Neural nets for generalization and classification: comment on Staddon and Reid (1990)

The neural net model of Staddon and Reid (1990) explains exponential and Gaussian generalization gradients in the same way as the diffusion model of Shepard (1958). The "cognitive" generalization theory of Shepard (1987), which also has been implemented as a connectionist network, goes beyond both of these models in accounting for classification learning.

Health-as-process: a health visiting perspective.

Health visitors are community nurses who define their role specifically in terms of health promotion, although they have often found difficulty in explaining how their seemingly diffuse and unfocused practice achieves this. The grounded theory study reported here set out to uncover some of the hidden processes and features embedded within health visiting, so the practice might be more clearly articulated. This paper reports one aspect of that study, which suggests that health visitors treat health as a lifelong process, involving the accumulation and use of 'resources for health'. The relevance of approaches which appeared both caring and educational will be set in the context of therapeutic nursing and adult education theories. Historically, health visitors have links with both nursing and health education; the analysis presented here helps to clarify the relationships between these different areas of work. The paper will explain how treating health as a process allows multiple competing views and ideas about health and health promotion to be integrated into a manageable form, thus allowing positive health to be promoted within a broad, acceptable socio-cultural context. However, the analysis also highlighted various points at which treating health as a process contradicts the firmly measurable requirements of the market-orientated health service. Nevertheless, where health visitors are sufficiently skilled, and are permitted by their employing authorities to use this approach, it may serve to protect clients from intrusive and accusing interventions, made in the name of health promotion.

Theoretical investigation of the linear and second-order nonlinear susceptibilities of the 3-methyl-4-nitropyridine-1-oxyde (POM) crystal.

The linear and nonlinear optical properties of the 3-methyl-4-nitropyridine-1-oxyde (POM) crystal have been evaluated using semiempirical quantum chemistry techniques. The scheme includes (i) the evaluation of the polarizability and first hyperpolarizability of increasingly large one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional clusters of POM, (ii) the use of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach to determine the static and dynamic responses in combination with semiempirical Austin model 1 Hamiltonian, (iii) the assessment, for the POM monomer and dimer, of the electron correlation effects using second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory with several basis sets containing polarization and diffuse functions, (iv) the assessment of the validity of the multiplicative scheme and its application to get effective polarizability and first hyperpolarizability of the POM unit cell in the crystal, (v) the use of a sum-over-states approach to attribute the first hyperpolarizability to a dominant charge-transfer excited state, and (vi) comparison with experimental data as well as with calculated values obtained using the oriented gas approximation.

Water properties from first principles: simulations by a general-purpose quantum mechanical polarizable force field.

We have recently introduced a quantum mechanical polarizable force field (QMPFF) fitted solely to high-level quantum mechanical data for simulations of biomolecular systems. Here, we present an improved form of the force field, QMPFF2, and apply it to simulations of liquid water. The results of the simulations show excellent agreement with a variety of experimental thermodynamic and structural data, as good or better than that provided by specialized water potentials. In particular, QMPFF2 is the only ab initio force field to accurately reproduce the anomalous temperature dependence of water density to our knowledge. The ability of the same force field to successfully simulate the properties of both organic molecules and water suggests it will be useful for simulations of proteins and protein-ligand interactions in the aqueous environment.

The calculation of transport properties in quantum liquids using the maximum entropy numerical analytic continuation method: application to liquid para-hydrogen.

We present a method based on augmenting an exact relation between a frequency-dependent diffusion constant and the imaginary time velocity autocorrelation function, combined with the maximum entropy numerical analytic continuation approach to study transport properties in quantum liquids. The method is applied to the case of liquid para-hydrogen at two thermodynamic state points: a liquid near the triple point and a high-temperature liquid. Good agreement for the self-diffusion constant and for the real-time velocity autocorrelation function is obtained in comparison to experimental measurements and other theoretical predictions. Improvement of the methodology and future applications are discussed.

Dynamics of fluorescence polarization in macromolecules.

Reexamination of the theory of fluorescence time dependence owing to rotational diffusion of rigid macromolecules reveals deficiencies or hidden restrictions in each of the previous treatments. The correct master equation has five exponential decay terms, with preexponential factors that depend upon the diffusion constants and, in a completely symmetrical fashion, upon the orientations of absorbing and emitting dipoles.

Ultrasonic tagging of light: theory.

A theory is provided for the detection efficiency of diffuse light whose frequency is modulated by an acoustical wave. We derive expressions for the speckle pattern of the modulated light, as well as an expression for the signal-to-noise ratio for the detector. The aim is to develop a new imaging technology for detection of tumors in humans. The acoustic wave is focused into a small geometrical volume, which provides the spatial resolution for the imaging. The wavelength of the light wave can be selected to provide information regarding the kind of tumor.

Optical coherence tomography in a case of bilateral neuroretinitis.

A 42-year-old man had fever, chills, and bilateral visual loss. Visual acuity was markedly subnormal OU and ophthalmoscopy disclosed optic disc swelling with retinal thickening extending into the macula OU, findings consistent with neuroretinitis. Fluorescein angiography revealed optic disc leakage and submacular accumulation of dye OU without retinal vascular leakage. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed outer plexiform layer retinal edema and subfoveal detachments. There was evidence of active human immune deficiency virus and cytomegalovirus infections. Several weeks after multidrug therapy, sequential OCT scans documented resolution of the outer plexiform edema and submacular detachments in parallel with improved visual acuity. The OCT findings support the theory that submacular detachments in neuroretinitis result from diffusion of fluid from the optic disc to the outer plexiform layer and through the outer limiting membrane to the subretinal space.

