A mechanism of light adaptation.

In the isolated retina of the bullfrog (Rana catesbiana) illumination of one part of a ganglion cell's receptive field increased the light threshold (for response by that cell) not only in the illuminated part but also in the unilluminated parts of the field. Scattered light is insufficient to account for the effect. Apparently it depends on changes in the efficiency of excitation transmission along the neural pathways from photoreceptors to ganglion cell.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN VISUAL CELLS IN THE OMMATIDIUM OF LIMULUS.

When microelectrodes are inserted in two cells of the same ommatidium in Limulus, current applied through the membrane of one cell produces a change in potential across the membrane of both cells. The large spikes recorded from one cell and the small spikes recorded from the other always appear synchronously. However, the small spikes are abolished selectively during the hyperpolarizing response. The discrete waves recorded from eyes adapted to darkness occur simultaneously in cells of the same ommatidium.

ADAPTATION TO PRISMATICALLY ROTATED VISUAL FIELDS.

The aftereffects of viewing a tilted field of lines differ from the effects of viewing a tilted field of objects. The difference is attributed to the fact that unlike isolated lines, objects have specifiable normal orientations.
