Phase-shifting (Sagnac) interferometer with external phase control.

A novel ring configuration for phase-shifting interferometry with external phase-shifting control is presented. The device is a polarization (ring) interferometer, in which the reference and test arms are parts of the same collimated beam. The key point is to manage the polarization of the light such that orthogonal linear polarizations describe counterpropagating paths in the ring interferometer. The phase shift between the two waves is externally controlled with a Pockels cell, which permits fast phase modulation without the need for moving parts inside the interferometer.

Self-referenced prism deflection measurement schemes with microradian precision.

We have demonstrated several inexpensive methods that can be used to measure the deflection angles of prisms with microradian precision. The methods are self-referenced, where various reversals are used to achieve absolute measurements without the need of a reference prism or any expensive precision components other than the prisms under test. These techniques are based on laser interferometry and have been used in our laboratory to characterize parallel-plate beam splitters, penta prisms, right-angle prisms, and corner cube reflectors using only components typically available in an optics laboratory.

Refractive-index measurement of gases with a phase-shift keyed interferometer.

The presented new type of interferometer combines the principle of two-beam interferometry and the technique of phase-shift keying of holographic gratings. On the basis of the phase-shift keying technique, the interferometer employs two different geometries for the recording and the readout process. Two holographic Bragg gratings are recorded in transmission geometry and simultaneously read out in reflection geometry using a tunable IR laser. Both gratings have the same grating period but a relative phase shift. The wavelength of the readout beam is fitted to the Bragg condition for the gratings. Using a tunable IR laser for the readout process, we can measure the spectral transfer function of both combined gratings. The shape of the measured transfer function is extremely sensitive to the phase shift between the two gratings. We demonstrate an application of this method by the measurement of refractive-index variations of gases due to pressure changes of the gases. The achieved resolution with respect to the measurement of phase shifts is approximately 1/40 pi. We present experimental investigations on two kinds of gas (an inert gas and a gas composition) as well as an efficient numerical approach to simulate the transfer function for Bragg gratings with a phase shift. Furthermore, we present a method to increase the resolution based on the controlled manipulation of the transfer function.

Robust determination of optical path difference: fringe tracking at the infrared optical telescope array interferometer.

We describe the fringe-packet tracking system used to equalize the optical path lengths at the Infrared Optical Telescope Array interferometer. The measurement of closure phases requires obtaining fringes on three baselines simultaneously. This is accomplished by use of an algorithm based on double Fourier interferometry for obtaining the wavelength-dependent phase of the fringes and a group-delay tracking algorithm for determining the position of the fringe packet. A comparison of data acquired with and without the fringe-packet tracker shows a factor of approximately 3 reduction of the error in the closure-phase measurement. The fringe-packet tracker has been able so far to track fringes with signal-to-noise ratios as low as 1.8 for stars as faint as mH = 7.0.

Performance evaluation of a thermal Doppler Michelson interferometer system.

The thermal Doppler Michelson interferometer is the primary element of a proposed limb-viewing satellite instrument called SWIFT (Stratospheric Wind Interferometer for Transport studies). SWIFT is intended to measure stratospheric wind velocities in the altitude range of 15-45 km. SWIFT also uses narrowband tandem etalon filters made of germanium to select a line out of the thermal spectrum. The instrument uses the same technique of phase-stepping interferometry employed by the Wind Imaging Interferometer onboard the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite. A thermal emission line of ozone near 9 microm is used to detect the Doppler shift due to winds. A test bed was set up for this instrument that included the Michelson interferometer and the etalon filters. For the test bed work, we investigate the behavior of individual components and their combination and report the results.

Optical vector network analyzer for single-scan measurements of loss, group delay, and polarization mode dispersion.

We present a method for measuring the complete linear response, including amplitude, phase, and polarization, of a fiber-optic component or assembly that requires only a single scan of a tunable laser source. The method employs polarization-diverse swept-wavelength interferometry to measure the matrix transfer function of a device under test. We outline the theory of operation to establish how the transfer function is obtained. We demonstrate the enhanced accuracy, precision, and dynamic range of the technique through measurements of several components.

Determination of optical parameters of a twisted-nematic liquid crystal by phase-sensitive optical heterodyne interferometric ellipsometry.

