[Mullerian adenosarcoma of the uterus. Review of the literature. Apropos of a case].

The authors report a case of müllerian adenosarcoma in an 86 year old woman. This tumor is characterized by the association of proliferative benign epithelium with a sarcomatous mesenchyma. It was described for the first time in 1974 by Clement and Scully. It is a cancer of decreased malignancy, revealed either by isolated metrorrhagias, or by an increase of the size of the uterus in a post-menopausal woman. Its course shows the occurrence of local recurrences and pulmonary or peritoneal metastases. The only appropriate treatment is total abdominal hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy.

Intramural müllerian adenosarcoma of the uterus with adenomyosis.

We studied a case of intramural müllerian adenosarcoma of the uterus in a 51-year-old woman. The tumor measured 4 cm in diameter, was located in the lateral wall of the uterine body, and was accompanied by adenomyosis. The tumor was composed of glands with no epithelial cell atypia and a sarcomatous component evidenced by cell pleomorphism and a high mitotic count. The ratios of mitotic cells to glandular cells in the tumor, in the overlying endometrium in proliferative phase, and in the adenomyomatous tissue, were 5:10,000, 20:10,000, and less than 1:10,000, respectively. These observations seem to indicate that the glandular component of the tumor is a benign, neoplastic part, and the present tumor developed in a preexisting endometriotic focus.

Uterine Müllerian adenosarcoma with psammoma bodies: cytologic, histologic and ultrastructural studies of a case.

Epithelial cells associated with psammoma bodies and undifferentiated sarcomatous tumor cells were found in peritoneal washings obtained during laparotomy for removal of metastatic lesions from a uterine stromal sarcoma. Histologic studies of the primary and recurrent tumors showed characteristics of Müllerian adenosarcoma. The cytologic, histologic and ultrastructural features are described.

[Adenosarcoma of the uterus. Review of the literature. A case report].

Adenosarcoma is a rare tumour of the uterus which contains normal benign epithelial cells together with sarcomatous over-growth of the stroma. The tumour is an intracavitary one which gives rise to bleeding but has a relatively favourable prognosis because it has a low degree of malignancy.
