[New cestode, Fimbriarioides tadornae sp. n. from the sheldrake, Tadorna tadorna, and its development in the intermediate host].

A new species of cestodes, Fimbriarioides tadornae sp. n., is described from Tadorna tadorna from the Lake Tengiz (Central Kazakhstan). Artemia salina is an intermediate host of the above cestode. The development of F. tadornae from the oncosphere to the invasional cysticercoid under conditions prevailing in the Lake Tengiz (water salinity of 65% 0, average temperature of 22 degrees C) lasts 12 to 13 days.

[Cestode of the family Hymenolepididae from ducks of Chukotka: Microsomacanthus parasobolevi sp. n.--a widely distributed parasite of eider ducks].

A new species of the genus Microsomacanthus Lopez-Neyra, 1942 is described. The material was collected from eider ducks (Somateria mollissima, S. fischeri, and S. spectabilis) in the Chaunskaya lowland (North-Western Chukotka). Microsomacanthus parasobolevi sp. n. differs from the closest species of this genus (M. polystictae Regel, 1988, M. sobolevi Spassky et Jurpalova, 1964; M. strictophalius Tolkatchieva, 1966) by the structure and size of the copulatory organ. Wide distribution of the new species was detected based on the cestodes collections from eider ducks of the Eastern Chukotka, Lena River mouth (in the museum of the Institute of the Parasitology RAS) and Iceland (Karl Skirnisson's cestode collection of the common eider). Furthermore, this species was reported once of the common eider in Newfoundland and Labrador, but erroneously identified as Hymenglejns (Microsomacanthnis) formosoides Spasskaja et Spassky, 1961 by Bishop and Threlfall (1974).

[The role of alpha-amylase of symbiotic microflora in digestion by lower cestodes and their fish hosts].

The symbiotic microflora associated with the digestive-transport surfaces of the pike intestine and the parasitic cestodes Triaenophorus nodulosus proved capable of the initial stages of carbohydrate hydrolysis mediated by alpha-amylase. The products of hydrolysis by alpha-amylase can be used by both the host and the parasite, which decreases energy expenditures of the macroorganisms. The levels of the bacterial alpha-amylase activity are comparable to those of the analogous enzyme absorbed on the mucosa of the intestine and on the cestode tegument, which indicates a considerable contribution of enzymes of the symbiotic microflora to digestion by the host and the parasite. Apparently, this contribution depends on the fish diet.

Characterization of taeniid cestodes by DNA analysis.

High molecular weight DNA samples free of contaminating proteins and RNA obtained from one isolate (of Guangzhou origin) of Cysticercus tenuicollis and five isolates (of Tianjin, Harbin, Lanzhou, Shenyang and Zhengzhou origin) of Cysticercus cellulosae were subjected to thermal denaturation, restriction endonuclease digestion, Southern blotting and hybridization analysis. C. cellulosae DNA showed a melting temperature (Tm) of 82 degrees C corresponding to a 31% GC content whereas C. tenuicollis DNA melted at 85 degrees C suggesting 38.3% GC content. Visual inspection of ethidium bromide-stained gel showed differences not only between the DNAs of the two species of Taeniid cestodes, but also among the five isolates of C. cellulosae. Furthermore, we used two fragments (1.9kb and 5.5kb) of HindIII-derived restriction fragments of C. cellulosae DNA (Harbin origin) and pTS10 as probes to hybridize the DNAs of the Taeniid cestodes from six origins to detect inter- and intra-species genetic variation, the restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) were identified.

[Distribution of some enzymes in totally stained preparations of cestodes].

The distribution of succinic dehydrogenase, (see article), glucose-6-phosphat-dehydrogenase, alkaline and acid phosphatases and glucose-6-phosphatase was studied by means of the incubation of whole cestodes. Succinic dehydrogenase, NAD-diaphorase and glucose-6-phosphatdehydrogenase are connected in general with the fixating apparatus of the scolex and genital organs; phosphatases -- with the integument tissues, excretory system and calcareous corpuscles. The results obtained are in complete agreement with the available data on the distribution of the enzymes studied. The incubation method of whole cestodes can be useful for field works.

[The hydrolysis and transport of sugars in the cestode Caryophyllaeus laticeps and in the intestines of its host, the bream].

A comparative study of hydrolysis and transport of carbohydrates by the cestode C. laticeps and in the intestine of its host, bream, has revealed a considerable influence of the host's enzymes on the characteristics of the parasite's enzyme system. The cestodes have been found to possess effective transport systems of glucose absorbing it in an active way while in the intestine of bream during the glucose absorption prevail the mechanisms of simple and easy diffusion.

[The characteristics of protein hydrolysis on the digestive-transport surfaces of the cestode Eubothrium rugosum and of the intestines of its host--the burbot].

The functioning of different proteinases hydrolysing proteins in a wide pH range, most of which display activity in the alkaline zone of pH, on the digestive-absorptive surfaces of the parasite and host has been investigated. The dynamics of desorption of these proteinases from the intestine of fishes and tegument of cestodes has been studied. It has been shown that the worms possess less proteolytic activity and less capacity for adsorption of proteinases as compared to the intestines of their hosts. The dependence of proteolytic activity of desorbed fractions on the incubation medium temperature has been noted: with the increase in temperature the enzymes, bound closely with the membranes, increase their capacity to hydrolyse proteins. The predominance in cestodes, as compared to the intestine, of easily desorbed fractions D1 and D2 (in the percent ratio of the total proteolytic activity of all fractions) has been detected.

