Developing a health information network within an integrated delivery system: a case study.

Changes in the health care environment, such as the growth of integrated delivery systems and the proliferation of managed care, are having a profound impact on the way in which health care organizations manage both clinical and financial information. Health information networks (HINs) are emerging to support the goals and internal needs of integrated delivery systems. In this environment, health care managers must assume a leadership role in planning for the development of HINs. The article provides an overview of the principal issues that should be addressed in an organization's information systems plan when a HIN is being developed and includes a case study that illustrates the key points discussed.

The evolution of primary care networks.

Many physician practices and primary care networks owned by hospital-based healthcare systems have not been successful financially. By investing capital, time, energy, and management expertise in these networks, however, systems can dramatically improve their strategic advantage. A three-stage evolutionary process that is necessary to achieve this strategic advantage comprises practice acquisition, network development, and true integration. Although few primary care networks run by hospitals or systems to date have reached stage three, understanding the evolutionary process is a necessary first step toward success.

Complementary and alternative medicine--a business opportunity?

This desire for health and well-being is driving the rapid growth of the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) industry and points to a new role for health care professionals, including business opportunities for medical groups. CAM represents the opportunity to grow practice revenues, expand a group's tool kit for assisting patients with health care issues, and retain or increase market share by proactively responding to consumers. With respect to CAM, physician practices can lead their market, follow it or ignore it.

Act No. 89 of 1988 assigning resources to the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare, 29 December 1988.

This Act increases contributions to the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare to 3% of the value of monthly salaries. The increase is to be used exclusively for continued financing of community welfare shelters for infants. These shelters attend to the basic necessities of nutrition, health, protection, and individual and social development of children from the poorest social strata in the country. Further provisions of the Act relate to procedures for payments to the Institute.
