With or against nature? IVF, gender and reproductive agency in Athens, Greece.

Based on ethnographic research in Athens, this paper argues that in vitro fertilization (IVF) in urban Greece does not so much make explicit the social construction of nature, as has been argued of the US and UK, but is accommodated into a prior understanding of "nature" as socially realized. Calling upon an ethic of maternal sacrifice, Athenian women see themselves taking charge of a natural process, often correcting damage done to them by nature. A sense that adults should produce children in order to realize their natures and be completed as women and men also poses particular, and gendered, ethical questions of fertility technologies: is this a proper way of realizing nature? While those who successfully use IVF depict assisted conception as "a natural" and "proper way of reproduction," some fear that others will view their child as abnormal. Contests over "normal" reproduction are articulated to a tradition/modernity dichotomy which Athenians discuss through an idiom of maturity. Believing that Greek society is not always mature enough to understand how natural IVF really is, couples turning to IVF follow one of the two strategies: to educate others or to completely hide it. Both groups want to guard against a view of IVF-in the terms of this volume-as a kind of "reproduction gone awry."

The evolving epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease: a two-year prospective, population-based study in children in the area of Athens.

In response to an increase in the incidence in invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) due to Neisseria meningitidis, a system of hospital- and laboratory-based surveillance was used in a prospective epidemiological and clinical assessment of IMD in children 0-13 years of age hospitalized in the Athens area between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2000. The annual incidence of laboratory-confirmed disease was 10.2/100,000. Serogroup B strains were predominant. There was a sharp decrease in serogroup C from 19% of cases in 1999 to 3% in 2000 (P=0.013). Of note was the emergence of serogroup A responsible for 7% of the cases. The overall case fatality rate was 4.5%, but 2.8% for microbiologically confirmed cases. A remarkable decrease in disease severity assessed by admissions to intensive care units was noted during the second study year. Polymerase chain reaction-based methods for detection of meningococcal DNA were the sole positive laboratory test in 45% of the cases and the only test on which serogroup determination was based in 52% of groupable cases. The epidemiological and clinical profile of meningococcal disease appears to be rapidly evolving and close monitoring is required particularly for input into decisions regarding use of meningococcal vaccines.

Seroepidemiological study of HBV infections in Athens, Greece.

A seroepidemiological survey of a sample-roughly representative by age and sex - of 2744 persons of the Greater Athens area revealed that hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections are highly endemic in Greece. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was detected in 72(2-6%) of them. The subtype was identified in 70 of the 72 carriers, and 69 were ay; the other was ad. Determinant w was present in all 61 that were capable of being typed further, and a23y(w) was twice as common as a11y(w). Antibody to HBsAg (anti-HBs) was found in 514 (18-7%) persons. The prevalence of the HBsAg rose rapidly with age, reaching peak values (5-3%) at 20-29 years, while anti-HBs reached its highest value (42-1%) in older age groups (50-59 years). The frequency of HBsAg was significantly higher in males (3-4%) than in females (1-5%). The percentage of infected persons who become chronic HBsAg carriers (12-3%) was found higher than in other developed populations. It was also found higher in children (25%) than in adults (5-5%) and in males (14-6%) than in females (8-1%). These data indicate that HBV infection in early life is a major risk factor in the development of HBsAg carriers and support the hypothesis that males are more likely to become HBsAg carriers than females.

Evaluation of standardized scored inspections for Legionnaires' disease prevention, during the Athens 2004 Olympics.

The study was designed to determine the contribution of standardized scored inspections implemented during the Athens 2004 Pre-Olympic and Olympic period, in assessing the presence of Legionella spp. in water sites. Inspection grading scores of 477 water supply systems, 127 cooling towers and 134 decorative fountains were associated with the corresponding microbiological test results of 2514 samples for Legionella spp. Nine violations of water supply systems and nine of cooling towers significantly associated with positive microbiological test results, and four violations of water supply systems and one of cooling towers were among those designated as 'critical' water safety hazards in the inspection reports. The study documents a strong correlation [water supply systems (RR 1.92), cooling towers (RR 1.94)] between unsatisfactory inspection scoring results and Legionella-positive microbiological test results (in excess of 10,000 c.f.u./l) and suggests the utility of inspection scoring systems in predicting Legionella proliferation of water systems and in preventing Legionnaires' disease.