[Carbohydrate transport in the cestode Triaenophorus nodulosus].

The data demonstrating the presence of the glucose active transport system in the cestode T. nodulosus are obtained. Kinetic characteristics of the transport are estimated and their dependence on the incubation temperature are shown. Heterogeneity of the worm body in respect to transport processes and their dependence on the physiological state of cestodes are discovered. The absorption of different forms of glucose is studied and the similarity of digestion processes in parasites and their hosts is shown.

[Cestode lysosomes].

By differential centrifugation method a lysosomal fraction was obtained from five species of cestodes, which possesses the highest specific activity of acidic phosphatases as compared to other subcellular fractions. By isopyknic centrifugation in the density gradient of saccharose the lysosomal fraction is divided into primary and secondary lysosomes. Lysosomes of cestodes are similar to those of vertebrate animals in the character of fractional distribution of acidic phosphatase, sedimentation abilities and sensitivity of membranes to triton X-100.

Superoxide dismutase in cestodes. Isoenzymatic characterization and studies of inhibition by a series of benzimidazoles and by pyrimidine derivatives of recent synthesis.

The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) (E.C.1.15.1.1) in extracts of five cestode parasites (Moniezia expansa, M. benedeni, Avitellina centripunctata. Taenia hydatigena and Dipylidium caninum) were investigated. The polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterns revealed that each of the five species had four isoenzyme bands; they could be differentiated principally by their displacements and, less clearly, by their intensities. Determinations were made of the inhibitory activities of four benzimidazoles and six recently synthesised pyrimidine derivatives on the SOD enzymes from the cestodes. The results confirm that the percentage of inhibitions of SOD by the same pyrimidine derivatives are markedly superior to those of the benzimidazoles.

[A human infection of the cestode, Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense Yamane et al., 1986].

A mature cestode, obtained from a 49-year-old man in Fukuoka, southern Japan, was examined. The worm was about 70 cm in length without scolex. The largest segment was 1.8 x 0.8 cm. Cirrus sac lay at an obtuse angle (about 150 degrees) to seminal vesicle. The eggs were 62.06 +/- 9.40 x 43.33 +/- 6.43 microns and the shell thickness 1.0-1.5 microns, with round, shallow and sparsely distributed surface pits ranging 0.8-2.0 microns in diameter. The above features suggested that this worm was identified as the cestode, Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense.

[In vivo inhibition by ethyloxanilates of alkaline phosphatases of the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis].

Alkaline phosphatases (E.C.3.1.3.1), membranous enzymes of the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis have been studied in the parasite and in the experimental host liver. Synthetic inhibitors interaction with metacestode alkaline phosphatases is reported. In regard to the alkaline phosphatases inhibition, the ethyloxanilate 2 is more efficient in the cestode itself than in the host liver.

[The agglutination test of coracidia of pseudophyllidean cestodes and its use in cestodological research].

Ability of coracidia to agglutination in homologous antiserum was established. The method of reaction of a direct agglutination of coracidia (RDAC) in the culture of alive larvae was described. When comparing the RDAC results in homologous and heterologous variants a dependence of the agglutination pattern on the degree of antiserum homology was established. On the example of RDAC of the cestodes Diphyllobothrium dendriticum and D. ditremum in polyvalent and species-specific antisera to D. dendriticum possibility was shown of RDAC usage in the studies on specific taxonomy of pseudophyllid cestodes.

[A study on the tegument and sensory receptors of the scolex of a tetraphyllidean cestode plerocercoid, by transmission and scanning electron microscopy (author's transl)].

The ultrastructure of bothridia and the myzorhynchus of a tetraphyllidean cestode plerocercoid is described. Two types of microtriches occur on the tegument of these organs. On the bothridium, the microtriches are lanceolated whereas on the mizorhynchus, they are filamentous. Uniciliated sensory receptors, which consist of a basal bulb contaning one or two electron-dense collars, are observed especially on the bothridia and myzorhynchus. A papilla is also described on the tegument. According to the present study, it is suggested that the rostellum of cyclophyllidean cestodes and the myzorhynchus of the tetraphyllideans are homologous. Moreover, the role in the attachment and sensory perception of the myzorhynchus is revealed.

[2 rules for the life cycles of cestodes in the ecosystem].

Rule I: The more advanced in its primary evolution the life cycle of a cestode is, the greater is the participation of the animal component of the ecosystem in it. The direct influence of the non-living component of the ecosystem on the course of the cycle is one and the same with both the primarily evolved 2-host and 3-host life cycles within the separate orders. Rule II: In the secondarily evolved life cycles of cestodes, when compared with their initial life cycles, the following things are observed: a) either a decrease of both the participation of the animal component of the ecosystem in the life cycle and the direct influence of the non-living component of the ecosystem on the course of the cycle; b) or a decrease only of the participation of the animal component of the ecosystem in the life cycle, without any change in the direct influence of the non-living component of the ecosystem on the course of the cycle; c) or, quite rarely, a decrease only of the direct influence of the non-living component of the ecosystem on the course of the life cycle, without any change in the participation of the animal component of the ecosystem in the life cycle.
