Two proteins with ribosome-inactivating, cytotoxic and abortifacient activities from seeds of Luffa cylindrica roem (Cucurbitaceae).

Two immunologically distinct glycoproteins, with a molecular weight of 28,000 and 28,500 respectively, were isolated from seeds of Luffa cylindrica using a procedure that involved acetone precipitation, gel filtration on Sephadex G-75 and ion exchange chromatography on CM-Sepharose CL-6B. The proteins differed in the content of aspartic acid, threonine, proline and alanine but were otherwise similar in amino acid composition. The proteins were capable of inducing mid-term abortion in mice, inhibiting protein synthesis in a cell-free system and suppressing thymidine uptake by human choriocarcinoma cells.

Women and work in rural Taiwan: building a contextual model linking employment and health.

This paper is based on ethnographic research in a rural Taiwanese village in which married women with children are a major source of labor for local industry. Responsibility for job and home exposes these women to repeated stressors that can increase their susceptibility to illness. Existing explanatory models linking employment and women's health, however, do not explain adequately the women's response to their wage labor and the consequences of the social aspects of their work on their health. This paper describes women's work and its meaning, and discusses the way in which micro phenomena such as meanings and health states are linked to macro phenomena such as national political-economic processes and the world capitalist system.

[Effect of levamisole on the cytochemical function of leukocytes and on blood lysozyme in sheep].

It was established in an experiment with 13 sheep of the local improved breed that the single s/c injection of levamisole at the rate of 7.5 mg per kg of body mass led to a rise of the phagocytic activity of neutrophil leukocytes. These cells also had higher cytochemical activity of the alkaline phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase, and lipids (sudanophilia). No changes in the total count of leukocytes were found. The cytochemical activity of lactate-dehydrogenase, succinate-dehydrogenase, and alpha-glycerophosphate-dehydrogenase was also found to rise. On the base of the marker capacity of the acid naphthylacetate esterase with regard to the T-lymphocyte system there set in on the 3rd day following levamisole injection a 4 to 5 rise in the T-lymphocyte count, particularly in the mature T mu-lymphocytes, to the detriment of the B-cells which dropped in number. On the 7th day all these changes receded, however, the percent of lymphocytes with azure granules in the cytoplasm and the average number of these granules per lymphocyte cell rose. In the entire 7-day period of investigation a lowering trend was shown by the amount of serum lysozyme which dropped several times as against the initial level.

[Effect of light deprivation on cytochemical features of visual cortex neurons in rabbit brain].

A cytophotometric measurement of protein concentration and content in the neuronal cytoplasm and in the structures surrounding the neurones was made with the view of studying the plastic properties of units in individual layers of the visual cortex. The data obtained attest that the absence of specific impulse activity from the moment of birth up to 2.5 months brings about a distinct rise of concentration and a drop in protein content along with a decrease of the cytoplasm surface of neurones in layer IV and large pyramides of layer V as well as a decrease of protein concentration in the structures surrounding the neurones in the lower part of layer III, in layer IV and in the area of large pyramids in the layer V. It is suggested that such changes are related to the fact that neurones belong to groups differing in the degree of reactivity of biochemical changes, depending on their functional significance.

Long-term cytologic studies of copper-IUD users.

Cytologic evaluation was carried out in 198 women using copper T-200-mm intrauterine devices (IUDs) for periods ranging from four to eight years. Preinsertional cytology revealed one mild dysplasia; the lesion reverted to normal six months later and has remained normal after five years of copper T contraception. A total of 18 dysplasias (16 mild and 2 moderate) were found in post-IUD-insertion smears during follow-ups after one to eight years of IUD use. Regression of the lesion was noticed in 14 of the 18 within 6 to 12 months with the device in situ. Persistence of the lesion was found in one case and a waxing and waning pattern in two, necessitating removal of the device in all three. In the remaining case, the device was removed due to menopausal menstrual irregularity.