What is believed to be a novel phase-sensitive optical heterodyne interferometric ellipsometer is set up to characterize a twisted-nematic liquid crystal (TN-LC) by the elliptical parameters of the output polarization state. This ellipsometer presents the advantages of both polarized optical heterodyne interferometry and optical photometry, which introduce a polarization modulation that is capable of performing with high-sensitivity on phase detection in real time. The twist angle phi and the untwisted phase retardation gamma of TN-LC are measured precisely. The experimental results verify that a TN-LC can be treated as identical to an elliptical retarder.

Achieving stabilization in interferometric logic operations.

Interferometric systems with amplitude beam splitters can implement reversible operations that, on detection, become Boolean operators. Being passive, they consume no energy, do not limit the operating bandwidth, and have negligible latency. Unfortunately, conventional interferometric systems are notoriously sensitive to uncontrolled disturbances. Here the use of polarization in a common-path interferometric logic gate with and without polarization beam splitters is explored as an attractive alternative to overcome those difficulties. Two of three device configurations considered offer significant stability and lower drive modulator voltage as advantages over the previous systems. The first experimental tests of such a system are reported. Common-path interferometry lends itself to even more stability and robustness by compatibility with no-air-gap, solid optics.

Microelectromechanical system pressure sensor integrated onto optical fiber by anodic bonding.

Optical microelectromechanical system pressure sensors based on the principle of Fabry-Perot interferometry have been developed and fabricated using the technique of silicon-to-silicon anodic bonding. The pressure sensor is then integrated onto an optical fiber by a novel technique of anodic bonding without use of any adhesives. In this anodic bonding technique we use ultrathin silicon of thickness 10 microm to bond the optical fiber to the sensor head. The ultrathin silicon plays the role of a stress-reducing layer, which helps the bonding of an optical fiber to silicon having conventional wafer thickness. The pressure-sensing membrane is formed by 8 microm thick ultrathin silicon acting as a membrane, thus eliminating the need for bulk silicon etching. The pressure sensor integrated onto an optical fiber is tested for static response, and experimental results indicate degradation in the fringe visibility of the Fabry-Perot interferometer. This effect was mainly due to divergent light rays from the fiber degrading the fringe visibility. This effect is demonstrated in brief by an analytical model.

Compression of interference patterns with application to phase-shifting digital holography.

A compression method of phase-shifting digital holographic data is presented. Three interference patterns are recorded, and holographic information is extracted from them by phase-shifting interferometry. The scheme uses standard baseline Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) or standard JPEG-2000 image compression techniques on the recorded interference patterns to reduce the amount of data to be stored. High compression rates are achieved for good reconstructed object image quality. The utility of the proposed method is experimentally verified with real holographic data. Results for compression rates using JPEG-2000 and JPEG of approximately 27 and 20, respectively, for a normalized root-mean-square error of approximately 0.7 are demonstrated.

Deep nulling of laser light with a single-mode-fiber beam combiner.

The detection of faint companions to bright stars requires the development of very-high-contrast-ratio detection techniques such as nulling interferometry. Here we present, to our knowledge, the first experimental test of a novel beam-combination method, which is based on coupling the light at the center of a dual-aperture interference pattern into a single-mode fiber. Using such a "fiber nuller" approach, a visible He-Ne laser has been stably nulled to as low as 1.3x10(-6), thus validating the approach.

Parallel three-step phase-shifting digital holography.

We propose parallel three-step phase-shifting digital holography as a technique capable of noiseless instantaneous measurement of three-dimensional objects based on phase-shifting interferometry. The proposed digital holography carries out three-step phase shifting at the same time by using a phase-shifting array device located in the reference beam. The array device has a periodic three-step phase distribution, and its configuration is simplified compared with that required for conventional parallel phase-shifting digital holography. Therefore the optical system of the proposed parallel phase-shifting digital holography is more suitable for the realization of the proposed holography. We conduct both a numerical simulation and a preliminary experiment. The results of the simulation and experiment agree well with those of the conventional phase-shifting method and are superior to the results obtained by conventional digital holography by using the Fresnel transform alone. Thus the effectiveness of the proposed technique is verified.

Adaptive-optics system with liquid-crystal phase-shift interferometer.

We develop an adaptive-optics system based on a Mach-Zehnder radial shearing interferometer with liquid-crystal-device (LCD) phase-shift interferometry (PSI). Using accurate phase calibration and transient nematic driving of the LCD, the developed three-step PSI procedure can be achieved in a time of 5 ms. The proposed Mach-Zehnder radial shearing PSI method reconstructs the phase information using a digital signal processor (DSP). The DSP then computes appropriate control signals to drive a deformable mirror in such a way as to eliminate the wavefront distortion. The current adaptive-optics system is capable of suppressing low-frequency thermal disturbances with a signal-to-noise ratio improvement of more than 20 dB and a steady-state phase error of less than 0.02pi root mean square when the control loop is operated at a frequency of 30 Hz.

