Standards for enabling health informatics interoperability.

Most of industry countries are turning their healthcare system towards integrated care paradigms for improving quality, efficiency, and safety of patients' care. Integrated care has to be supported by extended communication and cooperation between the involved healthcare establishments' information systems. The required interoperability level goes beyond technical interoperability and simple data exchange as it has been started in the early world of electronic data exchange (EDI). For realising semantic interoperability, series of standards must be specified, implemented and enforced. The paper classifies standards for health information systems needed for enabling practical semantic interoperability.

Concept representation in health informatics for enabling intelligent architectures.

Semantically interoperable health information systems have to be based on shared knowledge and harmonised terminologies/ontologies. Therefore, knowledge representation regarding domain concepts, terms, and relationships used must be harmonised. Starting with the Generic Component Model, different approaches for representing concepts in the healthcare area are discussed, demonstrating common principles and transformation ways.

[Development of an informatic model for monitoring and clinical and epidemiological evaluation of acute intoxication in Emergency Departments in Italy].

Data collection at Emergency Departments (ED), especially with regard to toxicological aspects, is usually incomplete; they further deteriorate following the recent diffusion of data processing and retrieval systems, possibly different from region to region. The present paper deals with the setting of a computer program, specific for toxicological patients, easy to access from the general data collection system.

The use of medical informatics as a management tool for community health services during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon War.

BACKGROUND: During war the health management organizations have tremendous difficulty monitoring members' needs according to geographic spread. OBJECTIVES: To describe how an HMO used its health information technology in a way that enables its management to receive updated online information on the needs of the insured, according to their distribution throughout the country during the time of the war in Lebanon in July-August 2006. METHODS: Data were derived from the computerized medical records of Maccabi Healthcare Services--the second largest HMO in Israel, providing care to more than 1.7 million members nationwide. Data on healthcare utilization by northern members were compared to the geographic distribution of clinics. RESULTS: The war was characterized by the massive evacuation of citizens southwards. During this period there was an abrupt decline in the utilization of medical services by northern members in the northern region. This decline returned to normal 10 days after the ceasefire. A reciprocal increase was noted in the use of health services by citizens from the north in other regions. This increase returned to normal after the war. No such pattern was noticed during the same period in 2005. CONCLUSIONS: Real-time surveillance of trends in consumption of health services by citizens in times of regular daily living as well as during emergencies and wars is a vital management tool for medical directors responsible for providing health services.

[Informatics and parenteral and enteral nutrition: the state of the art].

A review was performed of the progress made with the assistance of computers in the parenteral and enteral nutrition field as one more of the many uses made today of the computer industry. Detailed analysis is presented by the authors of the different types of hardware used, as well as the main characteristics and content of the programmes and applications existing in this field, both restricted to small working groups and in management. A comparative study was also made of the management programmes distributed free of charge by some laboratories. Finally, an evaluation was made of the advantages and disadvantages of using computers in parenteral and enteral nutrition at present.

[The applications of informatics in ophthalmology].

The paper reports on the applications of information science in Romania in ophthalmology, and mainly in glaucoma, in the diagnosis of: degenerative affections of the fundus oculi, uveitis, strabismus, in functional exploration of the chromatic sense, ergo-ophthalmology, pupillary reflex and forms of the pupil, etc. The Romanian made computers Felix, Independent, Coral, Cobra, etc. were used.