Comparison of ozone levels between working days and weekends in Athens, Greece.

Athens has a major problem of ozone air pollution due to its climate which is dominated by hot and dry summers with intense sunshine. As a result there is a high violation of the air quality limits of ozone. By comparing ozone air pollution between weekdays and weekends it is possible to estimate the effect of the reduction of primary pollutants causing the formation of ozone on the levels of this pollutant. Thus it was estimated that while during the weekends the concentrations of the ozone precursors (nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds) were reduced by the order of 10-20%, the effect on ozone levels was lower.

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat: spontaneous expressions of medal winners of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Facial behaviors of medal winners of the judo competition at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games were coded with P. Ekman and W. V. Friesen's (1978) Facial Affect Coding System (FACS) and interpreted using their Emotion FACS dictionary. Winners' spontaneous expressions were captured immediately when they completed medal matches, when they received their medal from a dignitary, and when they posed on the podium. The 84 athletes who contributed expressions came from 35 countries. The findings strongly supported the notion that expressions occur in relation to emotionally evocative contexts in people of all cultures, that these expressions correspond to the facial expressions of emotion considered to be universal, that expressions provide information that can reliably differentiate the antecedent situations that produced them, and that expressions that occur without inhibition are different than those that occur in social and interactive settings.

The rattling sound of rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis) as a communicative resource for ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) and burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia).

Animal communication involves very dynamic processes that can generate new uses and functions for established communicative activities. In this article, the authors describe how an aposematic signal, the rattling sound of rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis), has been exploited by 2 ecological associates of rattlesnakes: (a) California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) use incidental acoustic cues in rattling sounds to assess the danger posed by the rattling snake, and (b) burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) defend themselves against mammalian predators by mimicking the sound of rattling. The remarkable similarity between the burrowing owl's defensive hiss and the rattlesnake's rattling reflects both exaptation and adaptation. Such exploitation of the rattling sound has favored alternations in both the structure and the deployment of rattling by rattlesnakes.

Post traumatic paraplegics living in Athens: the impact of pressure sores and UTIs on everyday life activities.

This paper contains the findings of a scientific research which was done on post-traumatic paraplegics who live in the area of Athens. Greece, and measured the impact of pressure sores and UTIs on their everyday life activities. The target population was 127 individuals out of which 98 were observed and interviewed. A semi-structured questionnaire which consisted of two parts used; the first part of the questionnaire included general questions whereas the second contained the Sarno Functional Life Scale (SFLS) which is a tool measuring the level of independence of disabled people. Sixty-two per cent of the population was male. The mean age of the sample population at the time they had the accident which caused the paraplegia was 31.5, while the median was 28.5. The majority of the subjects comes from the lower socioeconomic class. Traffic accidents accounted for the 55% of the occurrences of paraplegia, falls for 37%, surgical complication for 4% and athletic activities for the remaining 4%. Forty-nine percent of the sample had been hospitalised in a rehabilitation centre. However, the multiple regressions used did not reveal any statistically significant relation between the hospitalisation in a rehabilitation centre and the paraplegic's scores in any of the Sarno Functional Life Scale's (SFLS) variables. Instead, the multiple regressions employed yielded paraplegics' scores in the SFLS's everyday life activities that were negatively related to age (P = 0.004) and pressure sores (P = 0.021). The paraplegics' scores on the SFLS's indoors activities are positively related to the years since injury (P = 0.048) and health education on daily fluid consumption (P = 0.003). The scores of the subjects on the SFLS's outdoor activities are positively related to the years of education (P = 0.008), the years since injury (P = 0.011), while are negatively related to pressure sores (P = 0.034) and UTIs (0.044). The subjects' scores on the SFLS variables regarding social relations had a negative relation to sex, (female) (P = 0.0001), age (P = 0.001) and pressure sores (P = 0.019), while they have a positive relation with the years since injury (P = 0.024).

Isolation rate, T-serotyping and susceptibility to antibiotics of Group A Streptococcus from pediatric infections in Athens.