Full-aperture wavefront reconstruction from annular subaperture interferometric data by use of Zernike annular polynomials and a matrix method for testing large aspheric surfaces.

We propose a more accurate and efficient reconstruction method used in testing large aspheric surfaces with annular subaperture interferometry. By the introduction of the Zernike annular polynomials that are orthogonal over the annular region, the method proposed here eliminates the coupling problem in the earlier reconstruction algorithm based on Zernike circle polynomials. Because of the complexity of recurrence definition of Zernike annular polynomials, a general symbol representation of that in a computing program is established. The program implementation for the method is provided in detail. The performance of the reconstruction algorithm is evaluated in some pertinent cases, such as different random noise levels, different subaperture configurations, and misalignments.

Effect of the working gas of the ion-assisted source on the optical and mechanical properties of SiO2 films deposited by dual ion beam sputtering with Si and SiO2 as the starting materials.

Silicon and fused-silica targets are used as the starting materials for depositing silicon oxide (SiO2) films. The SiO2 films are prepared by a dual ion beam sputtering deposition system with a main ion source and an ion-assisted source with different working gases. The films deposited are then examined and compared by using a visible spectrophotometer, a Fourier-transform IR spectrophotometer, an atomic force microscope, and contact angle instruments. A Twyman-Green interferometer is employed to study the film stress by phase-shift interferometry. All the SiO2 films show excellent optical properties with extra-low extinction coefficients (below 2x10(-5)) and have no water absorption. When the working gas is O2 for the ion-assisted source, the deposited SiO2 films show good properties in terms of stress and roughness and with a good molecular bonding structure order for both targets. However, SiO2 films deposited from the fused-silica target had a larger contact angle, while those deposited from the silicon target had 2.5 times the deposition rate.

Application of dynamic phase shifting with wavelet analysis to electronic speckle contouring.

Dynamic phase shifting is a temporal phase unwrapping method, i.e., a method in which a sequence of speckle patterns is analyzed along the time axis. Each pixel can thus be considered as an independent detector, which is of particular interest for the study of complex surfaces. I report the application of this technique, which is based on a wavelet analysis, to contouring measurements with a dual-beam illumination electronic speckle pattern interferometry setup. I present a new, more general geometric model of the setup. I also investigate the possibility of enhancing the accuracy by using the intermediate phase values. Tests are performed on a simply described object and compared with coordinate measuring machine measurements.

Infrared broadband 50%-50% beam splitters for s-polarized light.

Prisms and slabs made of high-refractive-index materials such as ZnSe, Ge, and Si can be designed as broadband, 50%-50%, beam splitters (BSs) for obliquely incident s- polarized light in the near- and mid-IR. The beam-splitting face of the prism or slab is uncoated, while the exit face is antireflection coated. The split beams travel in orthogonal directions when light is incident at the Brewster angle. A novel design is also described that uses Brewster-angle reflection at the SiO2-Si interface to achieve a 50%-50%s-polarization BS over the 1.2-3.5 microm spectral range. Such s-polarization BSs are particularly suited for interferometry and holography.

Simultaneous measurement of temperature and chemical species concentrations with a holographic interferometer and infrared absorption.

What is believed to be a new technique that allows for the simultaneous measurement of 2D temperature and chemical species concentration profiles with high spatial resolution and fast time response was developed and tested successfully by measuring a thin layer of fuel vapor created over a volatile fuel surface. Normal propanol was placed in an open-top rectangular container, and n-propanol fuel vapor was formed over the propanol surface in a quiescent laboratory environment. An IR beam with a wavelength of 8-13 mum emitted from a heated plate and a He-Ne laser beam with a wavelength of 632 nm were combined and passed through the n-propanol vapor layer, and both beams were absorbed by the vapor layer. The absorption of the IR beam was recorded by an IR camera, and the He-Ne laser was used to form a holographic interferogram. Two-dimensional temperature and propanol vapor concentration profiles were, respectively, determined by the IR absorption and the fringe pattern associated with the holographic interferogram. This new measurement technique is a significant improvement over the dual wavelength holographic interferometry that has been used previously to measure temperature and fuel concentration, and it is ready for application under different types of fire and flame conditions.
