropriate denture adhesive is not associated with any increased incidence in mucosal irritation. The use of such an adhesive can, in fact, reduce the likelihood of the occurrence of tissue irritation and, at the same time, provide the denture wearer with specific benefits--both physical and psychological. The use by 111 denture wearers of a natural gum or a synthetic polymer adhesive for six months was not accompanied by any increase in mucosal irritation of denture bearing tissues. Mucosal irritation present in certain of the subjects at the start of the study was eliminated in almost all cases with the continuing use of the assigned adhesive during the six-month observation period.

The effects of loading locations and direct retainers on the movements of the abutment tooth and denture base of removable partial dentures.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree and amount of movement of the abutment tooth and denture base influenced by the direct retainer of distal extension removable partial denture and the location of functional loading, then to suggest direct retainer design with minimal adverse effect and with optimum functional loading location for residual tissue. The displacement of the abutment tooth and inclination of the denture base were determined, with 30 N as work load utilizing simulation model and strain gauge system, about two types of direct retainers with mesial or distal rest and nine loading points on denture base. Displacement and inclination was determined with the one-way analysis of variance and Scheffe's multiple test was performed. The results revealed that type of direct retainer influenced on the magnitude rather than direction of the abutment tooth displacement. The distal displacement of abutment tooth was significantly less in Type M clasp (with mesial rest and connection) than in Type D clasp (with distal rest and connection) (p<0.05). The location of loading points influenced both of the magnitude and direction of the abutment tooth and denture base movement. Posterior and lingual loading resulted in significantly distal displacement of abutment tooth (p < 0.05).

The effects of denturism on denture prices.

In 1978, the country's first denturism initiative was passed in Oregon, legalizing the independent construction of dentures by non-dentists. The major campaign issue was the effect denturism would have on the cost of dentures. A review of Oregon dental insurance data shows that the costs of dentures, which had been rising at the same rate as other dental services, had a much lower rate of increase after passage of the denturism initiative.

Masticatory efficiency of complete denture patients. A clinical examination of potential changes at the transition from old to new denture.

The masticatory efficiency was studied among 19 complete denture wearers with their old and new dentures. The test chewing material was gelatin hardened by formalin. A standardized preparation of the test chewing material and the sieve-system is described. The patients were tested on seven different occasions from the period with the old dentures until about 1.5 years after the insertion of the new dentures. The test pieces were chewed for ten seconds--a practice test--20 seconds and until ready to be swallowed. The chewed material was strained in a sieve-system and masticatory efficiency indices were calculated. The results revealed no statistical significant differences in masticatory efficiency between any of the seven testing occasions with the method used. Thus no significant difference was noticed when patients changed from old to new dentures or during the first 18 months after insertion of new dentures.

Capacity of denture plaque/biofilm removal and antimicrobial action of a new denture paste.

The efficacy of a paste for complete dentures was analyzed in terms of denture plaque/biofilm removal and antimicrobial action against specific microorganisms by determination of colony forming units of mutans group streptococci and yeast from 120 full denture wearers with a healthy palatine mucosa. The patients were given a questionnaire to evaluate the experimental product in terms of important characteristics. The paste was widely accepted by the patients, and effective in denture plaque removal and antimicrobial action. The species of yeasts most frequently isolated were C. albicans, C. tropicalis and C. glabrata. We conclude that it is possible for complete denture wearers to keep their dentures clean with the regular use of a paste-like hygienic product.

Correlation between quality of life and denture satisfaction in elderly complete denture wearers.

PURPOSE: This study was done to clarify the correlation between the quality of life (QOL), defined as overall satisfaction with daily life, and denture satisfaction in elderly complete denture wearers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A new method for quantifying overall satisfaction with daily life (QOL) among 2,079 elderly people (age > or = 65 years) was developed by evaluating the contribution of 13 factors (eating, health problems, daily exercise, fatigue, sleep quality, smooth communication, physical comfort, aging, loneliness, job and hobbies, meaningfulness, social life, and economic problems) to overall daily life satisfaction by a multiple regression analysis. Then, correlation between the QOL and denture satisfaction was analyzed by the regression model in 84 randomly selected complete denture wearers from the above population. RESULTS: Quantification of the QOL was completed by converting category scores to integers between 0 and 100 for eight highly correlated factors (eating, smooth communication, physical comfort, loneliness, job and hobbies, meaningfulness, social life, and economic problems) to overall satisfaction with daily life (P < 0.01). Significant positive correlation was found between the QOL score and denture satisfaction score (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Edentulous elderly people who are well satisfied with their daily lives are also satisfied with their complete dentures.