OBJECTIVE: The epidemiology of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) in Greece is not known. We have therefore conducted this prospective study to investigate the isolation rate of GAS from pediatric specimens, determine T-serotype frequency and examine the susceptibility of GAS to penicillin, erythromycin and clindamycin. METHODS: Over a 3-year study-period (1993-95) 11 597 clinical specimens obtained from sick children were inoculated on appropriate culture media. The isolation and identification of GAS strains were assessed by conventional methods. T-typing was performed by slide agglutination. Serum opacity factor (OF) was detected by microwell METHOD: The susceptibility of the strains was tested by the Kirby Bauer method. RESULTS: GAS were isolated from 1125 out of 11 597 (9.7%) clinical specimens, mostly from throat samples (15.6%). T-serotyping was performed in 652 GAS strains. A significant difference of the incidence of T-serotypes was observed within the 3 years studied (chi2 = 70.3, DF = 18, P < 0.001). The most dominant isolates were T-1 (25%), T-4 (20%) and T-12 (16%) during 1993, 1994 and 1995, respectively. Non-typeable (NT) strains were 4%. OF and hyaluronic acid were produced from 49.8% and 3% of the strains, respectively. All isolated strains were susceptible to penicillin and clindamycin. Resistance to erythromycin was 5.0-8.7% over the 3-year study period. CONCLUSIONS: There was a wide distribution of GAS T-serotypes in Athens and a significant change in their annual predominance. All strains were susceptible to penicillin and clindamycin, but a low level of erythromycin resistance was observed.

An epidemiological study of headaches among medical students in Athens.

In order to study the prevalence of frequent headaches among the medical students of Athens University, an epidemiological survey was carried out among 588 medical students (318 men and 270 women), with mean age 23.5 years. Two questionnaires were designed for the study: one general, consisting of 10 questions and a second one, specific for headache sufferers, consisting of 117 questions. All those with headache who voluntarily completed the two questionnaires also underwent a neurological examination. Thirty point eight percent of men and 50.3% of women reported various headache attacks during the previous 6 months (39.6% in both sexes). However, only the 11.9% of students (from both sexes) reported that they suffered from disturbing headaches. The 6-month prevalence of migraine was 2.4% and 9.5% for tension-type headache (in both sexes). Cluster headache was not traced. The prevalence of nonclassifiable headaches (according to the criteria of the International Headache Society) was 0.85%. Headache was correlated to sex (more frequent among women) and anxiety level (Hamilton scale for anxiety). Headache prevalence was not correlated to smoking and social class.

The occurrence of disinfection by-products in the drinking water of Athens, Greece.

Application of chlorination for the disinfection of drinking water results in the formation of a wide range of organic compounds, called disinfection by-products (DBPs), which occur due to the reaction of chlorine with natural organic materials. The occurrence of DBPs was studied in samples from four drinking-water treatment plants (WTPs) and from the distribution network of Athens, Greece. Twenty-four compounds, which belong to different categories of DBPs, were monitored, including trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), haloketones (HAKs), chloral hydrate (CH) and chloropicrin (CP). Sampling was performed monthly for a period of two years, from three different points at each WTP and from eight points atthe distribution network. Samples were analyzed by GC-ECD methods, which included pretreatment with liquid-liquid extraction for volatile DBPs and acidic methanol esterification for HAAs. The results of the analyses have shown the presence of disinfection by-products belonging to all categories studied in all water samples collected after prechlorination. The major categories of DBPs detected were THMs and HAAs, while the other volatile DBPs occurred at lower concentrations. The concentrations of DBPs did not in any case exceed the maximum contaminant levels (MCL) set by USEPA and WHO. However, monitoring these compounds needs to be continued, because their levels could increase due to changes in the quality of water entering the water treatment plants. Reduction of the concentrations of DBPs could be achieved by optimization of the chlorination conditions, taking into account the effect of time. Moreover, research on alternative disinfection methods (e.g. ozone, chlorine dioxide, chloramines) and their by-products should be conducted to evaluate their applicability in the case of the drinking water of Greece.

Long-term variation in surface ozone and its precursors in Athens, Greece: a forecasting tool.