Experimental test of the Warren-Langer model in nematic-isotropic planar interfaces.

In a directional solidification apparatus, the recoil of the nonsteady planar nematic-isotropic interface of the liquid crystal 8CB doped with hexachloroethane was measured, for different pulling velocities. Results agree very well with the predictions of our two-sided extension of Warren and Langer's one-sided model [Phys. Rev. E 47, 2702 (1993)], therefore supporting the validity of their ansatz about the evolution of the dopant concentration field. From the comparison between experiment and theory we obtain values for the segregation and diffusion coefficients of hexachloroethane in 8CB comparable to those found in the literature and measured by other methods. Using the same procedure, we measured the value of the segregation coefficient of 8CB doped with water as a function of applied sinusoidal electric field perpendicular to the sample, along the homeotropic direction. The segregation coefficient increases with electric field. In addition, preliminary results on the cellular instability in this system show that the capillary length of the pattern also increases with electric field. To our knowledge, this is the first binary system with continuously tunable segregation coefficient and capillary length.

Variational perturbation theory for Markov processes.

We develop a convergent variational perturbation theory for conditional probability densities of Markov processes. The power of the theory is illustrated by applying it to the diffusion of a particle in an anharmonic potential.

Diffusion on Archimedean lattices.

We consider random diffusive motion of classical particles over the edges of Archimedean lattices. The diffusion coefficient is obtained by using periodic orbit theory. We also study deterministic motion over a honeycomb lattice without the possibility for an immediate return to the preceding node, controlled by a tent map with the golden ratio slope. Numerical analysis is performed to confirm the theoretical results.

Reflection and transmission of waves near the localization threshold

A theory is presented for propagation of waves in bounded media near the mobility edge, based on the self-consistent theory for localization. It predicts a spatially inhomogeneous diffusion constant that leads to scale dependence in enhanced backscattering and transmission.

Decoupling of diffusion from structural relaxation and spatial heterogeneity in a supercooled simple liquid.

We report a molecular dynamics simulation of a simple monatomic glass-forming liquid. It is shown that transition to deeper minima in the energy landscape under supercooling results in the formation of icosahedrally structured domains with distinctly slow diffusion which grow with cooling in a low-dimensional manner and percolate around T(c), the critical temperature of the mode-coupling theory. Simultaneously, a sharp slowing down of the structural relaxation relative to diffusion is observed. It is concluded that this effect cannot be accounted for by the spatial variation in atomic mobility. The low-dimensional clustering is discussed as a possible mechanism of fragility.

Erythroderma, an unusual manifestation of B cell lymphoma.

A case is described in which the initial manifestation of a malignant lymphoma was an erythematous skin rash over the face, scalp and trunk. Immunological surface marker analysis showed the malignant cells to be of B lymphocyte origin with a homogeneous secretion of IgM-K. Repeated skin and lymph node biopsies and finally post mortem documented the progression of the lymphoma from that of a mixed lymphocytic-histiocytic type with a nodular pattern of growth to a diffuse histiocytic lymphoma with frequently bizarre cells. The theory of ecotaxis or homing of lymphocytes to the skin and other non-lymphoid organs of the body is discussed in an attempt to explain the occurrence of cutaneous involvement as a primary manifestation of lymphoma.

Model for the interaction of membrane-bound substrates and enzymes. Hydrolysis of ganglioside GD1a by sialidase of neuronal membranes isolated from calf brain.

Microsomes and synaptosomes isolated from calf brain contain a sialidase which cleaves ganglioside substrates. The hydrolysis of [3H]ganglioside GD1a by the membrane-bound enzyme has been studied under various conditions. The reaction rate decreased with increasing ionic strength in the incubation mixture, and was progressively enhanced by increasing concentrations of the primary alcohols n-pentanol to n-octanol. This stimulation correlates quantitatively with an increase in membrane 'fluidity' caused by these alcohols as measured by fluorescence depolarization employing 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene as probe. The dependence of the reaction rate on the amount of enzyme in the incubation mixture was linear only with water-soluble substrates but not with the lipophilic ganglioside substrate. Evidence is presented that lipophilic substrate and enzyme interact mainly within the plane of the membrane presumably by lateral diffusion. Taking this into consideration Michaelis-Menten theory was modified accordingly. As predicted, apparent Km values increased linearly with the amount of membrane-bound enzyme added and decreased with the concentration of n-hexanol in the incubation mixture. In the presence of varying n-hexanol concentrations the apparent Km-value decreased with increasing membrane 'fluidity', as measured by fluorescence depolarization of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene. On the other hand, as expected, V values were not affected by membrane 'fluidity' and increased linearly with the amount of membrane protein.

Study of the dynamic formation of transmission gratings recorded in photopolymers and holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals.

Local and nonlocal models for the diffusion of photopolymers are applied to the dynamic formation of transmission gratings recorded in photopolymers and holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (H-PDLCs). We retrieve the main parameters of H-PDLCs (refractive-index modulation and diffusion coefficient) by combining a solution of the one-dimensional diffusion equation and the rigorous coupled-wave theory applied to transmission gratings. The rigorous coupled-wave theory method provides us with information on higher harmonics of the refractive profile (not only on the first harmonic as when the classical Kogelnik theory is applied). Measurements concerning the second harmonic validate the modeling.

Extensive diffuse pulmonary ossification.

Diffuse lung injury can either heal normally or progress to fibrosis. Calcification in the setting of fibrosis is common. The appearance of mature woven bone is not. We report a patient with extensive diffuse pulmonary ossification and discuss some of the theories relating to the development of this phenomenon.