Fabrication of a duplicate denture using visible light-polymerized resin as an interim denture base.

This article describes a technique for producing a duplicate denture using a visible light-polymerized (VLP) denture base for support prior to processing. A 2-part mold of the original denture was made, and then a sheet of VLP resin was reduced to a thickness of 0.5 mm and adapted to the fitting surface of the mold to create a denture base. The base was polymerized and the remaining features, such as the teeth and polished surfaces of the denture, were reproduced in wax. This technique may be helpful when performing subsequent clinical and laboratory procedures.

Interim complete immediate dentures for a patient wearing removable partial dentures.

This article describes a technique used for fabricating temporary (interim) complete dentures for a patient who had been wearing removable partial dentures and whose remaining teeth were to be extracted. Rather than attempt to incorporate the existing removable partial dentures into the interim complete dentures, the dentist used the existing dentures to fabricate acrylic resin teeth for the interim prosthesis.

[Clinical study on the prognosis of complete denture wearers covering 10 years. 3. Fitness test of the complete denture base].

The purpose of this study was to estimate the clinical condition of complete denture wearers. 72 patients came to our Dental Hospital according to our recall. The examination consisted of a questionnaire and clinical examinations. For objective evaluation, the fitness test of lower complete denture base was taken place and was classified into four groups by the thickness of the white-silicone film (A-zone 0-30 microns, B-zone 30-70 microns, C-zone 70-130 microns, D-zone 130 microns-). Results 1. The average ratio of four groups of the white-silicone film were A-zone 9.3%, B-zone 35.8%, C-zone 24.5% and D-zone 30.4%. 2. The fitness of anterior portion was ill fit in comparison with posterior portion. 3. There was statistically significant difference between the fitness of lower complete denture and dentist's judgment diagnosed as ill fit denture. 4. There was significant difference between the fitness test and the patients who complained about loose fit of the denture.

[Clinical and technical measures to improve the fit of whole-cast fixed dentures to the denture bed].

Basing on the literature data and their clinical experience, the authors analyze the following factors influencing the union of whole-cast permanent dentures and denture bed: shape of the prepared tooth, use of various types of benches, presence of free space for cement, compensation for the alloy shrinkage, simplification of placing the dentures by perforating the crowns, use of vibration, lesser volumes of cement put into the crown, and various methods of transferring the masticatory pressure to the denture over the course of denture fixation. Practical significance of these factors is estimated.

[A clinical case report of complete dentures using resilient denture liners].

PATIENTS: A man (68 years total edentulous) visited us because of masticatory soreness around the mandible. He also suffered from frequent fracture of the dentures. As the poor fitting and severe absorption of the mandible area was considered to be the main cause of the trouble, soft denture lining materials were used. After trying different types of soft denture liners over the new acrylic base dentures, the dentures were finally relined with fluoroelastomer. DISCUSSION: The condition was good and the patient was very satisfied with the lined dentures. The soft liner contributed to the improvement of the QOL of the edentulous patient. CONCLUSION: The use of soft liner was effective for this difficult edentulous case. This case concerns the guideline for the relining of soft liners.

A SEM study of denture plaque and oral mucosa of denture-related stomatitis.

The aim of this study was to compare the morphology of denture plaque and adjacent palatal mucosa in five subjects with denture-related stomatitis and a control group of five healthy subjects. Scanning electron microscope examination of copper plate replicas, which preliminary studies established were superior to epoxy resin replicas, showed that there were no consistent differences between the morphology of denture plaque and adjacent mucosa in the denture-related stomatitis group and control group. In each, the surface of the denture plaque was composed predominantly of coccoid- and rod-shaped bacteria with only some yeast cells. The mucosa was largely devoid of microorganisms and individual epithelial cells were shedding from its surface.