INTENTION, GOAL, SCOPE, BACKGROUND: Photochemical pollution is a very complex process involving meteorological, topographic, emission and chemical parameters. The most important chemical mechanisms involved in the atmospheric process have already been identified and studied. However, many unknown parameters still exist because of the large number of participating chemical reactions. OBJECTIVE: The present study investigates the processes involved in the photochemical pollution effect of an urban station located in the greater area of the Athens basin and gives a plausible explanation for the different seasonal ozone development between that station and another rural one. Furthermore, the distribution of the mean monthly surface ozone observed at the urban station during 1987-2001 is examined in order to create a relevant forecasting tool. METHODS: Averaged hourly data of O3 and NOx observations monitored at the above mentioned stations, during 1987-2001, have been used in order to derive the daytime (7:00-15:00) values. Trajectories calculated by using a 2D-trajectory code and meteorological data, during the period 1988-1996, have also been used. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: At the urban station, the percentage negative trend of NO and NOx data in winter and summer is higher than that in spring and autumn, while the percentage ozone trend is maximum in the summer. On the contrary, the negative surface ozone trend at the rural station exhibits a minimum in summer and a maximum in autumn and winter. The mean seasonal wind-rose for the selected months shows that the northward wind flow dominates during June, the month of the lowest negative ozone trend in the rural station. Finally, the development of the forecasting tool shows that the mean monthly surface ozone data during the period (1987-2001) demonstrates a semi-log distribution. CONCLUSIONS: Air transport effect on the air pollution of the rural station (not blocked by mountains) is deduced as a possible reason for the different seasonal ozone development observed between the rural and the urban station. Finally, the discrepancies between the theoretical probabilities deduced by the model and the empirical ones appear to be very small, and the corresponding correlation coefficient is 0.99. RECOMMENDATION AND OUTLOOK: However, to interpret the aforementioned statistical results about the negative trends in ozone and its precursors, additional parameters can be taken into account. Changes in NOx concentrations, for instance, can result not only from changes in emissions or meteorological conditions. There might also be a contribution through changes in the atmospheric composition. A study of the contribution of changes in atmospheric composition to trends of observed NOx concentrations requires that a series of steps be taken (removal of meteorological influence in the time series, calculation of trends in OH concentrations, etc.).

Management of bilateral vocal fold paralysis: experience at the University of Athens.

The treatment of patients with vocal fold paralysis presents a challenge to the otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon. Many techniques have been proposed to manage individuals with unilateral or bilateral vocal fold paralysis. We herein describe the experience of our department in dealing with bilateral vocal fold paralysis. At the University of Athens, patients presenting with symptomatic bilateral paralysis are treated with a posterior cordectomy by using the CO2 or KTP-532 laser. During the last 5 years, we have treated 20 patients (8 men and 12 women) presenting with symptomatic bilateral vocal fold paralysis. For augmentation of the glottic airway, a modification of Kashima's cordotomy was used, completing a partial posterior cordectomy of one or both true and false vocal folds with the CO2 laser (15 patients) and the KTP-532 laser (5 patients). An elective tracheotomy was done before the cordotomy. Complications, such as infection, stridor, or dyspnea, were minimal. Although no objective voice analysis was performed, all patients were able to communicate without any phonation device and were satisfied with the result of the surgery. When compared with other techniques, the advantages offered by the posterior cordectomy included rapidity and simplicity in concept, reliability of outcome, short hospitalization, low risk of complications, and the possibility for revision when necessary (posterior cordectomy). From the successful postsurgical results of this study, it can be concluded that the posterior cordectomy is a reliable treatment option for the management of patients with bilateral vocal fold paralysis.

Leishmaniasis in greater Athens, Greece. Entomological studies.

Greater Athens, the largest urban area in Greece, has a population of 3.1 million and is home for most of the human and canine cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) reported in Greece. Seven species of sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were identified in light- and sticky-trap surveys in the area in 1993. Although none of the flies was found in wooded areas or scrub, flies were collected from quarries, corrals, wells, walls, houses and animal shelters. There were small 'island' populations in residential districts and moderate or large populations in the quarries and corrals in the foothills of the mountains bordering the area and in the hills near the city centre. Phlebotomus neglectus, the putative vector of VL in the area, was ubiquitous; it predominated in the quarries and was common in the sampled corrals and residential habitats. The distribution, abundance and seasonal activity of all seven species of sandflies are described and discussed.

Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Athens atmosphere.

Concentrations of total suspended particulates (TSP), benzene soluble fraction (BSF) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) have been determined in ambient air from four different sites in Athens, situated in urban, semi-industrial and industrial areas. GLC analysis has been applied for the determination of PAH, while the CGC/MS technique was used in order to confirm the obtained results. The same PAH pattern was observed for all stations. The identified PAH have been fluoranthene (FLA), pyrene (PYR), benzo(a)anthracene (BaA), chrysene (CHR), benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF), benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), benzo(e)pyrene (BeP) and benzo(ghi)perylene (B(ghi)P). The concentrations of individual PAH ranged from traces to 33 ng m-3 (e.g. same or lower comparing to other large cities). The higher values of PAH were found during adverse meteorological conditions.

Comparison of air pollutant concentrations between weekdays and weekends in Athens, Greece for various meteorological conditions.

The objective of the present study is to contribute to the understanding of the "ozone weekend effect" as it occurs in the Greater Area of Athens, Greece both in the summer and wintertime. Therefore, weekly cycles of CO, NO and O3 concentrations for the 18-year-period 1983-2000 are studied. Each day of the week is considered separately, while sites with different levels of primary pollutants are examined. The reduction of the meteorological influence in the O3 mechanisms is achieved by applying meteorological classifications. The analysis for the cold period reveals that CO and NO display decreasing concentrations from weekdays to weekends, whereas O3 shows increasing concentrations. During the warm period, although primary pollutants display decreased concentrations compared to the cold period, their weekly cycles remain the same. On the other hand, meteorological changes affect the weekly cycle of ozone peaks. During days with unfavourable meteorology to ozone production, weekend ozone concentrations are higher than weekday O3 concentrations. The reverse is observed during days with favourable meteorology to ozone production.

Identifying nutritionally vulnerable groups in case of emergencies: experience from the Athens 1999 earthquake.

During emergency situations in developing countries, young children have been identified as the most nutritionally vulnerable group. Comparatively less is known regarding nutritional risk of individuals in well-nourished societies hit by a major disaster. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to assess the nutritional status of Greek people who were left homeless after the Athens 1999 earthquake. A total of 225 volunteers from two camps were surveyed for dietary intake information and surrogate measures of nutritional status. Energy consumption and anthropometric indices of the children and adolescents revealed no sign of undernourishment. On the other hand, adults and the elderly consumed considerably less energy than that required for long-term preservation of health. Short-term energy and protein deficits, however, did not jeopardise their nutritional status as it might have expected, on the basis of high body mass indexes and normal haematological and biochemical profiles that were documented. In conclusion, the results of the present study indicate that nutritional risk in the acute phase after a major emergency in a previously well-nourished population is rather low. This is especially true for younger individuals, probably due to increased provision from the family and the community. Nevertheless, older persons may face increased risk as the situation is prolonged.

Summertime measurements of benzene and toluene in Athens using a differential optical absorption spectroscopy system.

In this paper, measurements of benzene, toluene, p,m-xylene, ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) made using the differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) technique during a 4-month period of summer 2000 (June-September) in Athens, Greece, are presented. An assessment of benzene mean value concentrations during this 4-month period exceeded 10 microg/m3, which is 2 times greater than the average yearly limit proposed by European authorities. Toluene measurements present mean values of approximately 33 microg/m3. Benzene and especially toluene measurements are highly correlated with NO2 and anticorrelated with O3. High values of benzene, NO2, and toluene are also correlated with winds from the southeast section, an area of industrial activity where emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been recorded in previous studies. O3 is correlated with winds from the south-southwest section affected by the sea breeze circulation. Diurnal variations of O3, NO2, and SO2 concentrations are compatible with measurements from the stations of the Ministry of Environment's network. Outliers are combined with weak winds from the south-southwest. As far as p,m-xylene measurements are concerned, there is a poor correlation between gas chromatography (GC) and DOAS Opsis measurements, also observed in previous relevant campaigns and eventually a criticism in the use of the DOAS Opsis model for the measurement of p,m-xylene.
