STUDIES ON HUMAN ANTIBODIES. II. DISTRIBUTION OF GENETIC FACTORS.

Human antibodies against dextran, teichoic acid, blood group A substance, levan, tetanus toxoid, and nuclei were isolated and analyzed for their content of Gm(a), Gm(b), and Inv(a) gamma-globulin genetic factors. The majority of these antibodies contained all the genetic factors determined in the donor's whole gamma-globulin, but in many antibodies at very different concentrations. In a few instances specific factors could not be detected despite their presence in the individual's whole gamma-globulin. Different antibodies isolated from the serum of the same individual showed different relative concentrations of genetic factors. The distribution of genetic factors seen in certain isolated human antibodies appeared to approach the selective occurrence of these factors in myeloma proteins.

[Genetic screening for markers of individual sensitivity to the action of biological factors].

HLA and ABO genetic markers were determined in 406 workers exposed to occupational and ecologic specific factors of industrial biotechnology. The study proved the importance of genotype in determination of individual sensitivity to those factors. The genetic markers of hypersensitivity and resistance were revealed. A medical and genetic concept was suggested for primary prophylaxis of occupational and ecologic diseases.

A study of total serum alkaline phosphatase activity in men following partial gastrectomy.

Total serum alkaline phosphatase (SAP) activity has been measured in 463 men with partial gastrectomy (Polya type), and in a control group of 271 men with vagotomy with pyloroplasty or gastroenterostomy. An analysis of variance of the values in the range of 3.0 to 11.5 KA units/100 ml showed that the enzyme serum activity is influenced by three independent factors: age, ABO blood group, and the type of operation. Marginally raised levels (12.0-17.0 KA units/100 ml) were found to be affected by the same factors, and it was concluded that these levels do not, usually, indicate either bone or liver disease. In 18 men the total serum alkaline phosphatase was over 17.0 KA units: 16 had Paget's disease of bone, and two had liver disease.
